"Field of Dreams" Community Story of Mattos Field

Patti Amaral writes-

Hello Joey, Here is a wonderful story about Mattos field and local artists I know you will love. Great community effort, thanks for all you do.   Patti Amaral Clean City Initiative

Mattos

Field of Dreams

The rock at the top of the hill states: This playground is dedicated to the memory of Joseph S. Mattos Jr. Born Oct. 4, 1899 and killed in action Oct. 5, 1918. Dedicated 1935.

During World War I, Joseph S. Mattos Jr. “died with honor in the service of his country”, just one day after his eighteenth birthday.  World War I officially ended just over a month later (11/11/1918)
Joseph S. Mattos Jr. was probably one of the youngest Gloucester men killed in action during WWI.
The area known as the Joseph Mattos Field or Playground was originally a low-lying natural basin with a brook running through it.  In the 1840s Nathaniel Webster Sr. dammed the brook creating a pond.  In the winter he cut the ice from the pond to supply the fishing fleet.  Around 1900 his son, Nathaniel Webster Jr., sold the business to Cape Pond Ice Co.  In 1924 Cape Pond Ice Co. sold the property to the city for a public recreation area. Ten years later the city built Veterans Memorial School, adjacent to the field.
For the past 30 years Mattos field has hosted The Cape Ann Women’s Softball League. This year the league started a campaign to raise money for new lights for the field that can cost up to $100,000. The CAWSL “Light up Mattos” field campaign has sponsored several local fundraisers to raise money for the lights.
Two years ago the women painted the bleachers with donations from the Building Center. After searching for a local artist to paint “Mattos Field” on the back of the freshly painted bleachers, in an attempt to brighten up the area, local artist Jason Burroughs stepped up and donated his time to paint the new “Mattos Field” mural. Jason and his friend Enza Dimaio spent last weekend painting the mural. Jason has been part of Cape Ann Art Havens Teen Artist Guild for over a year and a half now, which is led by Executive Director Mat Schetne. Jason has shown his work for the last two summers at the Farmers Market, and his most recent showing on October 1, 2011 called “Wet Paint”. He states,” in some ways my form of art is abstract but at the same time its got an urban feel to it, I pretty much have no boundaries to define my artwork”. Jason attended Veterans Memorial School and played at the field throughout his youth. “Painting the Mattos Field Mural meant a lot to me because when I went to Veterans Memorial School, I always remember the ugly bleachers in the corner of the field that we were not allowed to go near (because of their unkempt condition). I think painting the mural brightened up the bleachers and made it look a lot more inviting. I’m glad to say that I did something for my city.”

Enza Dimaio worked with Jason on the mural too. She is a local girl who played softball for the Raiders at Mattos field for many years. She doesn’t consider herself an artist, but when I saw her down the field helping Jason, I could tell she truly enjoys the work. Enza is happy to be giving back to the local field that she played on in her youth as well.

Two young local residents giving back to their community through what they love to do, Paint.

Here are the details from the Gloucester Daily Times-

Following last year’s hugely successful introduction of a $1,100 holiday shopping spree sweepstakes, the Gloucester Downtown Association, spearheaded by two Main Street merchants — Palazola Sports’ Linda Palazola and Kids’ Unlimiteds’ Christine Orlando — has joined forces with more than 40 of Gloucester’s downtown retailers, to offer shoppers a chance to be this year’s winner-take-all.

The seasonal promotion, which offers holiday shoppers a free raffle ticket for every item purchased from participating merchants, starting tomorrow and running through Saturday, Dec. 10, culminates in a grand prize drawing immediately following the 5 p.m. lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree at Court House Square, outside the police station.

The nuns of a Spanish Dominican convent are faced with  the dilemma of raising a baby girl left on their doorstep.  They name her Teresa, after the order’s patron saint. But  Teresa grows up too free-spirited to remain in the cloister.  Comedy and pathos join as one in this lovely play.

Don’t miss it!

Final Week Announcement for Jemil Beauchamp

image

Our final week at Jemil Beauchamp (1091 Washington Street, Gloucester) is upon us. We’re trying to clear out the store, and so that means that the deals just got even better.

While the paintings and handmade bags will remain at 40% off, everything else is being sold at cost. What we paid for it is the price for you. If we paid $5 for that Dolce and Gabbana rugby jacket, that’s the price.

And we don’t just have women’s clothes and antiques, either, since this is also our moving rummage sale. So I’ve got a very nice Altec Lansing speaker set that hooks up to your computer for $75. We’ve got a box of tools, $4 a piece, we’ve got chairs and books, purses for $5 a piece. We’ve also got some bigger furniture items like an old armoire for $40 and a folding table for $15. Lots of great stuff in wonderful condition. If we can’t get rid of it, it’ll cost us money to throw it away, so make us an offer if you need to.

Thank you,

Kurt and Jenny

Toy Drive & Meat / Seafood Raffle

This weekend is "Christmas by the Sea" Weekend in Manchester by the Sea, MA – the kickoff to the holidays in town.  The weekend’s events start on Friday night with a local "shop around" event which offers incentives to people for browsing and shopping at retailers in town.  On Saturday, Santa arrives by boat into Manchester harbor and then there is a Christmas parade in which the children march with santa to the community center for a Santa meet-and-greet. Finally on Sunday, we will light the "Friendship Tree" in the center of town.

This Saturday night, December 3rd, I (along with my band) will be hosting a fundraising event at The Landing at 7 Central – a Manchester restaurant & pub.  Our band will be donating our time and performing from 9 to midnight in order to collect new, unwrapped toys for Pathways For Children (http://www.pw4c.org) in Gloucester. Each guest who brings a toy will receive a raffle ticket and will be entered to win one of several Meat Prizes throughout the evening.  Also, if guests do not bring a toy, they can purchase raffle tickets and the money raised will be used to purchase toys. Currently, several Manchester and Gloucester restaurants and businesses have donated grass fed ground beef, roasts, etc..  We are still looking for donations of meat that will be raffled off throughout the night.

I am writing in hopes that you will make a donation.   I think having some seafood donated by Captain Joe & Sons would be a fun play on the Meat Raffle concept and would tie back nicely to funds being donated to Gloucester’s Pathways for Children.  All who donate – whether a restaurant, butcher or local business – will be recognized and would be more than willing to hand out coupons, collateral or any other info you would like throughout the night.  Should you choose to donate, I can pick up your donation on Friday or Saturday.

Gloucester Dog Park Receives Generous Donation

A follow up to the fundraising performance of Sylvia from May Lou Maraganis:

Dusky Foundation Pledges $100,000 with Matching Funds to the creation of Cape Ann’s First Dog Park

Before a group of supporters at a benefit performance of ‘Sylvia’, a play about a rescue dog, a dog park and the relationships that ensue it was only fitting venue for the Friends of Gloucester Dog Park to announce the generous contribution by the Dusky Foundation of $100,000 to create such a park here inGloucester. Mary Lou Maraganis and Judi Masciarelli, co-founders of the dog park, have devoted the last year and a half to making this a reality.  With a core group of volunteers to assist them and the donation by the Dusky Foundation, groundbreaking is under way for phase one.

Although the city council unanimously approved the appropriation of land for the dog park at Stage Fort Park, the park will be built entirely by private donations.

Eighty percent of the $100,000 Dusky donation will be in matching funds making your donation go that much further and the dog park built that much sooner.

This is a recreational park built by and for the community to bring together the dog-loving community.

All gifts designated for the dog park are tax-deductible, and donations can be made through the Gloucester Fund. Checks should be made out to

Gloucester Blue From Mark Destino

Mark writes-

Hi Joey,
Walking through the east village yesterday late afternoon. Stumbled upon the Cherry Lane theater – Saw the poster. Caught the play – only its sixth run through. I think it was about pilgrims verses the natives  – but isn’t everything.
Had a funny little post performance chat and a sweet fish town remembrance with Izzy and Gillian.
The world is curious but particularly Gloucester – shes a most curious place.
We, from far and away, send our love home.
