Great musicians like Johnny Winter and James Montgomery inspire each other

You may know that legendary blues man James Montgomery toured the world for 5 years as featured member of Johnny Winter’s band, so Johnny’s recent passing hit James extra hard.

There’s a special bond among musicians (especially those who tour together) that’s hard to describe.  I’ve never been to war, but the guys I know who have describe a very similar bond among the people in their unit.

Rather than try to describe this bond, I figure the best way to convey it is by demonstrating through music.  Isn’t that what music does anyhow — convey a feeling or circumstance that’s impossible to describe?

Check out this video of James with The Johnny Winter Band in NYC.  Johnny & James don’t even look at each other, but they don’t have to.  Their musical bond holds it all together.

Perhaps, when he kicks off the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit Concert Series on August 22 at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion, we’ll get James to give us a taste of what it was like to tour with one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived!  Get your tickets NOW before they sell out like Johnny Winter at the Larcom in January.

August at Rockport Music

August At Rockport Music

This August, Rockport Music offers a wide variety of music with The Bad Plus and jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman to pianist Anthony De Mare in a tribute to Sondheim’s music on piano.  In mid-August, the 3rd Annual Rockport Jazz Festival brings such legendary jazz musicians as Kenny Barron and Christian McBride to genre-defying Donal Fox to young jazz artists like drummer Ali Jackson and jazz singer Cyrille Aimée. The month doesn’t end there as we also have many other performers including the Kingston Trio, Tom Rush, Paula Cole and Capitol Steps.

Swabbing the Deck, Rockport Harbor, circa 1950

Hey Joey,
I was hanging out at the Corliss landing during low tide one evening and this big, bass sound came booming across the water. Loud, rap music…gang style. These 3 men went past and the one in the center of the image and I proceeded to have a gun contest. Yes, we were flexing our muscles. Ha ha ha These are the best kind of gangs, it was a fun memory…great night.

Hi Joey,

I was visiting in West Gloucester Thursday afternoon, and found there was a different type of beauty at low tide.

I thought I’d share a few of my photos.

Fishermens Memorial-

Joey, was hoping you could post this to let all the families and public know about it.

The annual Fishermen’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 16th at 5:00 P.M . This Service is to remember and honor all of those who have lost their lives in the long history of Gloucester’s fishing industry. The Service starts with a procession from the American Legion, down Middle Street and onto Stacy Boulevard. Everyone is invited to join the procession. It is lead by a line of drummers and many of those walking carry flowers to toss into the sea at the end of the ceremony to remember loved ones or hold boat oars carrying the names of Gloucester fishing boats, past and present. Please join the Fishermen’s Memorial Service Committee in remembering those who lost their lives fishing from America’s oldest seaport. If you would like to make a donation to support the service or have any questions, please e-mail gloucesterinfo@gmail.com.

Hey, Joey. I’m hoping that someone from GMG can me some suggestions.

My friend has a trained cat show/rescue program that tours the country. She uses positive reinforcement to train all the cats and they even have an all cat band with feline guitar players, piano players, drummers and even a chicken that plays the tambourine. She uses the show not only to entertain, but to teach people the importance of interacting and training their cats to prevent problem behaviors. While she tours, she networks with rescues and shelters to help them raise money and awareness of of their needs. She also has personally found homes for over 100 abandoned/rescued cats while touring.

She will be on the east coast next summer and is a huge Gloucester fan. I suggested the Gorton Theatre, but she needs something that doesn’t have an audience on three sides.  Is there a venue or a club that holds about 100 people that does rentals?  It’s a really unique fun show, although sometimes the cats choose to leave the stage to meet and mingle with audience members rather than perform.  The cats are all happy and love being on stage and tour in a special RV with huge play rooms that they live in. The website is http://www.circuscats.com if anyone wants to check it out. Some of the cats even have twitter accounts.

Any help finding her a venue that she could rent next summer would be greatly appreciated. I also suggested the Cape Ann animal shelter for her to work with.

Thanks, Joey!

Ramona

Hello,
I enjoy your site every day.  I have a question,  I host a cycling event every year out of Danvers, Ma that supports cancer research at BIDMC in Boston, MA.  It is a grass roots effort that gives 100% funds raised directly to BIDMCs cancer research programs.  We have people from all over the North Shore participating in the ride.  Our web site is  www.areasontoride.com .  Could this event make it into you publication?
Thank you,
