So Excited!

Yesterday I ordered a new Nikon d90. I have been so totally obsessed with getting a new camera, I’m driving everyone around me crazy. I even went to Hunt’s to check it out. I finally pushed the 1-click button at Amazon at 4:00. I haven’t sold the d70 yet, but it’ll happen. I feel like Joey when he got the new video camera. I sure hope it’s here by the weekend; I’m such a little kid when it comes to new toys! 🙂      —Sharon

Debbie Clarke Answers your Questions

A few years ago I was playing around with some video clips made with my $100 kodak camera.  Windows Movie Maker couldn’t produce the video due to resolution/light issues, so I downloaded a trial home movie maker with a pre-loaded, wacky video editor.  The video I produced gives directions for making egg glue, also known as glair, which is a glue that can be used to adhere gold leaf to a panel.  Last week I received some good questions from Scott Songfeather, a self-taught iconographer:

following are his questions and my response:

“Researching verre eglomise I was pleased to discover the vids of you at work with the technique and your blog.

1. Is the ratio of snow/crushed ice to the egg white critical? How much snow to egg white is good?

answer:  the ratio isn’t critical. I use about 2 tablespoons of snow/crushed ice.
2. Should the egg glue be used immediately, while still cold from the snow/ice?

answer:  the glue sets up to tack pretty quickly and can be used immediately, but it is better to let it sit refrigerated for 24 hours.  the albumen coagulate (chelaga) and other residue should be strained out to create a glue that will flow smoothly onto the surface to be gilded.

3. Is snow/ice necessary, or will water substitute satisfactorily?

answer:  Ralph Mayer in “The Artist’s Handbook” has a recipe using 1-2 tablespoons of water. I have never used this recipe, so I don’t know the results.  If Ralph says it works, it will work.

I paint icons in egg tempera and recently discovered online the Romanian technique of icon painting reversed on glass (verre eglomise/hinterglasmalerie) and plan to try it. Thus these questions.

Thanks, and best wishes,
Scott Songfeather

Jimmy T Survivor Casting Call Video Has Been Accepted

Jimmy T applied to be a contestant on Survivor and his video application has been accepted.  Read here-

jimmyt0907,

Congratulations!  Your Survivor Casting Call video entitled “Gloucester Fisherman” has been accepted.

Please check back on February 22 to see if your video was selected as part of the final 10.
Click this link to view your video:  http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/casting_call/video_player.php?vid=4164&playvid=yes

Forward this email to your friends and ask them to vote for your video or to enter their own.

Good Luck from CBS!

Won’t you check out Jimmy’s video and cast your vote for him?

Let’s help our boy get on and represent Gloucester.

Cathy Tarr instructs how to vote-

I registered at the CBS site – I thought that maybe you had to register to access voting. Normally I wouldn’t register and give up my email to a commercial site like that, but – not only is it a home boy, but how perfect would Jimmy be on Survivor?!

Anyway – I went to the rules and read the fine print. (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/casting_call/rules.php) A panel of judges picks the 10 finalists from this round, then the general public votes on the final 10, starting on February 22.

We have to wait until Monday to see if he made the Final 10. Good luck, Jimmy!

Frank LaFrance retires!

Photo Thom Falzarano

From Kristin Michel

At the final GHS home hockey game of the season on Wednesday night, EMT Frank LaFrance will “retire” from his duties.  Many of us have seen Frank at Newell Stadium or Dorothy Talbot Rink carrying his faded orange equipment bag, standing ready to attend to student athletes who may become injured during competitive play.

I have known Frank for several years and had no idea that he was a volunteer.  I was even more surprised when Frank told me how long he had been volunteering.  Frank has been proudly volunteering as an EMT for the GHS varsity football and hockey teams for the past 37 years!

One thing I do know about Frank is that he would never look for recognition, but I am sure you will agree that he certainly deserves it.  Frank has done a tremendous service to our athletes, our schools, and our city.

If you are in the stands on Wednesday night, look across the rink to the left of the American flag and join me in saluting Frank LaFrance for his dedication to our student athletes and his 37 years of service to the City of Gloucester.

Train Ride Video From Manuel Simoes

Joey

As we all know we Gloucesterites are known for not venturing off the island too often, and feel that Gloucester provides all that they need.  I recall as a kid, the term “going up the line” meaning we would take 128 South and go over the bridge.  And that was an adventure.  Beverly was usually was my destination, since my wife lived there during our dating years.

I decided during a trip into Boston to video the trip for my grandkids (6,4,3,and2) who love trains.  It was not a “Thomas The Train” adventure, but provided a relaxing ride watching the sun come up.

So for Gloucesterites that want to venture off the island, this is a much better way to go then going up the line, and dealing with the 128 traffic.   This is my Inbound Trip.

Local Music for this Week Feb.15 – Feb. 21

Click on the picture to go to schedule.

When I started this music post, I was able to put a great deal of time into the gathering, editing, footwork that goes into a weekly update of Cape Ann’s music scene. Now I have 3 jobs, my Mom in a nursing home, and my photography getting more in demand. My good friend, Joanne Silva, has happily taken over the GMG Local Music posts for me.  She has created  “Blueslvr’s Blog” . In addition to the weekly schedule,  she has also included a growing list of links to bands and venues. If there is an ultimate music fan, Joanne is it. I appreciate her expertise and passion.

Please welcome Joanne to the GMG community. And if you have a music event you would like posted, you can leave your email address and message on the form below, and I will forward it to her.

Thanks!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Sharon

Winter Doldrum Inspiration Please

Sitting here at the dock Paulie Frontiero came up with an idea for a post asking our loyal and fantastic readership what exactly would you like to see covered in these pages?

What subjects interest you the most when you come to GMG?  Or is it a combination of the diverse nature of our offerings that brings you back day after day?

Do you love the sports, the fishing industry, the art, The community event listings, the food?

Please leave a comment and help to direct us down a path which leads us to grow with the site and our community.

Thanks for your support.  Without your comments and participation it is difficult for our team to discern which directions we should delve deeper into to make GMG the best it can be.
