This Morning (Saturday June 5th) The International Dory Race Eliminations are being held at Niles Beach. They start at 8:30AM.
Besides being a fantastic event, it may be your last opportunity to wish Jimmy T well before he shoves off as a “fish inspector” down in the Gulf.;)
Here’s video taken just this week of the new Grand Banks Dories being built for the International Dory Group here in Gloucester. They are adding 3 more dories to the many dories that you are able to use for a simple $50 yearly fee.
There’s also a huge bell in this video which was salvaged from the Schooner Esperanto which you may find interesting.

From The Website of Tom Welch which has much more information here
Gloucester Fishing Schooner, “Esperanto”, 1920
Captain “Marty” Welch
The schooner Esperanto was designed by Tom McManus of Boston, built by Tarr and James Shipbuilders of Essex, Massachusetts, and launched on June 27, 1906. Esperanto was 107 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 11 feet deep. Esperanto’s gross weight was 140 tons, and her net weight was 91 tons. She was named for the international language of Esperanto, which means literally “the hoping one”.
Despite the highly dangerous nature of fishing in the north Atlantic from sailing vessels, and the terrible death toll that resulted, there was only one life lost on Esperanto. On 17 March 1916, crewman John Burnham of Gloucester was knocked overboard by the main boom, and drowned.
On May 30, 1921, just months after winning the International Fisherman’s Schooner Race in Halifax, Esperanto struck the submerged wreck of the “S. S. State of Virginia” off Sable Island, and sank. The crew manned Esperanto’s dories and rowed away, and were eventually rescued. The skipper on that trip was Capt. Tom Benham. Isaiah Gosbee, the cook from the 1920 races, was among those aboard Esperanto that day.
Attempts were made to salvage Esperanto, and she was actually raised by pontoons several times, but each time she slipped beneath the waves again. After a month of attempts, the efforts to raise her had caused such damage that the salvage operation was reluctantly halted.
Some people get very upset when I post pictures of our attack kitty JJ Jinglenut’s fresh kills so I offer fair warning. Do not click on the Alvin and The Chipmunks pic If you don’t want to see the slide show of JJ’s latest victim up close and personal.
Also DO NOT CLICK HERE if you do not want to see the video of how the Bean disposed of said chipmunk.

The Jeff Weaver GMG Interview Part II
One of the best values in Gloucester- in Jeff’s Gallery he has over sized postcards of his work which can be framed and put on your walls. They are only $3. I’m planning on going in and buying 4 or five of them as long as the sizes are such that I can buy standard sized frames for them.
The first in a four part series
Finally I got to interview one of my favorite artists. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I enjoyed conducting it.
John Morris came by to talk about his new book a 448 page documentation of Gloucester Fishing in the age of sail (1623-1939).
John spent 10 years of his life writing and researching this book. Watch the video and see some of the incredible pictures and details within this masterpiece.

I just got a new portable pocket camera support made by Manfrotto. Manfrotto is the gold standard in design and what the professionals use for camera supports such as tripods. Most professional photographers and videographers have some of their equipment. I was reading a tech site which listed top ten must have gadgets for photographers and the Manfrotto Modopocket was listed and it looked like a very interesting alternative to having to carry a tripod around for those situations when you want to take a long exposure or conduct an interview without the shake and vibration which can make an interview look less than professional (not that anything I do should ever be confused with something professional).
I went to the reviews on the little piece of equipment and the people who had purchased it all wrote glowing reviews. The prices I saw listed for them in a google shopping search ranged from $20-$35. I got mine from Adorama Camera for $20 including free shipping. I got to use it a bunch yesterday and I am extremely happy with the purchase.
It folds up flat at the base of the camera and makes my Sony DSC H20 still pocketable which to me is crucial. The camera you can’t pocket is worth 20% of the camera I can always have on me to capture stuff for you guys. The construction is solid and engineering a marvel. I’m really digging it.
Check out the first video I took with it below. Click on the HD version to see the results I was able to achieve shooting inside of a lobster crate with zero clearance. The camera was sitting flush inside the back of the crate. The sound you hear during the lobster vs crab segment is the hum of our lobster tank pumps.
Here’s a link to where you can get it
Here is a bunch of pictures of different people using the Tiny Manfrotto Modopocket

Here is exclusive Video Shot At my Dock This Morning Showing the CBS Amazing Race Teams Boarding Gloucester Fishing Boats- The Jennie C, No Excuses, Karen Lynn, Tuna.Com, Lady J and Lady Lane.
I accidentally call it the Great Race in the video but I know it’s called The Amazing Race.
You can see the teams dressed in different colors walking down the gangway to board the fishing boats at the State Fish Pier. Then they head out single file past the historic Paint Factory to Gloucester’s inner harbor where they passed by The Greasy Pole and Hammond Castle en route back to The Eastern point Yacht club where they disembarked and the race begins. On East Main Street one of the teams stopped the Mrs and her friends who just got out of a run-fit class for directions to Boston’s Logan Airport. She had to sign a release stating that she may be on TV.
One team stopped while in traffic on East Main St and rolled down their window. It was a good looking man and woman who asked how to get to Logan. When the car stopped two cameramen popped out of SUV which was right behind the man and woman race team who were rolling seperately in a Smart Car. The cameramen and a microphone were shoved in the Mrs face and when she replied how to get to Logan the team told her not to speak to anyone else. Then they signed the releases and were off.
I’ll post many more pictures of the teams over the course of the next few days. if you are looking at the video right now at 6:58PM it may be fuzzy but the quality will improve within an hour when it is fully processed by YouTube.
Many More Pics and Video Coming Later
In this picture when you click for full size you can see the camera men in front of each team as they sit on lobster traps on the stern of each boat
