Eric Hoffer Quote of the Week From Greg Bover

In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.

Eric Hoffer (1902 – 1983)

Known as the “Longshoreman Philosopher,” Hoffer’s first book, The True Believer, (1951) was a new perspective on the power and danger of fanaticism and mass movements, both political and religious. His background as a migrant farmhand, hobo, and ultimately a dock worker gave him an authority to speak of the working class as few academics could. His ideas on the power of meaningful labor to enhance self-esteem and therefore positive societal change are still controversial today. Hoffer won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983.

Ginormous Snow Man Challenge From Rockport

Hey Joey.

We just heard about a great snow man on School street in Rockport….also heard the snowman’s neighbor created an alligator in snow….perhaps this is happening everywhere and we’re just clueless.

Just did a drive by and the snowman is about 12-14 feet tall -it’s wonderful….amazing….

So…what about a contest in Rockport/Gloucester for the best snowman or snow sculpture? It’s the perfect winter for this – we all need a diversion! Or a snow festival? Perhaps we should take baby steps…with a snowman contest. Maybe a restaurant or two want to get involved and throw in a humble incentive?

Who knows? All I know is anyone who builds a 12  or 14 foot snowman should get some sort of recognition…OK – thinking of a name for this…the 2011 SNOW-DOWN….????

Enjoy your blog…

Eastern Point PSA and Happenings From Dani Lubbers

Hi Joey!

Keeping you updated with the happenings down at Eastern Point Lighthouse. With all of this ridiculous snow, we decided that we should do something constructive with it. So naturally we built this huge ass igloo. We aren’t skilled enough to put a roof on it, but we did our best. We’d like to invite you to an igloo party sometime….I’m sure this beast will be standing until June. -Dani Lubbers

Ps.

I’d like to give anyone and everyone a heads up about the parking lot at the end of Eastern Point. THERE IS SNOW – IT HAS NOT BEEN PLOWED – STOP THINKING YOUR FORD FOCUS HAS 4WD. Thanks. 🙂

Happy New Year!!!!

Today Ushers in the year of the Rabbit On the Chinese Calendar.

Every Chinese New Year is Symbolised by one of twelve animals. This Year It’s The Year of the Rabbit.

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. They are clever at business and being conscientious, never back out of a contract. They would make good gamblers for they have the uncanny gift of choosing the right thing. However, they seldom gamble, as they are conservative and wise. They are most compatible with those born in the years of the Sheep, Pig, and Dog.

Ok, What Animal are you?

Of course when I checked out my Animal I was a little disappointed. I thought maybe I was something cool like a; Tiger, Snake or a Rat.

But of course I’m a Pig, A freaking Pig? That’s the Story of my life!

Here is the description for someone like me born in the year of the Pig;

People born in the Year of the Pig are chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength. For Boar Year people, there is no left or right and there is no retreat. They have tremendous fortitude and great honesty. They don’t make many friends but they make them for life, and anyone having a Boar Year friend is fortunate for they are extremely loyal. They don’t talk much but have a great thirst for knowledge. They study a great deal and are generally well informed. Boar people are quick tempered, yet they hate arguments and quarreling. They are kind to their loved ones. No matter how bad problems seem to be, Boar people try to work them out, honestly if sometimes impulsively. They are most compatible with Rabbits and Sheep.

I guess it’s not that Bad. Some of the things are true. Not all.

OK NOW, WHAT ARE YOU!?

Tidbits and Deals

A few thoughts for the week to make you hungry. It’s a great week (if you are in the snowblower business)

  • Poetry In Unlikely Places Via Wicked Local Beverly -Poetry readings in the shallow end of the Cabot St. YMCA Pool? I find this very cool and I am sure something has already been done or will be done in Gtown.
  • Unique Deals Are Everywhere! Restaurants are really pulling out all the stops during this stormy season to get you in the door. Many are offering deals via social media good for that day. Minglewood  Tavern is blazing the trail by tweeting free pizza for first person in the door deals! Want to get quickfire deals?- you have to follow North Shore Dish on Twitter or Facebook. If you are a restaurant reading this and don’t know what I am talking about, I suggest reading this blog now.
  • Groupon and others hit the North Shore! Joey C has been posting these deals from Groupon, where you pay $25 dollars for $50 worth of goods. Lattitude 43 did a Groupon that sold an astonishing 1721 deals! The way they work is that Groupon takes ~50% of the value paid. So a small business is selling $50 dollar worth of goods for ~$12.50. This is really paying to get people in the door, hoping for repeat customers, banking that they drink a lot and hedging a few bets that these will expire. This is an amazing business model for Groupon and can be a great boost in your business. With purchasing these just be sure you are going to use them. LocalGinger (now Where) is a Groupon clone where you can get some deals on the North Shore as well.
  • Check out Ceia Kitchen in Newburyport – Every once in a while the wife and I love to get out and have a true dining experience. One where we aren’t cutting pizza into 1/20’s or cleaning rice and beans out of my 2 year old’s ears. Last Friday, we hit Ceia Kitchen in Newburyport. From start to finish it was one of my top dining experiences here since I moved from NYC.  The decor, the service, the wine, the menu, the food, and presentation are top notch. What I loved the most was the owner stopping over and spending time to listen and engage with us. She is committed to using social media (CeiaKitchenBar on twitter) and really doing a great job with it. They already have a new menu and I am hearing great things from many sources about the young chef. I can’t wait to go back to Ceia again soon! Here are some pics:

Finally – Can we stop using 2 overused terms in 2011 – Foodie and Craft Beer?

Thanks – Patrick!

Dave Sags Blues Party Tonight ~ With Special Guests Jay Aptt and Forrest Padgett

From Mr. Dave Sags,

I’m assuming and exhuming that we’re playing , so, here goes:  This thursday, the one and only “Blue” Jay Appt, plumbing magnate  and  Duke of Accutane. We’re toddling on the thin crust of the bottomless pit here: let’s hope that the knock on your door is not from the fuller brush man. Jay-Z is the man, having paid his dues with Mikey O’C. and Jack Webb Plumbing. He singhs, he plays gritarrh, grittily, and he’s just plane fungh to be around. Plus his parents are really something to be admired. Hopefully, they’ll be there, too, dancing and helping Jay tie his shoes.
Backing him up will be eine of my faves, Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, on concussion, skins, and heartbeet. No fool, he. Plays anything, anywhere, and always follows the basest, which means ME. Of course, Greg T. and his whammy bar and grill will be there as well as me, my, my. Ask your doctor if Blooz Party® is right for you. Your results may very….
