Gloucester’s ‘sister city’ is Tamano, Japan. July 16 is a Holiday in Japan- Marine Day (Umi no hi) Japan’s newest holiday; only became a nationally recognized holiday in Japan in 1996. Marine Memorial Day was established in 1941 to mark the anniversary of the 1876 return of the Meiji Emperor to the Port of Yokohama, on the two-masted topsail schooner Meiji-Maru, from a tour of the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions This holiday was established to express gratitude for the gifts of the sea, honor its importance, and pray for the prosperity of Japan as a maritime nation.
In celebration of Marine Day, in Japan all the national aquariums organize special events, water sports competitions, water shows, and cultural activities relating to the sea take place. Many people celebrate with a day at the beach.
Gloucester is a Maritime City- with its fishing industry, the Maritime Museum and Dory Shop, elegant double-masted schooners (the Adventure, Ardele, and Lannon,) rowing competitions (Blackburn Challenge, dory and seine boat races.) festivals (St. Peter’s, Waterfront, Schooner) delicious fresh seafood served at Gloucester’s many fine restaurants, beautiful beaches and much, much more, we are truly blessed! Here we have many ways to enjoy our ‘Gifts from the Sea.’ Think Globally, Act Locally- Today may we express gratitude for these gifts, honor their importance, and pray for the prosperity of all!
