THE TIDE

IMG_8072

BY HENRY A. KENDALL.

The tide is in, anon is out,

Nor lingers at the turning;

And man, as restless as the sea,

Its thriftlessness is learning ;

Two busy brothers gathering in,

And having gathered, spurning.

The waves bring pearls upon the shore,

Yet on the shore no pearls there be :

For fortune varies ebb and flow,

And with the waves’ monotony ;

For hopes, like pearls and shells, come in,

But with the tide go out to sea.

Massachusetts Film Office Video Feature GMG Pics

Here’s a video in which folks from the Mass Film Office used a bunch of pictures from GMG for their commercial.  It would have been nice had they asked to use them but still cool to be in it.

There are scenes from the Essex set of Grown Ups with Adam Sandler along with The Proposal.  You can see the GMG pics I took last summer at 1minute 24 seconds in.

GMG Q&A Robert Newton- Head Cheese At The Cape Ann Community Cinema

Local Website everyone should know about (excluding GMG)
NorthShoreMovies.net. I’m wrangling all my unemployed movie critic friends to produce reviews and movie-related content.

How long have you lived in Gloucester?
Since the spring, but summers since birth. Actually, since before that. I’m pretty sure I was conceived in a cottage on Wheeler’s Point on Memorial Day in 1968.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
The fall, after the tourists and before the freeze.
Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
Lighthouse Beach after dark at low tide, when the bioluminescent microorganisms in the sand glow when you step on the soft damp sand, crushing their tiny, tiny exoskeletons.
What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?
Sebastian’s. Best sauce ever. I think it comes from Heaven.
What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
Virgilio’s, and not just because it’s next door.
What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?
Squam Rock, despite the lingering fear of tripping and falling to my death.
What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?
I’m not a big drinker, but Dog Bar sure does make good sandwiches.
What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Two Sisters, and not just because it’s on my walk to work.
What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?
I love the community vibe of the Block Parties, and the total chaos of Fiesta.
In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?
I’m a delicate flower and don’t take sun well, but give me a burn on a boat any day.
Who is your favorite local artist?
Haig Demarjian. His creations fascinate and scare me. His giant “Phantom” is looking at me right now.
Which is your favorite local beach?
Good Harbor. Egg salad sandwiches and Lik-A-Maids from the snack bar make some of my favorite childhood memories.
Who has the best chowder in town?
Last Stop. One of the things I miss most about showing movies in East Gloucester.
Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog?
Kenny MacCarthy’s BlynmanWatch.com
Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
Clam chowder, no question about it (and do I even need to say “not Manhattan“?)
What were your thoughts on The Downtown Block Parties last year?
Extremely well organized, and I look forward to seeing them grow.
What is your favorite local band?
What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Their debut album is a work of friggin’ aht.

GMG Power Rankings #3

Sharon and Mike being #1 and #2 are really no brainers but now we get into complex territory.

There’s a cluster of people who could esily move up and down the rankings in the 3-5 range, but here we go.

In the number 3 spot we have David Cox.  David has an incredible passion for his photography.  You combine that with his love of Gloucester and taking beautiful portraits of people at all of Gloucester’s events and his contributions to GMG have been enormous.

There have been so many events that I’ve either had to manage or not be able to get to due to work and David has covered a good many of them for us.  He still hasn’t figured out how to use a computer  but he makes 3 or 4 cds of his work from each event at Walgreens and brings them down for me to upload.

We’ve been fortunate enough to view David’s work from the Block Parties, The Sail Gloucester and Schooner Festivals, The Annisquam Sea Fair, The Gloucester High Football Games every week, The Sidewalk Bazaar and much much more.

Ernie Morin told me once that it’s easy to take a picture of a person but it’s a gifted photographer that can capture a portrait of those people which capture their essence.  David capture portraits of people- their essence.

He is a gifted photographer and has become a good friend, always making me laugh with his silliness.

JJ Jinglenuts Latest Victim

When I pulled into the driveway last night after a long day at work our cat JJ Jinglenuts scampered off the walkway that leads to the entrance at the homestead.

What he left behind was his latest victim- this here mouse.  I didn’t even think to stop and take the picture because I was hoping I could catch the Bean and Snoop Maddie Mad before they were fast asleep.  Luckily The Bean was still awake in her bed.  I gave her the news that JJ got a zucchi (what us Sicilians call mice).  I told her that the zucchi was still on the front steps so she could see it if she wanted.

But then she started asking questions.  She asked why it didn’t run away to which I said “because JJ got him”.  Then somehow or other it got around to the fact that the zucchi was dead.  She said-  “so he’s sleeping?”  I said no, he won’t be waking up, he’s dead.  I suddenly became terrified at what questions she was going to ask next because I really hadn’t thought the whole what happens when you die thing through.  -So I winged it.

I told her that the zucchi will be going to heaven and visit Grandma Felicia.  Then she asked if the zucchi would have wings to which I replies yes.  Then she asked what Grandma Felicia was like.  I told her she was beautiful and she was incredibly loving and that we used to go over her house every Sunday for Pasta Zugu (spaghetti and sauce) and that she was the most incredible cook.

Next she asked where angels sleep.  I told her that they sleep in the clouds and that everyone is happy and loving in heaven.  Then we talked about Halos for quite a bit.  She wasn’t getting the concept for a while but I think she finally got it.  I told her they were circles of light that hover over your head when you are an angel.  She asked if they follow you around to which I replied yes.

Then I told her I was going to take my shower.  I kissed her on her forehead and told her sweet dreams like I always do.  And she always replies the same thing back- sweet dreams Fa-Fa (that’s what she calls me).
