Winter Poem

WINTER POEM

It’s winter in Gloucester

And the gentle breezes blow

Seventy miles an hour;

feels like fifty five below.

Oh, how I love Gloucester

When the snow’s up to my butt

I take a breath of winter

And my nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful

So I guess I’ll hang around

I could never leave Gloucester

Cuz I’m frozen to the ground!!!

A friend just sent me this poem, which I just had to share.

Self Publishing Part 4 – Quality: Fact Checking, Liability, Good Editing & Good Writing From Kat Valentine

Part 4 – Quality: Fact Checking, Liability, Good Editing & Good Writing

Although all writers should strive for excellence in all their writing this is of particular consideration for those who self-publish. Over the past few days I’ve been reading discussions on Amazon Discussion Boards and other Message Boards and one of the subjects that gets discussed a lot is quality. Because the term “self-published” has long carried a stigma of not-good-enough, indie publishers are struggling to convince potential readers that their books are just as good, an in some cases better, than those published by traditional publishers. It is very important that self-publishing authors police themselves to maintain high standards. Continued at: http://parlezmoiblog.blogspot.com

Peter Krasinski Spite Marriage Event at St John’s Church Feb 5th

SpiteMarriage

Dear Joey,  I love GMG.  Can you put up this announcement.  It’s lots of fun, and is always a full house.  Attached is a jpg of the original poster.
St. John’s Church welcomes back for winter fun Peter Krasinski, Boston organist who will accompany Buster Keaton’s silent film Spite Marriage on Saturday, February 5 at 7 pm.  Laugh at the slapstick comedy of Buster Keaton’s silent film “Spite Marriage” (76 min.), about an unassuming dry cleaner in love with a famous actress who in turn loves somebody else. Organist Peter Krasinski improvises the music, just as it would have been performed at the movie’s release in 1929. An organ consultant, conductor, and music educator as well as a performer, Krasinski currently serves as accompanist at Beth El Temple Center in Belmont and organist of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Providence. $15/10 students and elders, at the door. Vintage Cartoons start at 6 pm.

Jo-Ann Castano Writes About The American Style Get Out The Vote

Submitted on 2011/02/02 at 8:36 pm
Here is another page online to direct people to. It’s American Style online magazine where POP Gallery in Gloucester is featured. Would be good to get people to post comments on the article. More exposure for everyone, especially for the POP Gallery artists.

http://www.americanstyle.com/2010/11/style-spotlight-news-from-the-gallery-front/

The page also has a link to vote Gloucester for a Top 25 Arts Destination in the US. Thanks to Kristine for all the leg work and letters/emails and calls she has sent out to promote this and the board and staff for their support. Keep going !

If we can interest editors and writers in major art publication to do reviews on individuals or groups of artists and exhibitions here, that is of greater value and target market for the artists. Many times an inn or hotel may sponsor the writer’s/critic’s overnight stay in return generates a mention in the article or just for the good “word of mouth” extended value. Eateries are also ones who like to sponsor a dining experience for our guests to Gloucester and Cape Ann and lends itself well to experiencing the true working character of our community that we cherish here.

Geo Tourism seems an option people are interested in as well. Discussions on how to create sustainable opportunities for artist to continue their work by ideas such as supporting cultural facilities funding for live/work space and their venues, by defining the very diverse target industries and their market will help to tell the story of their work. It’s the opportunities for, the stories of, the working artists and their art that creates a cultural destination and need for open dialog.

Sounds like seARTS is off to a good and exciting year. The annual meeting and guest speakers addressing opportunities for cultural economic development regarding the community development projects of the City should be well worth all those interested in attending. Public discussion and the artist’s and cultural community’s input to future vision with mutual goals and needs being addressed is the foundation seARTS was built on. I was thrilled to see Susan Silberberg-Robinson name announced as the keynote speaker. Now we’re talking business! Good luck seARTS 2011!

How about a “1% for the Arts” in Gloucester?

Beets! The Women of Chive Prepare Some Tasty Beets

Beets are available this time of year and this is a perfect way to use them to enhance your menu options. In this recipe and video the women of Chive (Chive Sustainable Event Design and Catering) prepare this easy, delicious and healthy silky, velvet beet puree that has a multitude of uses. The boiled beets are blended with some yogurt, olive oil, fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper. Finish by adding chopped chives.

The puree is also excellent with meat such as turkey and pork.

GMG Tech Talk -Poll

In light of the new iPad newspaper “The Daily” which just launched and is charging for it’s content I wonder how many of you would ever consider paying for your local newspaper’s online content if they decided to do away with free content and went to a subscription based website.

Local newspapers cover news such as tax issues, zoning, and political races and if they didn’t exist where you would get that information?

I can tell you that even though many people tell me they check out GMG before they check out the GDT, we don’t come close to covering the important stories that keep politicians honest and I have no intention to ever try to.

God bless the remaining newspaper people that still labor to bring us the important stories even though they have to endure pay cuts and layoffs. Newspapers are vital to our way of life. I hope they can figure out a way to keep on keepin on.

Ground Hog Day!

Thanks to SOB

Sorry Frank, I mean FOB (Friend of Blog) and one of the GMG sticka makers Frank Ciolino texted me “Happy Groundhog Day” Today.

Wasn’t paying attention to the news today but I guess Puxatany Phil didn’t see his shadow today. That means it will be a early spring! That Fat  Pig better be right!  I can’t take this Winter no more! “No Mas”

Tuffy Sucks (Not Really)

Tuffy Explains Why A 50 Gallon Drum Is More Reliable Than His Ex Wife

Did You Know (Geese)

Series of photos of a flock of geese on the beach, taking flight, and flying away
Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That Canada geese usually start choosing mates and selecting a territory for nesting in late February to early March? The females start laying eggs anytime from mid-March to mid-May. Incubation by the female begins as soon as all her eggs are laid. The gander’s job during nesting season is to defend the female, their nesting territory, and eggs. If a person or another goose enters the territory, the gander will usually give a warning call to the intruder before chasing it away. Some geese can be highly aggressive and will only stop their attack when the intruder has left or the goose’s life is threatened.
Fortunately, these geese that I stumbled upon at Cambridge Beach were not mating or aggressive and decided to fly away. Keep this in mind as we reach the end of February going into March, and steer clear of geese that may be mating. I have been attacked by terns who were nesting on the abandoned piers next to the artist building in East Boston while trying to unlock the front door, and by gulls on an island when I unwittingly explored too close to their rookery. It can be painful and scary to have a bird intent on driving you away, and they will draw blood if you don’t move quick enough for their liking – a challenge if you’ve gotten yourself way out on the rocks before you realize you’re in the wrong place. That’s why Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds was such a great horror film – it was not far fetched.
