Oracle Rubber Duck Says: Winter of Our Discontent is Over!

It’s March! What’s so awesome about March Rubber Duck? It’s followed by April! And April is when we start making “Seasonal Openings 2015!” From Top Dog usually the last day of March to The Rudder right around Tax Day with Lobsta Land, Capt Carlos, Dairy Train, sprinkled in between. What tastes like spring more than a Fish and Cheese sandwich at The Cupboard? And the snow will melt soon! Look at WeatherSpark for next week:

This next week spends most of the time above that nasty freezing line.
This next week spends most of the time above that nasty freezing line.

So here is my lineup starting today for things to do to get you in the mood.
Friday March 6: Stones Pub for a Blue Duck Spring Burger. (Blue Cheese Portabella mushrooms, bacon, hold the sprouts between your knees.
Saturday March 7: Wash the car at Maplewood Carwash. It’s not for the car, it’s for you. You will feel better! Drive home slowly. Do not splash.
Saturday March 7: There is something else big today, what is it?
Sunday March 8: Spring Forward! That’s right, drive home from work and the sun is still shining!
Monday March 9: Big Apple announcement. Buy a watch? A retina MacBook Air?
Tuesday March 10: If you are going to grow tomatoes from seeds, sow them now!
Wed March 11: Run around in shorts! It’s 44 degrees out! After this winter that will feel like 85!

Thurs March 12: Have you ever seen Uranus? I have never seen Uranus! But you can this week. As Mars and Venus set in the evening if you scope them out with binoculars they will be very easy to find. Venus is wicked bright. Very close by will be an unblinking tiny blue dot. That is Uranus! Now you can say Rubber Duck showed you Uranus!

Saturday March 14: Pi Day! Biggest Pi Day ever because it is 2015 which means 3/14/15 9:26AM and 53 seconds all nerds head’s will explode with nerdiness!
Sunday March 15: Ides of March: Greg Bover posts an awesome quote from Caesar or Brutus et tu?
Tuesday March 17: Saint Patrick’s Day! Plant your peas! Still two feet of snow in your garden? Start digging. You have to plant them on Saint Patty’s Day or the world will end.
Wednesday March 18: EJ and Brenda Malloy and Jeff Amero and everyone else who has been rubbing it in on Facebook that they are in Florida will be dragging their sun tanned butts back to Cape Ann!
Tuesday March 31: Get your boat in the water by today and you win a prize!

Friday, March 20: at 6:45 PM EDT First Day of Spring, Equinox, equal day, equal night!

Wednesday April 1: Seasonal Openings really get underway. You can make it. Meet me at the Rudder or The Studio, who is going to open first?

Then this happens Sunday April 5th
Then this happens Sunday April 5th

Have you figured out what to do for Father’s Day? (It’s Sunday)

Ok here are some great ideas:

  1. Stuff the kids in the car and take a Sunday drive to Latitude43 for their Classic Car Meet and Honky Tonk BBQ.  They are having pulled pork in the smoker and smokin’ hot Johnny Carwash beating out classic 60’s surf songs and rockabilly.
  2. Linda Amero Trio at Captain Carlo’s
  3. Brunch at Alchemy with Flynn Cohen & Friends
  4. Brunch at Seaward Inn with Julie Dougherty

That’s 4 ideas from 11am – 3pm.  10 more choices after 3pm and 14 choices TODAY (Sat)! Check out the full list here.

Get out and enjoy family, friends, and some great music on Cape Ann.

“Big fun this thursday as we welcome back slumlord and guitar gunslinger Mr. Billy Loosigian, the scourge of N.H. stripmalls. Y’all remember Billy, or is it Buffalo Bilious, the famous juggler of hot blues lix, ancient rock’n’roll samples and general musical magician, courtesy of Willie Alexander’s Ragtime Band. Billy is one of the most sought-after call guys on the Boston circuit, and we got ‘im, and we’re gonna  blow a fuse. Wear rubber gloves. And, oh, by the way, girls, he’s single! and not even remotely gay! And lives out of town! Get in line! I’m sellin’ tickets!
Blacking him up will be our own Frosty The Snowman, Mr. Forrest Padgett, on Drummbulators, the nicest guy I’ve ever known, and of, course, Greg T. on catarrh, and myselph, on base. We’re gonna romp and stomp till midnite. Honk and sneeze till daylite. You come, too.”

From Dave Sag – Thursday Night Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line

This Thursday at the Rumline we  have Mr’ Steve Sadler, he of the searing guitar and monotone joke delivery. Steve’s an old pal of ours from the old days and we’re always glad to see him. You may remember the Barking Sharks, Steve’s last band around these parts before  he took off to see the world. And now he’s back!
Backing him up will be Mr. Greg Dann, drumnist for Secret Cervix and all around nice guy, and, of course, Greg T. and myself. An enjoyable nite!

And don’t forget: all you under-employed folks with time to spare, c’mon  down to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday for some swingin’ jazz and dixieland courtesy of the ol’ Salty Jazz Band. I’ll be there. Blast off is at 1 Pm

From Dave Sag-

And Friday:  The Geezers will be limping back into Elliot’s at the Blackburn for yet another grueling experiment in physics.Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks, Greg Tower and myself will be attempting cold fusion of the blues. With any luck, by the end of the night there will be nothing left on stage but a steaming heap. Come find out!

And Sunday, I’ll be up at Glenn’s Cool Bar and Restaurant in Nbpt. From 6 to 9 p.m. playing with this groovy band consisting of my buddies Justin Quinn, on vocals and harp, and his entire aggravation including Jon Ross on gooeytar, Per Hanson, the scariest drummer I’ve ever played with, and Curtis “Lemay” Haines, the Mayor of Nbpt. and a fine stride pianist. Make reservations now! The food is great and the band ain’t too shabby!
Don’t be a cube, Rube; go ape! Live music is best!

Friday August 21

Music at the Cape Ann Museum on Fridays at Noon

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present free noontime concerts in the Museum’s Sculpture Garden on Fridays during the month of August. Performers for the remainder of the month will be James White on August 21 and The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra on August 28.

The Pleasant Street Tea Company and Lark Fine Foods have generously donated beverages and cookies for these events. In the event of rain, the performances will take place inside the Museum.

James White, now a resident of Gloucester, is originally from England. He has been writing music since the 1970s, playing and performing in both Europe and New England as well as doing session work with his first instrument, the electric violin.

The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra is based in London, England. The orchestra specializes in the type of light classical music from the late nineteenth, early twentieth century that is usually referred to as Palm Court Music or Salon Music. The ensemble consists of a string quartet, piano, flute and oboe.

Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. For more information please call: (978) 283-0455. Additional information can be found online at http://www.capeannmuseum.org.

Exit 11 Rocked Capt. Carlo’s! GMG’s own Mike Lindberg!

Cap2973_1050963476453_1296722091_30118015_7587652_nt. Carlo’s was packed last night. The band, Exit 11, rocked the house. The guys hadn’t played together for a couple of years, but you’d never know it. Frank Gentile, Jim Frontiero, Mike Lindberg, Pete Malaquias each on instruments and doing vocals had the place dancing and singing along.Their accapellas were incredible. Familiar songs done uniquely their way.

To Mike and all the guys- Thanks for sharing the music and fun! Looking forward to the JJ benefit on Thursday June 25.

GGAP III Thank You

To those of you who saw yesterday’s presentations, a big thank you!

Rob Newton’s slideshow of his grandfather’s old postcards was beautifully set to music. My interview with Karen McCormack was highlighted by her dad’s arrival from Arizona just in time to see himself on the big screen. Mike Lindberg’s video of “Gloucester til the End” brought tears to everyone’s eyes. He commented that there would be a remake of the song and video when the band performs for the JJ Nicastro benefit at Capt. Carlo’s on June 25. Jay Albert included some interesting computer-generated music with his slideshow of gorgeous Gloucester photos including a shot of a tornado at last year’s Fiesta. And the show was wrapped up by the Bait and Tackle crew Tom Papows, Michael Pallazola, & Emile Doucette who will be traveling to Toronto for a film competition in May where they have been selected as one of 14 finalists for their Greasy Pole video.

Although it was a beautiful day, we are grateful for those who came to support the emerging talent of Gloucester Guerilla Art Project artists. Missed you, Joey!

It is Jeff Worthley!

jeff-w

You all got the right answer, so I guess I’ll have to make it more difficult next time! This was  “Rock The Vote” at Capt. Carlo’s in Nov. of 2005. Jeff was bangin’ on the keys, and that’s  Mike Chipperini on the harp in the background. Nice shirt, Jeff!
