Tolkien, 1916
Tolkien was born to English parents in the Orange Free State (now part of
the Union of South Africa). His father died when John was three and his
mother when he was eleven. Subsequently raised by a guardian, he attended
Exeter College at Oxford, served as a signals officer in World War One, and
worked as an etymologist on the Oxford English Dictionary, later spending 34
years as a professor at Oxford University, first of Anglo-Saxon and later of
English. Although he first gained academic recognition as a translator and
interpreter of the epic Beowulf, his book The Hobbit, originally written in
the 1930’s for the enjoyment of his children, became one of the most popular
books of the 20th century. The sequel trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, made
Tolkien first a cult figure and finally a reluctant celebrity. In 1971 he
was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth.

Good Harbor Beach Going to the Dogs

September 15 has come and gone so it is OK to take your dogs for a run on Good Harbor Beach. Good to see that everyone was picking up after their dogs. Rubber Duck hates to step in it.  After the Mug Up on Sunday we took a stroll down the beach. I had to try out my Five Finger Vibrams. Worked great. They didn’t fill with sand and I felt like I was walking barefoot.

One of the main reasons for getting the Vibrams was for fishing off the rocks. Epic fail. The type of Vibram that coats the bottom of these things makes walking on slick Rockport rocks like a cross between walking on ice skates, axle grease, and ball bearings. Not good. Back to the standard Timberline work boot.

But the ultimate reason for buying them, driving Joey up a wall, they work perfectly.

New Auction House Opens in Gloucester!

A week from this Wednesday, on October 5, Walt Kolenda will be holding his first Gloucester  auction in the Cape Ann Industrial Park. I’ve been helping Walt open box after box of the contents of the estate of Wentworth Professor of Aviation, Lockhart Smith, of Saugus, MA. There are old (back to the early 1900’s) aviation magazines, original flight training manuals and handbooks, antique aviation collectibles, ephemera
( collectible written and printed matter), memorabilia, postcards, awards, etc.We unearthed a bunch of very cool old hobby model kits of airplanes, cars, ships, spaceships, robots, and more. There is plenty of antique/vintage glassware, lighting, pottery, porcelain, jewelry and who knows what else!

If you’re looking for furniture, the auction will include mission oak chairs, a solid cherry drop front desk with glass bookcase, a hand painted Asian cabinet, a Hoosier cabinet with Tambour doors, pine corner shelf, and other  really nice pieces.Walt moved to Gloucester in August of  2010, and although new to the area, has been in the auction/antiques business for about 30 years. He’s very excited to be holding his first Gloucester auction and plans on making it at least a monthly event, with special event auctions added as needed.

The monthly auctions will take place on the 1st Wednesday evening of each month at 6pm, inspection starts at 3pm the day of the sale.

There will be no buyer’s premium for this auction. Terms of payment accepted are cash, known checks and credit cards.

The Bean Family Has Some Nice Things To say

gmglogohires

Rich Bean writes-

Thank You GoodMorningGloucester

Dear Joey,

My family and I would like to thank you and the other contributors of GMG for helping us find our new home here in Gloucester.  3-4 years ago my wife and I started the path of picking the neighborhood to move to and raise a family. 2-3 years ago we realized we wanted to move to Gloucester.  (Seeing as though it used to take me  a yr. to shop for a CD player, picking a new neighborhood seemed daunting)  So we starting taking day trips from Medford as often as we could.  We wanted to explore and learn as much as we could about this city.   Thankfully we found GMG.  This site offered so much information and community input that we would NEVER have gotten from any other resource.  It’s been amazing.  Early on we recognized how much people loved living here and sharing it.  There was always some cool event or some place new to see.   Without this site we wouldn’t have found hidden gems like Lobster cove,  Lane’s Cove, Cressy Beach, and all the great restaurants.  With each visit we got to enjoy all the new things we discovered through GMG, like Stage Fort Part, Rocky Neck, Heritage Museum, or Main St.  I’ll never forget the day I finally got to witness the Greasy Pole Contest on a beautiful day in 2010.   We moved here in July and have been enjoying everything about it.

Thank you all so much for opening the doors.

Art Now Event in Rockport in Photos

We had a great evening at Art Now Rockport at the historic former Rockport Lodge (now the beautiful home of Abigail Cahill O’Brien & Greg O’Brien) enjoying miniature apple pies & spiked cider while discussing art with local contemporary artists Kurt Ankeny, Renata Fryshara, Nina Samoiloff, Karen Tusinski & Ben Macadam). We even had the chance to sit around the fire for a bit on a cold evening in early Fall before heading inside to hear art advisor Lydia Barry Kutko make a presentation on the local contemporary art scene. For a more detailed account of Art Now Rockport, click here. Meanwhile, enjoy some photos! (And if you didn’t join us this year, and would like to know when the next Art Now event is going to take place, be sure to click this link and sign up for our newsletter. Thanks!)

Dwight Hebert Represents! In Roma

Dwight writes-

GMG was once again a witness to the sites and sounds of Europe, this time we are in Roma.  A wonderful city, with warm people who send their love and affection to the folks on Cape Ann.  Next on the agenda (tonight)…the closing ceremonies for the Barcelona (Spain, if in question) fire festival, aka: La Merce Festival. It features a fireworks and laser show.  Monday, we head to Ibiza and then to Formentera.

As always, Dwight Hebert
