The GCC grants have primed countless programs that would not have been possible without that support. The unheralded community volunteers that put in the time and effort to administer the process are fantastic. I look forward to seeing the annual choices. Good luck everyone!

The Gloucester Cultural Council is currently accepting applications for grant funding for community-based projects in the arts, humanities and sciences for the FY 2017 round of funding. Each year, organizations, schools and individuals are invited to apply to the Local Cultural Council for funding to support projects that promote rich cultural experiences in the Gloucester community. This year, all applicants must submit their proposals via the new online system and no hard copy applications will be accepted.
The Gloucester Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. The Gloucester Cultural Council guidelines, project priorities and online applications are available at http://www.mass-culture.org/Gloucester.

Strong Leather Company.
In business since 1932, Strong Leather is a major player in producing essential gear for law enforcement such as leather belts, holsters, wallets and accessories. They wholesale to police and military suppliers. They have made local products for Gloucester and Rockport police and fire departments and sometimes Essex and Ipswich. Besides the leather factory, offshoot businesses on site for three generations of the Cutter family include advertising and product and promotional projects. Prior to the leather business, the historic factory was built and incorporated in 1884. Gloucester Net & Twine quickly ramped up as a major ancillary supplier for the fishing industry. It’s one of the largest oldest factories still standing and was placed on the National Historic Registry in 1996. Eight volumes of historic plan books for Gloucester Net & Twine Company are in the collection of Phillips Library, Peabody Essex Museum.
Gloucester Net & Twine Company is included in the National Park Service maritime history trail in MA. Gloucester is one of the cities with the most sites–only Boston has more. Besides this historic factory building, other Gloucester sites on the maritime trail include: Our Lady of Good Voyage, East Gloucester Square Historic District, Man at the Wheel, Schooner Adventure, Ten Pound Light, Eastern Point Light Station, and Annisquam Harbor Light Station.

July 4th weekend started early. We spent the morning on Stellwagen thanks to 7 Seas Whale Watch. The main spotting was incredible: Hancock and Shuffleboard, two female humpbacks, were feeding together. Alongside us reaching for railings were folks from Chelmsford, Boston, Boulder, Sweden, Germany, and Spain. The World Wildlife fund and many other ‘top’ lists rank Massachusetts as one of the top 10 whale watching cruise spots available in the world. Locals know that it’s Gloucester that’s the ultimate place to buy that whale watch ticket. We have the best whale watch companies with marine biologists and researchers on board and decades of research and authority in the field. Michelle B led the trip today. She’s awesome.
You can direct dial ALL the Gloucester whale watching companies from the HarborWalk whale marker. The “belle of the bay”, Salt, is featured on the plaque. We didn’t see her today but boats have seen her again this summer.

Back in port, everyone fanned out to downtown Gloucester. We met friends at the very packed Beauport Hotel, happy to be seated for a late lunch. Sherrie DeLorenzo was on site making sure things were buttoned down. They were. (My photo wasn’t. Sorry, Sherrie!) The concierge dynamo Chris and crew Emily were a visible and valuable resource right in the heart of the lobby. Lunch was delicious and the service was excellent. The adage a great waiter never waits was true today. Ask for Faith! Beauport is at capacity for Sunday.

Here’s a map of the Gloucester hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfast and you name it lodging that I whipped up in 2014 when I was serving on the tourism commission. I was curious where all these places were in relation to downtown. Laura Dow of Vista Motel and Laura Baker of Castle Manor Inn booked very full dance cards for us: two days of back-to- back lodging tours (any that signed up), speed dating style. Conclusion: there are great places to stay to suit anybody’s needs and preferences. I included some that we did not see.
This year, I added Beauport Hotel — which can handle a 400 person conference capacity!
Other news this year: Vista Motel has a new pool; Cape Ann Marina Resort initiated Boatsetter (‘Uber on the water’) and… send in updates and I’ll add it to the post.
Cape Ann SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard ) is right in there by Beauport and Long Beach for visiting guests.

Read on to see the state’s Cultural Facilities Funding (CFF) totaling $221,000 plus Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) totaling $88,200 in Gloucester for 2016. It’s a safe bet that each resident in the City benefits from at least one of these 2016 projects. Along with the categories below and others, make sure and think about next year’s application categories including the new festival grant category that will be due September 2016 for 2017 programming. Driven by the Boston Foundation, MA Advocates for the Arts, Sciences and Humanities (MAASH), the MCC and others after many years, this big pot that funds so many projects was part of legislation passed back in July of 2006. Maybe it will be increased by it’s 10th year anniversary summer 2017? Across the state over the past 9 years, “CFF has awarded grants of $91.9 million to nearly 700 projects across the Commonwealth. Demand for CFF grants continues to outpace supply…The new round includes 68 capital grants totaling $8.9 million and another 23 planning grants totaling just over $400,000. Grants range from $7,000 to $300,000, and must be matched one-to-one from private and/or other public sources.”

goodlinens officially moves into 130 Main Street on June 1, 2016 to begin the fit-out. “We’re looking forward to finishing work by July 1 for a soft opening!” says goodlinens owner Jo Anne Chirico.
Apparently setting up a new brick-and-mortar headquarters downtown isn’t ambitious enough. While Jo Anne is focused on building out her new space, ripping down the ceiling and tearing up a glued down rug, goodlinens is rolling out across the country with the goodlinens Better Towels Across Americacampaign. Anna Chirico, Jo Anne’s daughter, is driving through 48 states with goodlinens towels, gathering fans and stores state-by-state, lining them up for linen.
Anna says: “Just left Savannah today and headed to Jacksonville, down the A1A highway, camping, and on to Key West tomorrow, then Miami, Tampa, Destin Beach and New Orleans. The route was planned for the most part before I left. I’ll be going to all 48 states (as well as the southern, northern, western and eastern most part, and the geographical center.) I’ll also be dipping into Canada a few times…It may change a bit, here and there. No particular highway/route.”
We can track Anna’s goodlinens progress as she scouts buyers, lifestyle stores, and boutiques. This local small business is putting up the flag for Gloucester on this road trip the minute they give their address.
