Can you tell me what happened to the large black buoy that used to be right across from the Annisquam Yacht Club and Coffin Beach?
Way back in the 40’s we used to swim out and climb up the buoy.
Told my grandchildren about it and they went to Wingaershiek Beach yesterday and said it wasn’t there! (they probably thought "the old lady" is a little hoopy!)
Thanks for any info!

Don’t worry Georgia,
A lot has changed with navigation markers in the 70-odd years since you saw that buoy. Black buoys and channel markers have been replaced by green ones. The channel has most likely been altered several times due to shifting sands in the Annisquam river as well, and where there was a black buoy then may be a red one now, or a no-wake buoy, or a bunch of moorings.

Interesting, Georgia… I live across from and look out at Wingaersheek beach…Coffin is a large curved beach to the Northwest of Wingaersheek, before the opening of the Ipswich river a long way from the Annisquam Yacht Club.
In the 50’s I raced in a fishboat from the start at the yacht club, out and then back in the Annisquam river, confronting the tides, winds or lack thereof, the rocks and eddies. Quite a challenge! .
I believe I remember the buoy you are referring to, but it wasn’t near Coffin beach. I agree with Pete’s comments about the changes over the years. Cheers

I remember it well and there was another similar buoy in the river near where Little river joins it.

I remember that bouy. It was almost directly opposite the mouth of Lobster Cove, right where the river took a bend to the right. I am surprised it isn’t still there – the channel rises up to beach level pretty quickly there, and it’s very easy to get aground if the tide is less than midway between low and high.

if it was off lobster cove and wingaersheek it is a green buoy now. black buoys have not been used as channel markers for several decades.
