Jo-Anne Castano Forwards Links To Lobstering and Quarry Working in the the 30’s in Gloucester and Rockport

Hi Joey,

I just remembered these so went searching and thought you might like them.   These are from The Library of Congress, American Memory.  http://memory.loc.gov/

If you do a search for "Gor Svenson" you’ll find about 7 web pages of oral history.  I copied down some excerpts below to give you an idea of the stories from the WPA era, living in Glouceter and Rockport. It is a record of a series of interviews with a Swedish-born American who was for most of his adult years a quarry-worker in Gloucester (Bay View and Lanesville) and Rockport, Massachusetts and who is now (then) engaged in lobstering. (1938)  How much has changed since then?  Stories are flavorfully Cape Ann.

Goes along with today’s events, Lookin’ For the Sunny Side of the Stree – America’s 1930’s in Gloucester.

Enjoy,Jo-

Right back at YA!, Ed Collard

Ed Collard’s an all around nice guy and does some great stuff that goes unnoticed for the City of Gloucester.

BUT!

He can “Bust’em” with the Best! But. Can he take it?

Here’s a not to fictional typical conversation between Joey(the female character in this movie) and Ed Collard (the man sitting at the desk). I’ve personally witnessed a few of these.

Dory Rowing Is A 12 Month Activity

image

The International Dory Race Committee would like everyone to know that there are still two freshly painted practice dories in the water and available for use all through the winter.

For more information and to sign up or sign up a friend or loved one as a holiday gift you can check out the International Dory Website here (a full year membership is only $60)

Membership is $60 for 1 year, and runs January to January. Membership includes use of committee dories, loaner equipment, and race and committee event invitations. To become a member, download the membership form here.

Erik Dombrowski writes-

Many thanks to the people who volunteered some time to haul the race dories last weekend.  An excellent turn-out by our members allowed us to finish by 9 AM and make light work of putting the dories to rest for the winter.

Please keep in mind, though that we currently have 2 practice boats with freshly painted bottoms that will be in the water to be rowed all winter.  We don’t want to discourage winter rowing by true iron men & women like Damon & Hilary!!!

See you all soon.

Erik

The Big Fish from deb clarke

This is The Big Fish (a blue faced cichlid we named ‘fat boy’) that hangs in our long narrow hallway.  The painting is oil with mixed media on linen, painted in 1995.  We had a 35 gallon fish tank.  This Big Boy ate every other fish in the tank, including several crayfish, then grew to an amazing size.  sometimes i think to sell this, several people have ‘tried it out’ on their wall, for a few years it was displayed at The Bookstore on Main Street in Gloucester.  Now, I say hello to Fat Boy everytime i hang a coat, store a painting, or head to the downstairs laundry.
best,
deb.

Author Sally Goldenbaum Talks Gloucester and New Mystery Book A Holiday Yarn

Sally talks about Gloucester and a whole ton of Gloucester references in her new mystery “A Holiday Yarn”

Sally will be reading and signing her new book “A Holiday Yarn,” this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Rockport Library.

You can check out Sally Goldenbaum’s website and blog here

The blog portion of her site can be accessed by clicking the tab labeled “Sally’s Porch”.  My guess is that 95% of the people that go to her site probably never knew she had a blog that was attached to her site because they didn’t know that the “Sally’s Porch” tab is what would land you there.  A more appropriate label for that tab would probably be “blog” or “Sally’s Blog”.

Carol McKenna Sketchbook Project Update

Sketchbook Project 2011

from Carol McKenna

In creatively thinking about how I would protect my Sketch Book for this project, it took several weeks of reflection and experimenting before I decided what I would do. My main purpose was to protect the book. My second concern was to “keep it simple”. My life can be rather complex so I didn’t need to add to the chaos that can so randomly occur. Therefore, I now have a very simple, yet “artsy” cover for my Sketchbook.

Cover for Sketchbook Project 2011

Hopefully, you will be able to see the picture as I try to figure the wordpress technique of uploading photos and what happens to them after you have uploaded them And you thought us Artists just sit around and play all day ~ HUH! ~ Enjoy.

Hugs and namaste,

Carol McKenna

Art Rock Found! Coincidence?

Last Sunday while driving around the Back Shore I decided to stop at the Elks club Parking lot and Sketch the scene before me on a Rock. Yeah, I know I’m Nuts.

I left it across the street from the Elks Club in the rocks where the Hotel has a sitting area.

I didn’t know my Son was going to bring his friends to the Elks Club to reserve it for their Wedding next year. I posted the Rock I sketched on here on GMG about 11am. I got a phone call at 2:30pm  from my son Paul the III telling me they found it. They thought my Son set it up, but he had no idea what I did that morning and I had no idea what he was going to do that day. (Strange ain’t it?) after they reserved the Elks club they walked down the road to where I left the “Art Rock”

Here is the email my son sent me;

Hey Dad, Heres the Picture of them holding the rock. They found it when they walked across from the elks to see where their wedding pictures will be taken. We were all standing around it and tom said “that rock has your name on it” Everyone thought my son Paul set it up. But he did’nt know anything about it. Now that’s a Coincidence! Tom and Joselin are getting married at Good Harbor Beach on labor day 2011 and having the reception at the elks.
Here’s a photo of Tom and his Fiance holding the ROCK. Good Luck Guys!! I hope you enjoy the Rock!

Linda rae Castagna Has Some Nice Things To Say

Good morning, Gloucester, literally.  We are visiting once again from Milford, New Jersey.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to see your excellent website every day when we are 5 plus hours away?  To see your plates of food, to drool, and not be satisfied.  Really, we can’t hop in the car just for breakfast or lunch, and then back home.  So when we do visit, we delight in visiting the restaurants that you have blessed with your pictures.  I would like to add one.  My husband loved his seafood dish from Passports yesterday.
I am also adding a picture I took with my 4g iPhone (absolutely love Apple products, of which I have many).  We watched as it turned from grey and dreary to the sun shining through and changing the mood of the day.
Thank you for your wonderful website.  An amazing amount of work, I know.  Blessings,
Linda rae and Rob
