Gloucester Doors- Captain Elias Davis House

The Captain Elias Davis House is part of Cape Ann Museum.
From the Cape Ann Museum website-
“The Captain Elias Davis house, built in 1804 by one of Gloucester’s successful sea captains, is part of the Cape Ann Museum.Six of the house’s 12 rooms are open to visitors. The house is furnished and decorated in keeping with domestic life in the early 19th century.

Many of the objects in the house actually belonged to Elias Davis and his descendants: a drawing of the Davis family crest from County Hereford, England; a portrait of the Captain painted c.1790 by an unknown Antwerp artist; the outfitted medicine chest and instruction book used by Captain Davis in his role as ship’s doctor; passports for two Davis family vessels, the ship Cadmus and the brig Augusta, signed by James Madison and John Adams respectively; the rockerless wooden cradle used by Elias Davis, Jr. aboard ship when he traveled with his parents; a sampler stitched by Captain Davis’s daughter Mary, naming all 13 of the Captain’s children; and a pencil drawing of the house itself, done from memory by son Soloman Haskell Davis in 1830 while he was away at sea…….. click this text to go to the Cape Ann Museum Website and read the rest

Figuring it out- for the techies

Well I’ve been obsessed with trying to improve the video quality for you guys.  My old camera, the one that grew with the blog since the inception only shot in standard definition and it had been gnawing at me.

So after selling some pictures at The Cormorant Shop and my old camera to good egg Brenda Malloy I bought myself the updated version of my old camera which shoots video in hi def.

There was a slight problem however.  I came to realize that although the video quality is leaps ahead of what I was producing before, most people couldn’t enjoy it because it was producing a huge file which bogged everyone’s computers down.  Frustrated….GRRRRRRR!

So I researched and researched and tried this and that and did more research and tinkered with some more stuff and finally I think I’ve got it down!

Look for part three of The offloading of the Angela Rose at the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction at 8AM.  I’m going to go back and recompress the other videos so people can actually watch them also.

Please let me know if the videos stream alright for you.

Beach Traffic on the Weekends

In today’s Times there was a piece about the messy traffic when out-of-towners come to Good Harbor. We all agree that it’s a pain to get anywhere on the weekends.

Realist responded to the article:

“I’m glad I’ve learned to navigate some of the side streets near Good Harbor beach to avoid the long line of traffic from S&S. Still, it’s horrible during the morning rush on Saturday or Sunday from all these people trying to get to the beach on the weekend. I try to stay off the roads from 9AM till at least 1PM. Then you’re safe for a couple of hours until the beach crowds start leaving…then it’s chaos again. It’s too bad the out-of-towners take over Cape Ann on the weekends for the beaches here, but it’s a fact.”

Well a couple of days ago, I saw Holland’s solution to their traffic issues.  Maybe we should think about it.

Matt Cooney- Lobsterman Getting Ready To Work On A Pile Of Traps

Matt and his son have been working in the yard on a pile of traps for a while now.  New traps can cost close to $80 so when you can buy decent used traps you can save a good amount of money.  The used traps that lobstermen usually buy need to be “gone through”.   Gone through meaning- the knitted heads may need repairing, the wooden slats on the bottom of the trap may need to be replaced to protect the bottom of the trap from wear, the escape vents might need new hog rings to keep them secure or the trap might just need to be brushed off from dead growth.

Where Zat? – New Clue

Update on the clue: That’s not a rock.

Gloucester Seafood Display Auction-Hake

Pictured below is hake.  Hake is commonly used in fish cakes.  It’s a good white meat fish.

Back when we used to handle fish an old time fisherman- Leo the Flounder would hang out in the mornings and tell old waterfront stories.  He spent a good part of the last ten years of his life down the dock, sipping coffee and keeping us informed on what was happening around town.  He was a character a real waterfront character and I miss him.

Anyway, about twice a year Leo would make a big pan of (poopieties) – not the right spelling but sounds exactly the way it is spelled.  Poopieties were hake fish cakes fried up in the good Italian olive oil.

When we had a big trip of hake we would give Leo a couple of steakers (large hake) and he would fry up a batch.  The thing I loved about them and I’ll never forget was the amount of garlic he would use.  He’d try to kill you with the garlic.  We would normally be working so hard that we would pound down a ridiculous number of poopieties and then as the day went on and you were sweating you could smell it coming out your pores.

Good times-  I miss you Flounder.

From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Big fun this week as Justin Quinn returns for a nite of Chicago-style blues. Justin is a fine harpist and vocalist and has great cowboy boots. He’ll be burnin’ his leather on  the floor with the likes of Jon Ross, formerly Duke Robillard’s bassist, now on guitar; got that old sound goin’…. and Per Hanson, James Cotton’s drummer on…guess….drums! Greg and I will be there too, meddling and obfuscating our way thru the furrows of the blues.

This is a great unit….some of you may have purchased a CD last time around. Bring some cash and buy another one  this time , you won’t be disappointed!

Again, I lost a lot of my fan files, so if you know someone who wants in, send ’em to me!”

KBGM Release Party Reminder

Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30 and in Gloucester at Elliotts at the Blackburn on Friday, July 31. The band, also known as KBMG, will play in support of their latest studio album, Western Color. KBMG played most recently to a fantastic audience at the Berklee Performance Center and are pleased to be back in Boston.

Their first combined full-length studio effort, Western Color, overflows with wasted love, light, rumors, and castaways—a ragged journey of sound and story combining folk, rock, and roots influences.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area.

CD’s will be available for purchase. Featuring new hits, Goodnight Romeo, When it Comes Down to Love, Raggedy and more!

Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud7NoYKz_9A for the Goodnight Romeo video

Thanks and see you soon!

Joe Brancaleone- Hemoglobin Lighted Long Board

Here’s Joe Brancaleone with one of his latest long board creations.  This board has lights underneath the board which make it outlandishly cool.  If I were coordinated enough to get on a skateboard, I’d be all over it!

Check out the Hemoglobin Boarding Co Official Site here

You just gotta love all the young creative people in our community.  We are so incredibly blessed to have the creative scene that we do.  People like Emile, Mike and Tom making short films, the gang at The Hive, the artists recording music downstairs at CABI just to name a tiny few.  Then you have the photographers like Mark Teiwes and Ernie doing their edgy stuff.  We have Rob Newton who is fully committed to bring us great movies at Cape Ann Community Cinema, the list goes on and on and on….

Keep it fresh y’all                   and thank you.
