GHS DECA Cycling Club!

Hi Joey: My DECA students just started a DECA cycling club and we are riding before school on Wednesday’s and meeting for coffee at different places around Gloucester. My students have created a blog and we are hoping to do a charity ride before the end of the year. Check out the blog at decabikers.blogspot.com

If you were asked to imagine the best way to experience Cape Ann in the morning how would you answer? The Gloucester High DECA program believes they have found just the thing. Starting with a well attended Wednesday morning rendezvous the DECA Bike Team has kicked off an expanding campaign of enjoyable bike riding, and promotion of better environmental consciousness. Spearheaded by Mrs. Grassetti, the business teacher and focal point of DECA at GHS, the DECA Bike Team aims to encourage larger participation and begin a weekly charity ride.

Only one week into the young program the DECA Bikers have already spent two early mornings riding to local coffee shops and enjoying the morning atmosphere. Mrs. Grassetti found herself “pleasantly surprised by the amount of students who actually showed up and how much they enjoy it.” The DECA program plans to expand the infant program by introducing DECA Bike Team T-shirts and beginning the Wednesday morning charity sponsored rides.

Senior Jared Marshall has taken to the new group activity with enthusiasm and even began a blog to document their rides and attract new riders. The group as described by Marshall, a track star nonetheless, is “just a bunch of DECA kids who love the thrill of the bike.” These bike lovers blog can be found at decabikers.blogspot.com; the group is planning future rides both for enjoyment and charity and would love more involvement from the GHS student body. Their blog is simple to navigate and announces planned rides. Mrs. Grassetti has been pleased so far with their results and is “looking forward to keeping the rides going.” So keep an eye out for the DECA Riders.

It’s time for Beethoven tomorrow (SAT) with The Cape Ann Symphony Mother’s Day Concert feat. BSO Soloists

Past_PresentLast month (in this post) I pointed to the roots of today’s music.

And a few weeks ago (in this post) you saw the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony used in Academy-Award winning film, The King’s Speech.

So to help you get ready for tomorrow night’s powerful Cape Ann Symphony concert (Get tickets here), I’ve put a few other films and videos using this iconic music at the end of this post.

In addition to Beethoven, they’ve invited Boston Symphony Orchestra father and daughter team Richard and Erin Svoboda as soloists for Michael Gandolfi’s Double Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon.  Plus you’ll hear an overture by Rossini, the most popular opera composer of his time.

Creeping

While you can’t go wrong with the scenic eye candy no matter where you walk or run in Rockport, I find myself torn just for a split second each night at the end of my little road.  If I head left, I go past Old Garden Beach, down Atlantic, all through town, through the Mill Pond Park, up to 5 corners down 1/2 of Broadway, behind the fire station, through some neighborhoods, up Summer Street, past the school, and home.  If I head right, I go onto the Old Garden foot path, follow it to its end, onto Marmion Way, past Gap Head, by Straitsmouth Cove Landing, do the Straitsmouth Way loop, back onto Marmion, up and down the streets parallel to mine, and home.  6 one, 1/2 dozen the other.

It is all pretty amazing.

Tonight, I went right. I couldn’t help but spend a little time creeping as I went.  I’m pretty envious of those homes that have Thacher’s Island and Twin Lights right there in their backyards!

FISH ON THE LOOSE

Hi Joey- 

Rumor has it that there is a giant fish on the loose in downtown Gloucester!
The kids at Beeman Elementary school created this guy from recycled materials in art class at school, and now he is swimming around somewhere downtown! We think he got too excited about this weekend’s GPS Arts Festival and took off early to check it out. Please have your readers let us know if they spot him.
And I hope everyone can join in the fun this Saturday, May 9 when downtown is taken over with art displays, performances and even an outdoor painting project at Cape Ann Sculpture park. more info at thinkthebest.org and in this video.

Help With Bird ID

I wonder if there are any birders out there who help me identify these birds. I have tried but am confused.  Maybe they are juveniles?  They are medium sized. I can’t tell from the photograph but I think their legs are dark, not yellow.  They were out on Great Neck in Ipswich in a tidal inlet.  They are pretty.  showing legs

Mayor Romeo-Theken encourages Gloucester students to send their original poem to the Office of the Mayor, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA. She promises to read them! Students should include their name, which Gloucester school, their grade and teacher’s name.

Look for Poem in Your Pocket Day each April. It’s free and simple to participate. Carry a Poem. Share a Poem. For more information, search for Poem in Your Pocket Day (PIYP Day) Academy of American Poets (www.poets.org) or New York City’s excellent web site, http://www.NYC.gov/poem. PIYP Day started in NYC in 2002 inspired by theFavorite Poem Project established in 1997 by Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States. East Gloucester Elementary initiated PIYP Day in 2012 because it always celebrates literacy and arts. Students are encouraged to submit poems to the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library’s Poetry without Paper contest.

The honorary post for the Gloucester Poet Laureate was created in 1998. There have been four poet laureates: Vincent Ferrini was the City’s first, then John Ronan, Ruthanne Collinson, and the current Poet Laureate, Peter Todd. The Committee for the Arts helps select a new Poet Laureate every four years.

Special thanks to the students; Mayor Romeo-Theken; East Gloucester Elementary school teachers and staff– especially Literacy Coach Melissa Francis; EGS PTO; poet laureate, Peter Todd, and former laureates John Ronan and Rufus Collinson. Underutilized Seafood Dinner to Benefit Maritime Gloucester

As much as we hate to think about it, a lot of the seafood that was once associated with Gloucester is now no longer actually landed here. That said, there are still many, tasty species of fish that are caught off of Gloucester’s shores.

Latitude 43 and Maritime Gloucester have teamed up again for the Second Annual Maritime Gloucester Dinner to showcase underutilized, local seafood. The four-course menu highlights the fresh seafood and each course is thoughtfully paired with “underutilized” wine varietals, to offer new ideas for seafood & wine pairings.

The dinner will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30 PM at Latitude 43. Please call (978.281.0223) for reservations as space is limited.

A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to benefit the Maritime Gloucester.
