I’m not a huge award show junkie. In truth, I rarely watch the Academy Awards (or the Oscars…even that confuses me), the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice, the Emmys, or any of the others.
While I’m not proud (nor ashamed) to say that I have not seen a single one of the movies that were nominated for an Academy Award this year, I did, however, watch part of the award show on Sunday evening.
And, while doing so, I was pleasantly surprised by two things.
First of all, when Graham Moore won Best Adapted Screenplay for “The Imitation Game” he made an inspiring and brave acceptance speech. #stayweird

Secondly, oh the tears, listening to Tim McGraw sing “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” just about did me in. What a beautiful song.

I couldn’t agree more. He was very impressive.

Absolutely agree about Mr. Moore and Mr. McGraw. But, as a Mom and Grandma, I would also commend JK Simmons “Call your parents” speech too!

Oh! You’re totally right! I forgot about that. I loved that also…and how much he thanked his wife. Such love! I loved the “which leads me to the above average children” comment that he made too when raving about his wife.

Tim McGraw filled in for Glen Campbell, a nominee for Best Original Song. He was unable to attend the Oscars because of Alzheimer’s disease. “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” is the final song of the legendary entertainer’s 60-year career. The song appears in the 2014 documentary film “Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me”, which chronicles the music icon’s final tour as he struggled with the progression of his Alzheimer’s. The emotional lyrics look back on Campbell’s life and also reflects on everything his progressing Alzheimer’s is slowly taking from him from an almost unbearably resolute perspective, reflecting, “And best of all, I’m not gonna miss you.”
So touching even if you don’t know anybody with Alzheimer’s.
I’m still here, but yet I’m gone
I don’t play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you ’til the end
You’re the last person I will love
You’re the last face I will recall
And best of all, I’m not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you
I’m never gonna hold you like I did
Or say I love you to the kids
You’re never gonna see it in my eyes
It’s not gonna hurt me when you cry
I’m never gonna know what you go through
All the things I say or do
All the hurt and all the pain
One thing selfishly remains
I’m not gonna miss you
I’m not gonna miss you

Thanks so much for providing that information for readers! The lyrics are really “real” and yet painful. It was so touching to see Glen Campbell’s family in the audience. I also read that Tim McGraw practiced over and over again….for a couple of days…because he wanted to really do the song justice. Really a special and incredibly honest song.
