Yesterday, as I was doing some framing in the gallery, I saw a great picture across the street. I went outside with my rollator and yelled: “Hey skeleton dog!” Jen Greeke of Gloucester and her dog Mona crossed the street and we took a photo. Jen has started her own fashion design company: harpyfashion.com. Sometimes it only takes one look, and I know there’s a good photo to be captured.

Block Party, September 20, the Best One!

The last Block Party of 2014 will be held on Saturday, September 20th. This event will be bigger and different than previous ones. Starting at 6 pm, the retailers and restaurants will be featuring their fare on Main Street and inside their establishments. A new feature will be "Little Italy," with music, cheese making, and specialty Italian food, courtesy of Gallo Productions of Gloucester. This is a first – so don't miss it. I'll be in my gallery until 9 pm or later. After all, I'm the appointed Party King. Hope to see you!

Cancer: Check. Appendix? Bye Bye!

I haven't posted lately because I wasn't feeling well, and my cancer treatment changed from hormone therapy to chemotherapy. I was progressively weakening, losing much of the strength I had recovered in physical therapy. I visited the ER at Addison Gilbert Hospital, was tested, and informed by Dr. Berger that it wasn't only the cancer – it was my diseased appendix, that was affecting me. Three hours later, Dr. Kacoyanis of Beverly Hospital surgically removed the offending organ. I'm regaining strength quickly here in Beverly, and feel much better. Although I won't be able to open my gallery for the wonderful Block Party July 19th, I hope you'll celebrate on our Main Street for me, and I'll see you there soon! Fred

Gloucester Community Development / Metropolitan Planning Area Council

Hey Joey,

Back in March, the City of Gloucester’s Community Development partnered with the Metropolitan Planning Area Council (MAPC) to host the first in a series of 3 discussions about Gloucester’s railroad station and the surrounding area.  As a reminder, these interactive meetings have an extra special focus on the Railroad and Maplewood Avenue and train station area. Our input will inform the process, and there’s funding lined up.

Residents, commuters, bikers, pedestrian walking—what do you think?

Please come for some preliminary findings and recommendations at the second meeting THIS COMING MONDAY June 23, 2014, from 6PM-8PM at Kyrouz Auditorium in City Hall.

A cruiseship is coming! A cruiseship is coming! Sunday, May 4, 2014, Holland America will be arriving at Cruiseport

Calling all Main Street, downtown, shops, restaurants, cultural districts, Rocky Neck:

v Open up if you can on Sunday May 4, and maybe at an earlier time (see flyer)

v Print out and hang up a welcome sign that’s being created for this day (coming soon!)

o Gloucester doesn’t need too much help in that department but if you’re needing last minute oomph ideas, search GMG and see what Toodeloos and Pop Gallery and so many others come up with for holidays and block parties!

v Some of downtown is open Sundays anyhow (Island Art & Hobby); it would be good for all of us to know who is open on Sundays

v Passengers won’t be able to visit everywhere, of course. Residents: this might be a fun day to come together to support downtown, your favorite store, restaurant, gallery– and some great people watching!

Gloucester is one port of call. Hundreds of passengers have pre-booked, arranged itineraries– day or ½ day trips that will depart directly from Cruiseport.  Some  passengers remain on board. Many passengers specifically selected disembarking and exploring Gloucester.

Stage Fort Visitor Center will be open. Maritime Gloucester will be open. Cape Ann Museum is closed for renovation. How about you?

A Coffeehouse in Rockport with an Awesome Band!

Yes, this band is indeed awesome. Not that I’m biased or anything. Of course the fact that the band is made up of my brother, niece and two nephews doesn’t influence my love for their music. Not at all, I swear (well…maybe just a bit). But it is true that I really think that anyone who digs roots music will find Daniel Dye & the Miller Road Band’s live show to be just as awesome as I do. They are playing this Thursday, March 13th at the Rockport Community House, with proceeds to benefit the work of Rockport Festivals, the group that puts together the Rockport Farmers Market, HarvestFest and Motif No.1 Day in downtown Rockport.

The Coffeehouse will feature the delicious coffee of Brothers’ Brew and give community members a chance to connect with the folks of Rockport Festivals. Opportunities to sign up to volunteer with the festivals and Farmers Market will be on hand, and we look forward to meeting up with our friends and neighbors and kicking off the spring after a long, cold, snowy winter.

Daniel Dye & the Miller Road Band are making a stop in Rockport on their Northeast mini-tour in support of their new album and feature a mix of original tunes in the style of indie-folk, Americana and roots music, playing everything from the fiddle, cello, viola, harmonica, mandolin, guitar, banjo to the melodica.

Ladies’ Night 2013

It was the traditional Ladies' Night, and they sure came out. Santa even stopped in, and here he is with up and coming painter Laureen Maher and Janet Crary. As the night was winding down, Main Street was enveloped in fog. Fortunately, it didn't rain during Ladies' Night. I drove down a part of the Boulevard, saw groups of people heading home from Downtown, all holding shopping bags. It was a good night. When I got into my car it was 50º. Can't complain about that. Uniformed police were out there, but cutting parkers some slack. Looking to protect the public from those over the limit. Thank you.
