My View of Life on the Dock

It has been just over 6 months since the first airing of the “ Woman Owned Businesses on the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway” on Chronicle WCVB Ch.5.
Pauline Bresnahan writes, “We have seen a tremendous amount of visitors to our trail since because of that show. We have also mailed about one hundred copies of our trail map when we get a request either on our Facebook page or when they call a shop.
“We can’t begin to thank the Chronicle crew from the show. We have seen visitors from Needham, Pembroke, Roslindale, Methuen, Holliston, Quincy, Tewksbury, Chelmsford, Gardner, Andover, Gloucester, Rockport, Cambridge, Boston, Arlington, just to name a few. (courtesy photos – find more on the Facebook page)

“We were thrilled to have visitors arrive on a small bus from the Council on Aging in Topsfield MA. We encourage small tours when organizations contact us, including this exciting news:
“Recently we were contacted by an Austin-Healey Auto owners group. They will be holding a weekend summit in Beverly and have asked to do part of our trail on an early morning in August. They have a three hour window and have asked for information. We are very excited to host this group of about 60 owners and their spouses. Some of us will offer refreshments and small gift pack on information about our own towns. “We have connected four communities along a beautiful road by working together. It has been awesome!”-
photo challenge: can you name the stars with an Austin-Healey? Look forward to seeing photographs of Austin Healeys August 2018 in Gloucester and along the Byway.

In case you missed the wonderful tv special about these local businesses, here’s the link to watch the video (it’s not on YouTube, yet or downloadable or I’d upload it here in the post): CHRONICLE WCVB Channel 5: Business Meeting: The Women of the Byway, plus stills from the Chronicle video (all images in this post are from the Chronicle story shot by Carl Vieira), and some of the transcription excerpt from the show:

“THIS IS CHRONICLE ON WCVB CHANNEL 5. One, two, three…”We have a little bit of everything”…seven, eight, nine…”And we specialize in mid-century Danish modern furnishings…” Along this Massaschusetts shoreline, a sisterhood of shops invites browsing…”There’s room enough in this business for everyone”…

host Anthony Everett- “Good evening. Working Women are our focus tonight. Opening night of the 13th Annual Massachusetts Conference For Women at the Boston Convention Center (Boston). And Shanya Seymour is there now.
host Shayna Seymour– “Hi, Anthony! Well, thousands of women have gathered here to hear Gloria Steinem, and I just got off the stage with Bethanny Frankel and she’s going to join us a little bit later in this show. Now, the conference also features professional networking. Best selling authors are here to talk, as well as products from many different female entrepreneurs…NOW, many of those entreprenurs are women that (narrator) may have met on a very scenic north shore shopping trail!”
[cue to story produced by Clint Conley and vidographer Carl Vieira, and narrated by _____]
“(Narrator) The Essex Scenic Coastal Byway. Ninety miles of salt marsh and working waterfronts, dotted with famous clam shacks, antique stores, and open coastal dreamscapes, stretching from Lynn to Salisbury. The (Essex) Coastal (Scenic) Byway is ONE OF THE PRETTIEST, MOST INTERESTING and DISTINCTIVE DRIVES IN THE STATE. Now you can approach it from a distinctly feminine point of view. “It’s ten woman owned businesses in a ten mile stretch along the coastal byway.” A group of women have joined forces to market themeselves with a brochure, a sort of coastal byway treasure map. “It’s all in a straight line on our map and we call ourselves by number. I am number one on the map, so I’ll say, go [she points], number two is a mile up the street.”

The Cave- cheese, wine, and chocolate shop, 44 Main Street, #GloucesterMA, is another great local businesses where one stop shopping works! On Thanksgiving weekend, Small Business Saturday, the jingle of the opening door was steady. Customers were in and out picking up host gifts and a new specialty cheese, wine or pate. Laura remembers her regulars and their particular favorite eats and drinks, and better still what they might like to try next.

Miniature button bouquets, holiday linens, Folly Cove Deigns, original and handmade gifts galore!
Saturday morning, November 24th, Present Gloucester is unveiling their beautiful selection of handmade ornaments. I was fortunate to have a sneak peak today. Created by eighteen local Cape Ann artists, I assure you, these treasures will go quickly. Get to Present this weekend, while supplies last! Present Gloucester is located at 261 Main Street.
Joey asked Pauline’s Gifts for information about the 6th annual Small Business Saturday and a list of specials. She was an early adapter. Here it is, and thanks Pauline!
“In 2011 the Senate unanimously supported Small Business Saturday, and in 2012 all 50 states had participants. This one day event is bringing awareness of the importance in supporting your Local Small Businesses and giving many small businesses a way to promote at no cost to them. If you are an American Express merchant you are able to use the tools made available to you by AMEX. Many of us receive banners, balloons, postcards, reusable bags, and lots of other swag to use for our businesses. Even those who do not take AMEX are able to utilize the promotion working with a Neighborhood Champion. These champions obtain the materials and are able to share with other businesses in their neighborhood. In 2016 there were over 6,700 Neighborhood Champions in the country. Small business owners embrace the day. Through their own promotional efforts small business owners generated an estimated $15.4 billion dollars on Small Business Saturday in 2016.” GMG search pulls up posts about Small Business Saturday in 2012. Some of the 2017 GMG posts: Bridgette’s post, Donna’s post, Kim’s post about PRESENT, and GMG podcast (timestamped!)
