GLOUCESTER INNER HARBOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP PROJECT IS UNDERWAY

CRANE Gloucester Harbor Environmental Clean up -3 ©Kim Smith 2015The scheduled clean up by National Grid has begun at the site of the former Gloucester Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP). An area has been cordoned off however, Maritime Gloucester is fully operational and accessible and there is a crew working onboard the Schooner Adventure.

National Grid has created a website to provide the public with information about the environmental remediation project in and adjacent to Gloucester’s Inner Harbor.

“From 1854 until 1952, the former Gloucester Gas Light Company (GGLC) operated a facility along the Gloucester waterfront to convert coal and oil into manufactured gas. Compounds from this Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) operation are present below the ground surface along portions of Harbor Loop and Rogers Street and in the harbor. This area is referred to as the former MGP Site and includes both upland and marine areas in and along Gloucester’s Inner Harbor.Aerialslider_cropped

Portions of the United States Coast Guard Gloucester Station, Solomon Jacobs Park, a commercial property owned by National Grid, commercial properties associated with fish processing, cold storage, retail operations, and portions of city streets are located within the upland areas of the Site. The marine area of the Site includes piers, floating docks, and other structures associated with some of the waterfront properties along Harbor Loop, as well as portions of the Federal Navigation Channel. Studies have confirmed the MGP Site does not pose a risk to current occupants on any of these properties or to members of the public.

As required by state environmental cleanup regulations (i.e., the Massachusetts Contingency Plan), National Grid is proposing to conduct cleanup (“remediation”) activities in both the upland and marine portions of the former MGP Site. Various state agencies, including the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office, have or will review and approve the remediation approach.” READ MORE HERE

Pet of the Week – Stack

Stack

Stack is the name! I am a handsome young guy with a fresh new hairdo. It certainly put some pep in my step!  Oh well. I am definitely the kind of guy who likes to enjoy all of the wonderful things life has to offer, I like to find the sunny spot on the couch to take a nap, and let the wind blow my ears in the breeze.   Being an adult rescue and not knowing my history I am looking for a family with older children.  Stop by the shelter to meet me or one of my furry friends!

Rusty+Ingrid Studio Grand Opening—Nov. 1st

Rusty Ingrid-Studio-Announcement_Page_1

Rusty and Ingrid Creative Company will celebrate the grand opening of their new Printmaking Studio and Gallery with an evening of printing demonstrations, children’s activities, and refreshments.

The opening of their beautifully appointed studio-gallery represents a landmark in the growth of this Gloucester-based fine art company. Since 2012, Rusty and Ingrid Kinnunen, a married artist couple, have steadily built their business from their small central Gloucester condominium by hand printing limited-edition silkscreen prints and selling them online and at art fairs and retailers all over New England. Now, charting their own path in the Cape Ann art scene, they are expanding their business and welcoming the public into their unique, visitor-friendly storefront studio on Lexington Avenue in Magnolia.

The Grand Opening events will include:

  • Studio tours
  • Screen printing demonstrations
  • Children’s art activities from 3–5pm
  • The debut of a new Gloucester print design
  • Special one-day discounts on artwork and frames

Rusty and Ingrid Creative Company is located at 31 Lexington Avenue in Gloucester. The Grand Opening event will be Sunday, November 1st, from 3–9 PM. The gallery is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-7 PM or by chance. More info is available at: www.rustyandingrid.com

Tendercrop Farm at Canaan in Wenham

I don’t know about you, but for YEARS I have been driving to Tendercrop Farm in Newbury for a variety of things.  A long time ago it was for dried flower and the perfect basket.  Later it would be for fruits and veggies….maybe some great bread and some soup.  Once the boys came along, it’d be to see the animals, pick out pumpkins, and even, a couple of times, pick out our Christmas Tree.

While the drive is gorgeous, it is a bit of a hike.  So, imagine my thrill (exciting life I realize) when I heard that they were opening a second location in Wenham.  Just minutes from my work!

We had the opportunity to stop there on Saturday…after hockey of course.  In addition to some massive pumpkins and a couple of smaller ones, we got some swiss chard for the rabbit, some berries for the boys, and some crackers and horseradish cheddar dip for the Patriots game.  I practiced some serious restraint because I wanted about 50 more things.

Tendercrop Farm at Canaan can be found right on Route 1A in Wenham…just past Wenham Lake and the Beverly line.

Here is the link to their Newbury location   http://www.tendercropfarm.com/
