Official Statement From Mayor Kirk Regarding Rebuilding The Greasy Pole
I reached out to Mayor Kirk this morning for a statement about the greasy pole.
Here is her response.
The Greasy Pole will be rebuilt. I have already met with members of the Fiesta Committee this morning and assured them the city will be their partner. It will take a community effort though. We need the Fiesta Committee, the Waterways Board and the city to all step up to the financial challenge. The Greasy Pole represents a tradition and culture that we cherish in Gloucester, and we won’t let it vanish.
Regards, Carolyn Kirk Mayor

You guys are the best. I wouldn’t trade any one of you for anyone else. Great work on bringing this critical story to our readership and the world.

That’s pretty earthshattering. Good thing it didn’t go when all those people were on it during Fiesta. Did it just tumble over?

Wow, whtat a sad sight! Hope the new one is worthy and stout. I feel fortunate and honored that I was there, and able to film the final champion on that ol’ puppy. It may call for a memorial re-edit!
I think they should salvage what they can, and cut slices of that sucker, label it, and give it to all the past champions! Ya know, chop it like some round cutting boards. Maybe put a chunk on display, or a shrine. Do we have a greasy pole museum yet? Viva la Pole!!!!!!

Someone on Facebook said they were out on the Lannon last night and noticed it was listing to the side. Then last night’s high tide finished the job. We must rebuild!

heheheh…my buddy david ‘doc’ vincent suggests that the residue be sliced up and after appropriate gifting to past winners, sell every slice to raise money for the new improved greasy pole! now, i think this is a terrific idea.

This is a very sad day for the City of Gloucester. So glad they will rebuild. Many happy memories watching the greasy pole competition through the years as a young girl, married watching it with my husband and children and now watching with my married children and grandchildren.
