Gloucester Schooner Festival 2015 Parade of Sail with time lapse ~

A perfect day for the Parade of Sail, the 31st annual Gloucester Schooner Festival was the most highly attended festival to date, with 23 schooners participating and thousands of spectators perched all around the beaches and boulevards surrounding the harbor.

You’ll see parading through the inner harbor the smallest rowboats to the grand three-masted 169-foot Schooner Mystic, with the Roderick McAllister chugging through the scene. Look for Gloucester schooners the Adventure at 2:10, the Thomas E. Lannon hoisting her sails at about 3:10, and the Ardelle at 3:30. GMG FOB Al Bezanson’s Green Dragon is seen at 4:51. Out by the Dogbar breakwater the 610-foot Navy’s USS Fort McHenry was positioned and surrounded by sailboats and schooners, you really get a sense of the size of this ship.

The parade time lapse footage was shot in real time and is one hour and 23 minutes long, compressed into roughly six minutes at 1000 percent.

      Lengthy amounts of thought went into the music selection for this film. With some projects, the music makes itself known readily and other times it is more challenging, especially when combining songs. One long instrumental piece could have worked, too.

      The Parade was longer this year, more spread out, so several songs were needed. I had an idea of using completely different music than what was used, but when setting up to reshoot the sunrise time lapse, the Schooner Mystic was leaving the harbor before dawn. The ship and the harbor looked very dream-like, which led to the idea that building and maintaining the individual schooners, as well as creating the schooner festival is a dream come true for all involved.

      I mentioned to Tom that The Cranberries song “Dreams” was so beautiful and that I was looking for more uptempo music that spoke to dreams and he suggested Blondies “Dreaming,” which is such a great song and great suggestion.

      Sailing is so much about coming home, too, and why the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros “Home” fit (and is upbeat). Sailing a Schooner is hard work and I was thinking about the Bruce Springsteen song “Working on a Dream”, but decided on “Put Your Records On” because to we spectators watching, the Parade of Sail is the picture of a perfect dreamy summer day.

      Whenever in the car, I listen to 92.5 the River because they play a fabulous selection of new music and older songs. And in the spring I make a summertime play list of new and old music and The Cranberries song was from this year’s collection.

  8. I watched it twice in a row and then sent it to several friends. What a beautiful video. I absolutely love the song “Dreams” by the Cranberries and hadn’t heard it in such a long time. We watched the Parade of Sail from the navy ship USS Fort McHenry, which provided an amazing view, but seeing it from your viewpoint was a treat. Thank You!
