Event will celebrate music and dance:Ā Gund Kwok Asian Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe; recent immigrants from Nepal will perform music of the Gandharvas; indigenous music of Greece led by Vasilis Kostas; salsa lesson from Eli Lady Pabon; and music from Latin Logic (photo above).

I wonder if Carlos Menenzes (Cape Ann Big Band;Jambalaya horns, O’Maley), Zach Gorrell, Docksiders, and other area artists and musicians know these groups and vice versa?

Photos from an early morning walk all around Rockport Harbor (sub0zero walk I should add). My technique for photographing when it’s 10 degrees out is to snap away until my fingers can’t stand it any more, run back to the car, which has been left running, warm up, and then try again. Repeat in ten to fifteen minute intervals. I have the utmost respect for the fishermen; I don’t understandĀ how theyĀ can work on the water when the air temperature is so cold.

Although votes did not come in allĀ Cape Ann for categories you thought might be a shoe-in: best beach, bakery, breakfast, burger, clam chowder, farmer’s market, art gallery, art anything (!), museum, or attraction — Gloucester and all of Cape Ann businesses receive a lot of deserved attention!Ā Signing in to voteĀ may beĀ a barrier to entry for some. Still, 150,000+ votes were cast. You can check out what won inĀ many additional categories in the 300pp monster issue.

The Red Shed Film Fest in Rockport!

Coming up on Monday, the 16th! Local filmmakers will showcase their work in a micro-film fest, the Red Shed Film Fest (in honor of the Motif in honor of Motif No.1 Day in honor of the arts…).

Starting at 7pm , short films will screen in Rockport Music’s beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center. A party on the 3rd floor will follow the screening, with a cash bar and light food from the legendary Willow Rest. By “party” I mean: party, Rockport-style, where we stay up past 8pm, so bear this in mind in terms of your expectations. This doesn’t mean it won’t be fun, maybe even raucous! By Rockport standards! Which is still great!

The Red Shed Film Fest is a small but mighty showcase for ourĀ burgeoning local film scene. If you like short films and can tolerate other people and want to support art, this event is for YOU!

Come out to the Red Shed Film Fest on May 16th. The RSFF kicks off the week leading up to Motif No.1 Day on Saturday, and is a great way to begin the week. Admission is suggested donation. Your donations support the free programming of the Motif No.1 Day festival, celebrating Rockport across the arts, featuring film, dance, music and poetry. This is it. Ā Right now. Ā August probably gives us, here in Gloucester, more entertainment choices than any other month — I haven’t really studied this, it just feels that way, but I’ll bet it’s true.

Shalin Liu‘s busy schedule is a prime example. Ā Many of their concerts are sold out, but here are a few choice shows we recommend, all of which have good seats left.

Rich RobinsonĀ of The Black Crowes this Thursday, August 6th. Ā They’re billing this show asĀ ONE MAN, FIVE GUITARS AND TRUE ARTISTRY. Ā No kidding. Ā Get tickets here.

A.J. CroceĀ next Wednesday, August 12. Ā Knowing he’s son of Jim Croce might be enough to get you there. Ā ButĀ you might as well just take it from Willie Nelson, who said, “A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music, he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics and quality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!”

And then there’s the Rockport Jazz Festival from August 13-16, featuring one of my newest friends, Sean Jones, on August 15. Ā Sean was Henri Smith’s special guest at Saturday’s Block Party in Beverly and let’s just say he owned the crowd of thousands, who showed up. Ā Expect great things from Sean Jones over the next few years!

Hereā€™sĀ aĀ sneak peek of Miranda Russell, accompanied by Justin Piper and Joe Kessler, performing ā€œJoleneā€ on ā€œLocal Music Seen with Allen Estes.ā€ She will be Allenā€™s guest this week through to May 10, 2015. Airing Wednesdays at 6:30 pm, Fridays at 1:30 pm and Sundays at 6:00 pm, on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.

After you watch her on TV youā€™re really going to want to see her live ā€” and youā€™re in luck. Ā Miranda will be at Shalin Liu in Rockport next Thursday & FridayĀ May 7 & 8. This was a show not to be missed and according to several of the production team members, was one of the best they’ve ever producedĀ at the Shalin Liu. I couldn’t agree more! Rick HolmstromĀ on guitar,Ā JeffĀ Turmes, on bass, and Stephen Hodges on drums.Ā Bring back Mavis and the Rick Holmstrom Band-an extraordinary group of talented musicians.

 

 

You can see Mavis, along with her father Pop Staples and siblings,Ā the Staple Singers,Ā come in at aroundĀ one minute. The song was included in the film TheĀ Last Waltz (directed by Martin Scorsese), a documentaryĀ about The Band’s last concert.Ā

I am in love with this building. Ā From the inside and out. Ā For so many reasons.

If you haven’t seen a performance at the Shalin Liu, you really need to.

I snapped these quick shots while out for a run the other afternoon. Ā While my knowledge of architecture is very limited, my fascination for lines, angles, and the nuances of it all is pretty significant. Ā Little parts of the whole have always been of interest to me, I guess.

The former lead singer and creative force behind the group YES,Ā Jon Anderson stands as one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock. His distinctive high tenor remained a fixture on mainstream rock radio for decades, fronting the bandā€™s biggest hits throughout the 70ā€™s and 80ā€™s including ā€œIā€™ve Seen All Good People,ā€ ā€œRoundabout,ā€ and ā€œOwner of a Lonely Heart.ā€ He was also primarily responsible for many of the bandā€™s epic pieces like ā€œClose to the Edge,ā€ ā€œAwakenā€ and ā€œThe Gates of Delirium.ā€ Since parting ways with YES, Anderson has continued his idiosyncratic musical path, touring and releasing solo records while delving into folk and world music. Bluesy Rock ā€˜nā€™ Roller Peter Wolf is best known for his stretch as the front man with the J. Geils Blues Band, where he was known for his stage antics and quick wit. After seeing the J. Geils Band in concert for the first time, Wolf immediately joined the band where he became not only the leader of the group, but also handled much of the groupā€™s business affairs. The band soon became well known for their vivacious and exciting live performances. After gaining recognition in New England, they caught the attention of Bill Graham, a well-known promoter who continued to book them, helping them gain fans in every city they visited.

After the band parted ways in 1983 due to creative differences, Wolf took on a solo career releasing seven solo albums and collaborating with countless musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. His sixth solo albumĀ SleeplessĀ was listed as one of the 500 ā€œGreatest Albums of All Timeā€ byĀ Rolling Stonemagazine in 2002, and his most recent release, 2010ā€™sĀ Midnight Souvenirs, won best album at the Boston Music Awards Some of his best solo hits include ā€œCome as You Areā€, ā€œLights Outā€, ā€œ99 Worldsā€ and ā€œNothing But the Wheelā€.

Wolf will be joining us at the Shalin Liu Performance Center with a special acoustic show to share some of his new music, old favorites, and that hugely charismatic stage presence for which he is so well known.
