Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary With Bill O’Connor and ‘B’

Hey Joe,

Yesterday afternoon, ‘B’ and I decided to walk the loop at the Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary in the rain.  It was a great way to kill a half an hour and we observed some things we usually don’t see because they are hidden by foliage in other seasons.  One thing in particular that really stuck out was a tree that had fallen years ago that was carpeted with bright green moss.  The contrast with the browns left behind by winter was a perfect testament to the arrival of Spring.

Did You Know? (Black Brants)

That the Black Brant, or Pacific Brent Goose is a small sea goose, about the size of a Mallard duck, that stages one of the most spectacular migrations of all waterfowl. Over 140,000 Pacific black brant migrate along the pacific flyway each year. In the fall virtually all Pacific Coast birds gather at Izembek Lagoon on the Alaska Peninsula to prepare for their journey south. Ninety-five per cent of the brant diet is composed of eelgrass, which this flock was reaching underwater for, grabbing and flipping around in the air and then eating.  I don’t recall seeing them before, but they are very attractive and shy.  As soon as they noticed me photographing them, they booked it.

This band has been touring all over the map. Just recently being signed on with Hillgrass Blue billy Records They made an appearnce in Somerville  at The Rosebud Diner last weekend along with four other bands,   Tokyo Tramps, Ray Cashman, Pork Chop Willie, and Kent Burnside. It was one of the most liveliest shows I have ever been to. Hopefuly you can make it over the bridge to check them out. If you love to dance they make it very easy with their upbeat Mississippi Delta Rockabilly style music. When ever, where ever, if I can make it I am so there. Blues like I like it.

Cape Ann Brewing’s Haddock Sandwich

I’m just gonna put it out there that you don’t need to like craft beer to have an excuse to go to Cape Ann Brewing.  The food is fantastic.  This haddock sandwich might just have been the best I’ve ever eaten.  They give you a huge portion of haddock, beer battered and cooked perfectly.

As an aside, you could also go just to listen to the beer nerds at the bar wet themselves  talking about “mouth feel” and percentages of alcohol of each beer.  It’s comical to listen to them try to out-do each other with obscure beer statistics and craft beer knowledge.  Oy!

This is a small sampling of the art. We have approximately 3200 students in our district. Look for more digital art displays around town starting the week of April 18th. Venues include the Sawyer Free Library, Cape Ann Museum, Cape Ann Community Cinema, and a few surprise places as well.
