Gull identification link from good pal Steve Borichevsky

Iceland Gull 11 January 2014 - 003[3][1]

Hi Joey,

Because I lived on The Fort for six years, I’ve seen a few gulls in my day. Depending on the species, gulls have up to four plumage types as they mature, plus they change from breeding plumage to winter plumage as adults.

This causes many people to throw up their hands is discuss when trying to identify the birds they are seeing. I even get comments from seasoned birders and twitchers that they get confused. With this in mind, I have posted many gull tips over the past few years in hopes that it will help those of us on Cape Ann and also the many, many birders that come here in the winter to find them. Gloucester has some pretty cool birds here in the winter that many inlanders just don’t get to see.

I hope that this information is helpful!

Decadent Desserts!

I am planning to sign up for Chef Matt’s “Decadent Desserts” cooking class. I’ve never taken a cooking class before, but based on how much I learned and truly enjoyed Savour’s “Become a Wine Expert” series, I know it will be tons of fun. Besides, I tried making Apple Tarte Tartin from the original 1800s recipe (not successful) and would love to have Chef Matt’s recipe!!

P.S. It’s not that I am obsessed with Apple Tarte Tartin, the thing is, that at the end of the summer when our peaches and pears ripen, I would love to make Peach and Pear Tarte Tartins!

Greetings!

Our Winter Classes and Chef’s Table dinners have been scheduled and are beginning to fill up. Call to reserve your space today!

About the Chef’s Table

Upcoming dates:

February 8th (Italian Wine Dinner)

February 16th (Four Course Dinner)

Menus to be published soon.

The Chef’s Table is a great way to extend our hospitality to clients or private tastings and classes. Our antique, hand-crafted table seats up to twelve people comfortably and is uniquely located inside Savour Wine and Cheese, adjacent to the beach gourmet exhibition kitchen. Guests at the table experience an exclusive private dining experience with a menu that is designed specifically to compliment the wine pairing by our wine expert, Kathleen Erickson.

These events are typically booked for private parties and are not open to the public, however we periodically open the table to reservations on a first-come, first-served basis. Sample Chef’s Table menus can be viewed on our beach gourmet web page. Do not delay in making your reservations. Open Chef’s Table events tend to sell-out very quickly.

Ask Johnny Winter a question and WIN one of his CDs

I’m taping an interview with rock-blues legend Johnny Winter tomorrow and I’ll post the podcast of it on GMG.  Johnny Winter is an icon.  One of the best guitar players alive, excellent voice, and perhaps one of the best blues producers ever.

Next month Johnny Winter turns 70 and has a brand new 4-CD set coming out.  In two weeks (1/31) he’s performing at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly (there are still a few tickets left.  Get them here.)

His label sent me a couple of his critically acclaimed 2011 CD, “Roots”, which is spectacular and proves his status as one of the greatest blues men of all time (as if anyone would argue).

Put a question in the comments to this post and I’ll ask it tomorrow.  Better yet, I’ll give away a CD to the best question submitted.

I need these questions by NOON tomorrow SUN 1/19.

Let’s have some fun!

Folly Cove, One of Our Many Treasures

I took a short drive with my camera around sunset. Folly Cove Always looks great, but for some reason is difficult to photograph. But I pulled over anyway and took this picture. In the summer, the sun sets over Ipswich Bay at the Lobster Pool http://www.lobsterpoolrestaurant.com/main/index.php It's the only place other than Key West that the customers stop eating, stand up, and applaud the sunset.

As I was making a few photographs of the sunset over Folly Cove, I heard a babbling brook. It must have been the snow melt from across the road and the quietness of the season. I saw and photographed another angle of this that included a length of silver ribbon entangled in the bush. It made me think of all the wonderful times I've had there with my late parents, my sister (Painter Barb), and now Janet. I think of all the "eat in the rough" memorable occasions that others have had at the Lobster Pool. It's very special.

Found At Shaws- Spotted Dick

When was the last time you had yourself some tasty Spotted Dick?  As far as Spotted Dick brands go, you gotta go with Heinz over Hunt’s, right?  What kind of savage buys Hunt’s over Heinz anyway?  If you see someone at the supermarket at the Spotted Dick section pick up the Hunt’s over the Heinz just back away slowly.  Clearly they’re sociopaths that could snap any moment and riddle the place with AK47 fire.
