I was snorkeling at Niles Beach this week and surrounded by these creatures. I had no idea what they were…figured might be something in the jellyfish family, but I guessed wrong…..very cool

We’ve been swimming through them for the past several weeks. They come most years at this time, at least in recent history.

I read some species of Tunicates are bioluminescent, but not sure if these salps are, or if they just look that way in the blue light. With iPhone camera!

Best thing about that video was the smelt that swam through them! We have not had a good smelt run in three years and I hear that they have been solid south of here (Hull). Where in the harbor was this filmed? As for the Salps, they are wicked cool but are so thick in places that they are sticking to fishing line and hooks. Squid jigs come in loaded with the little slimy creatures!
