Here’s the start-

8/14/15 9:07AM Update: Toby trimmed and applied the rub today – image The Big reveal- Toby Unveils The Trimmed and Rubbed St Louis Style Ribs

Update 6:25AM Toby dropped off the ribs and I set up the smoker using the minion method where you place your wood around the bottom and fill the charcoal basket level. Then you take the Charcoal out if the center, start it in the chimney and then place it back in the center so the coals will slowly burn from the center outwards. Note I foiled the waterpan. On YouTube a video made this suggestion to save a tough clean up from the drippings. Made sense so there’s that… image image

6:45AM the ribs go on. The smoker is holding steady at 225. I’m looking to keep it between 200-250 for three hours and then foil them and cook for another two. We’ll see how it goes. image image

djjessie1 Yearns For The Gull Chowder

Ok, so I’ve been visiting Gloucester for nearly 15 years now for my yearly vacation.  I fell in love with the place on my first trip, and can’t help but continue to return year after year 🙂  The first years I visited we stayed at Cape Ann’s Marina Resort, and loved the convenience as Yankee Fleet was docked right there and the Gull Restaurant was right there.  Unfortunately, the Gull is no more….but even in all my years of visiting I have yet to find another restaurant with seafood chowder like at the Gull.  I can’t even make anything myself near as good…..my local fishmonger makes one similar but it’s just not the same.   So….any suggestions for restaurants I may have missed who have kick ass seafood chowder reminiscent of the Gull?  We’ll be visiting for the Schooner Festival so we’re hoping to also score some awesome chowder and I know if ANYONE knows, it would be your subscribers.  Thanks in advance!  P.S. Look for me in my Good Morning Gloucester hat September 4-12 — I’m sure I’ll hit Sugar Mags at least once 🙂

Google Putting the link to Google+ In A Submenu Tells Me They’ve Conceded To Facebook

Above you see a screenshot of my Google Home page.  Before the first link in the top right hand corner was a link to your Google+ page.  Now it’s buried in the submenu.  I like Google+, it’s a billion times cleaner than Facebook, but the first to the party Facebookisn’t going anywhere while Google has relugated Google+ to a submenu.

Just thought it’s worth noting for the geeks like me out there.

Cape Ann Symphony proudly announces the launch of the orchestra’s 64th Concert Season on Saturday, September 26 at 8 pm with theSymphonic Spectacular Concert featuring a sultry program of passionate music from Ravel’s Bolero to Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to Gershwin’s An American in Paris. The orchestra’s new season features the Cape Ann Symphony Chorus in the annualHoliday Pops Concert in November; a global tour in March 2016 with Germany’s Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, an exotic Spanish guitar concerto featuring renowned soloist Grisha Goryachev, and a world premiere from Japanese composer Koto; and a trio of world class soloists: Lucia Lin, Owen Young and Robert Levin in May. 2016. Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor Yoichi Udagawa is eager to open the CAS’s 64th concert season, “There is a vividness and clarity of experience that comes from seeing and listening to music being created in front of you that cannot be equaled. Germany, Japan and Spain are featured in Cape Ann Symphony‘s A Global Tour concert on Sunday, March 20 at 2 pm. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor represents Germany. Renowned guitar virtuoso Grisha Goryachev makes his Cape Ann Symphony debut with an exotic Spanish guitar concerto, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez to represent Spain. Finally, Cape Ann Symphony will play a world premiere work by Japanese composer Koto.

Catherine Kehoe Artist in Residency

The Cape Ann Museum, in partnership with the Rocky Neck Art Colony, is pleased to present an artist talk by Catherine Kehoe on Sunday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Museum’s Auditorium. This program is free and open to the public. A reception with the artist will follow the slide presentation.

Catherine Kehoe was invited to be the Distinguished Artist/Teacher this summer at the Goetemann Artist Residency, a program of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. This program marks the 6th year of collaboration between the Museum and the Rocky Neck Art Colony. Her work is represented by Miller-Yezerski Gallery in Boston. Kehoe studied in the Yale Norfolk program and holds a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts, Boston University. She is the recipient of an Orlowsky-Freed grant, a Pollock-Krasner grant, three Blanche Colman Awards, a Berkshire Taconic ART grant, a St. Botolph Club Foundation grant and a Golden Foundation grant. She teaches painting and drawing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and has run workshops at FAWC, Truro Center for the Arts, Art New England, Sedona Art Center, Cullowhee Mountain Arts, The Washington Art Association and the Jerusalem Studio School Summer Program in Civita Castellana, Italy.

North Shore Arts Association announces a special educational opportunity:  Jeff Weaver has offered to do a painting demonstration on Sunday, August 16 at 4 pm to benefit the NSAA’s Building Restoration Fund.  There is a ten dollar fee.  This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of Cape Ann’s most accomplished and extraordinary artists.

Working in the American Realist tradition and influenced by 20th Century approaches, Jeff relates, “My paintings and drawings of Gloucester reflect my long connection to, and fascination with, this unique place.  Its architectural diversity, decaying wharves, and working waterfront have provided me with an intriguing array of subject matter for almost 40 years.  I choose my subjects as often from the commonplace as from the inherently picturesque, looking for that which reveals the city’s true personality.”  Having graduated from the Boston Museum school, Weaver has painted in and around Gloucester for over 40 years with a studio on Rogers Street.  His work in murals and oil on canvas has won many awards and graces numerous collections around the country.

 The North Shore Arts Association’s galleries are open, free to the public, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.

You Asked for Schooner Fest Sunday Night Activities … We Listened

Back in 2010 we presented Celebrate Gloucester featuring Roomful of Blues at the City’s newly acquired I4-C2 property on Schooner Festival Sunday because we were told there’s nothing to do on Sunday after the race. Here we are five years later bringing Roomful of Blues back to Gloucester aboard The Beauport Princess Cruise Ship for an evening Blues Cruise @ 7:30 on Schooner Festival Sunday.

The Schooner Festival has always been one of our favorite Gloucester events and we’re honored to add our little piece of cruising fun to one of the world’s major maritime spectacles!

Naomi Lee (Glimcher Panarello) who has made her home here in Gloucester for the past eight years was a long time resident of Revere for thirty seven years and moved on to Marblehead for 18 years. She has been interested in art since early child hood. Always creating something from paint, mud and clay, she has even mentioned how she loved to get punished, knowing she would be sent to her room on purpose. It was there she could be secluded and create her art. She remembers painting birds on vinyl window shades. Also, one of a beautiful parrot that her mother gave to a neighbor who had mentioned how much she loved it.

At the age thirteen she went to the Museum Of Fine Arts and took a course in sculpture and that’s only training she has gotten, everything else was self taught. Because of her skills she ended up working in Parks and Recreation teaching children to senior citizens to create things from clay, later working at two different Jewish community centers one in Revere and one in Marblehead. For one season she was the Art Director at the Eastern Yacht club for the summer program. This was around the early 1990’s and continued teaching until the early 2000’s. Her last position was at Temple Emanuel teaching pottery in Marblehead 2002.

Two and a half years ago she was juried into the Guild of Beverly Artists, while looking to make money to get her car fixed, during that time she did five shows and many others on her own since.

There are many paintings to see of Gloucester’s landscape these happen to be a favorite subject of Naomi’s. Paintings can be done by photo or by eye. She believes in the warmth of the sun the calm of the moon the strength of the wind and power of sea.

Naomi calls this seascape of Good Harbor a miracle painting after a serious decision in her life and seeing the rainbow confirmed her choice. This is the product of doing so.
