January in Rockport

Don’t be deterred by the sight of Rockport’s Christmas tree being hacked into bits…downtown Rockport is still happening, with lots of shops still open along with TWO coffee shops and a couple of restaurants! Besides, it’s cathartic to see the giant tree taken down in late January, even if it is in such a gruesome manner. You know that the time for excess partying is past and we have settled into one of our classic, cold and beautiful New England winters.

  1. What is with the hacking down approach this year? It’s a head-scratcher, that’s for sure. Was it too big to take down and haul away all at once as has been done every other year I can remember? It’s a bit disconcerting–like watching the poor tree lose its dignity a branch at a time 😦

    1. I’m not sure why they did it this way this year…budget cuts at the DPW, so one guy has to do it by himself – one branch at a time? I don’t know.
File under: Rockport’s Mysterious Ways (that’s a pretty fat file.)

  2. I think it is easier to cart it off limb by limb.
Christmas of 2001 it was trimmed of it’s limbs and turned into a Flag poll.
Much to the chagrin of some less Patrotic individuals..
    Kind of unique though….
