Good Morning Gloucester 
I can see letting the blowhard run out of what they think is an intellegent conversation with a stare, but the smile thing is not a sign of respect and will certainly have its consequences. Have you ever seen what happens to a baseball batsman when he smiles to a pitcher in a critical situation? The correct term is “Plunk”! Perhaps I do not get the point. Maybe this is a “Put a Flower in the rifle barrel of a National Guardsman” type thing. Knowing he cannot react.
