Dramatic Come From Behind Win For Newly Crowned GMG Gloucester Steak Bomb Champ Destinos!!!!

After four rounds it looked like Captain Hooks Had It In The Bag But in the Final Taste Round (accounting for 40% of the scores) Destinos Pulled Out A Dramatic Come From Behind Win.

We had Bex, Chris DeWolfe, Kim Smith and Brianmoc go in for the sub pick-ups last night.  Brought the subs in and weighed and recorded the weights and sequestered the judges in a separate room while we marked each sub Sub A, Sub B, Sub C and Sub D to insure no bias and a blind tasting.

Judges Ed Collard, Chris DeWolfe, Brian O’Connor and Craig Kimberley took their judging duty very seriously.  The one part I would say would not be a fair comparison is Cape Ann brewing based on price since their price includes fries, slaw and a pickle.  However even if you threw the value category out Cape Ann Brewing would have come in last.

Captain Hooks wins People Choice with far and away most number of nominations.

Overall Best Gloucester Steak Bomb Challenge winner Based on Value, Taste, Packaging,  Lack of Sogginess and Equal Distribution of Meat is Destinos.

Once again it was noted by all four judges that each one of these subs was a winner.  To be nominated out of all the incredible sub shops in Gloucester is in itself a testament to how great each one of these Steak Bombs are and Cape Ann Brewing, Captain Hooks, Leonardos and Destinos all deserve accolades

Thanks To Mamie’s Kitchen for providing a neutral stage for judging.  Thanks to our sub picker uppers.  thanks to Kim Smith for filming (look for her awesome video Thursday).

You’d be happy to patronize any of these fine eateries.  Today at Mamie’s Kitchen Chris will be serving up his killer Cheese Steak Sub in honor of yesterday’s competition.

FOR THOSE THAT JUST DON’T KNOW… IT’S DA GREASY POLE!!!!

For youz not in the know, the 2013 Greasy Pole contest starts today at 4:45 at Pavilion Beach (if you don’t know where that is, just listen and follow your ears, fool). The first event took place in 1931, so this is the original “X-GAMES” kids. From all accounts, it appears that it will be high tide, or close to it, on every day for the walkers. If you’ve never experienced this event live, I suggest you do so today, Saturday, and Sunday (the day of Champions). And if you don’t have a friggin’ idea what I’m talking about, watch last years amazing winner Saturday, Nick Avelis, it’s a Ball Busta!  click the gear for HD…(now you know, so get your asses out there!)

Owe…FREE JOEY C!!

Craig’s Too Much Fun BDay

There is something weird going on with the playback of this video. If you take the playhead and manually slide it to the beginning, the video will play more smoothly.

Thank You!

Thank you with all my heart to everyone who attended my film premiere last night. I feel so very blessed to have had my beautiful community of friends and family there, and by attending, you all made the event a great success and sellout!!! What a whirlwind, and it went by all much, much too fast. I hope I didn’t miss saying thank you to anyone last night.

With love and gratitude to my wonderful team. I could not have done it without you!

Tom Hauck ~ Although I began shooting my film “script-less,” I did, through the course of filming, write the story. I know I can always go to Tom for editing assistance, commentary, and proofreading and find his advice and knowledge of the written word invaluable. Life Story of the Black Swallowtail stems from a profound desire to communicate about the natural world found in our own backyards and that can only be achieved when rooted in a beautiful story.

Liv and Kathleen ~ From the moment I asked Kathleen and Liv to help with the music for my film they were there, giving 100 percent of themselves. Thank you Liv for sharing your beautiful voice and Kathleen for your beautiful organ playing. Thank you both especially for the improvisations, which so gorgeously melded with scenes of the butterfly during metamorphosis. And thank you Liv for simply being the best and most supportive and loving daughter a mom a could ever dream of and hope for.

Craig Kimberley ~ To my friend Craig for his editing assistance, and especially for his stunning key frames (the swan in flight!), help with title design, and overall advice on the film as a whole. And special thanks to Hannah for sharing Craig on his days off!

Joey ~ My friend Joey for his tireless support of everything great and good about Gloucester, for the weeklong “sticky,” and for writing, “Butterflies FTW!” I love being part of his GMG team, for more reasons than I can count.

Andrew Love ~ Thanks and appreciation to Andrew, who really saved the day in the eleventh hour, despite the fact that he was in the midst of leaving Cape Ann TV and beginning his new job at Newburyport’s cable channel PortMedia!

Lisa Smith, Cape Ann TV Producer ~ To Lisa for her continued advice, support, and friendship, and assistance, too, in the eleventh hour (and for the wonderful bottle of champagne last night!).

Rob Newton ~ Thank you Rob for inviting me to have my premiere at your very special venue—and didn’t that gentleman fall off his seat at just the right moment! Link to CACC Indie Gogo fundraiser so Rob can continue to support up and coming filmmakers like myself.

Fred Bodin ~ For hosting, once again, a wonderful party at Bodin Historic Photo Gallery. Fred just has the magic touch—his gallery is always warm and welcoming and everyone always feels entirely at ease and has a fabulous time at his parties. Special thanks to John McElhenny for staying late and helping clean up.

Felicia, Pat, and Barry ~ Despite the fact that Felicia is in the final stages of writing her cookbook and preparing for her Kickstarter launch she, Barry, and Pat provided the wonderful array of food served at Fred’s last night.

JoeAnn Hart and Gordon for sharing their breathtakingly beautiful great drift of asters (mecca to the pollinators), of which we will see much more of in my Monarch film!

Donna and Rick and Ann and Bob Kennedy ~ Thank you for the beautiful flowers. I am very touched by your thoughtfulness. Ann, the flowers were you in absentia!

And special thanks to Kate at Wolf Hill for providing our “special guest star” Black Swallowtail caterpillar for the premiere. This is the second time a caterpillar has been found on a parsley plant at Wolf Hill and that Kate has offered it to me to raise.

Update on the caterpillar: Last night Kate’s caterpillar spun its silk girdle and it is going to pupate at any moment!

Again, my thanks and love to you all! And the butterflies thank you, too!!!

The Results Of The Good Morning Gloucester Italian Sub Challenge

I decided to end the nomination period early so we could perhaps catch the nominated sub shop/bakeries off guard.  There was 4 nominees clearly in the lead at the time of the tally.

Our judges Craig Kimberley, Ed Collard, Toby Pett and Erik Lorden each individually placed their orders for a large Italian sub with oil and seasoning at the respective sub shop/bakeries.  Again, wanting to perhaps throw off the nominated sub shops/bakeries that may have been on the lookout for a sub order for a “Large Italian Sub with everything on it”.

I assigned a point system that heavily favored taste (totally subjective) and value cost per pound (totally non-subjective) with 40 possible points awarded in each of those two categories.

Remaining was 20 possible points for equal distribution of meat and condiments.  5 points for the least equally distributed meat and condiments 20 points for the sub with the most equally distributed meat and condiments.

The scoring went as follows-

Cost per pound

Sclafanis $6.09 per lb- 40 points

Virgilios $7.14 per lb 34 points

Destinos $7.16 per lb 34 points

Jeff’s Variety $7.44 per lb 32 points

Taste 1-40 possible points

average of all 4 judges-

Sclafanis 33 points

Virgilios 21.25 points

Destinos 26.25 points

Jeff’s Variety 25.75 points

Equal Distribution of Meat

5-10-15-20 least Equally distributes to most equally distributed

Sclafanis- 10

Virgilios- 15

Destinos- 5

Jeff’s Variety-20

Total of Scores Combined for Your Winner

SCLAFANIS 83

JEFF’S VARIETY 77.75

VIRGILIO’S 70.25

DESTINO’S 65.25

Again I’d like to thank the four judges- Ed Collard, Toby Pett, Craig Kimberley and Erik Lorden. Thanks to Kim Smith and Craig Kimberley for taking photos.

I’d also like to reinforce that there’s no shame in coming in 4th.

It’s true what they say, just like the Oscars, just to tally the number of votes to be nominated makes you a formidable joint to get a sub in the first place.  No losers all winners in my book.  I wouldn’t hesitate to order a sub from any of these places as well as many other sub shops in GTown that didn’t get nominated.

We’re crazy lucky that way, spoiled with great eateries in Gloucester.

Yesterday afternoon I popped over to Felicia’s to find her and her fantastic team getting ready to launch Felicia’s Kickstarter program for her first cookbook. Craig Kimberley was shooting Felicia’s Kickstarter video and there was a mountain of food styled by Craig and Felicia, with Pat and Hannah providing assistance. Craig has created many cooking shows and he knew exactly how he wanted to film Felicia’s wonderful cooking demonstrations. It was lots of fun watching the two of them working at what they both love to do–Felicia cooking and Craig directing and shooting–and I was so glad to have had my camera with!
