The Boston Derby Dames, Massachusetts only WFTDA sanctioned flat track roller derby team, announces details of their 2012 season schedule this month, with all games to be played at their home base of Shriners Auditorium, Wilmington, MA.

In this their 7th year, BDD has more than 65 skaters on five teams: the Cosmonaughties, Nutcrackers and Wicked Pissahs; a B level team aptly called the Boston B Party and the all-star travel team, the Boston Massacre. As founding member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (wftda.com), BDD has worked to build and represent the sport on an international level.

As the 2012 national season begins, the Boston Massacre is ranked 7th in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s Eastern Region (wftda.com/rankings). Plus, Derby News Network Power Rankings put Boston in the number 20 spot overall in the country (derbynewsnetwork.com).

Our 2012 season (March–October) is poised to be another heated season with the home teams vying for supremacy—  the four-time champs Wicked Pissahs try to hold on to the Championship Fez Cup from the graceful grip of second-place finishers and 2010 champions the Nutcrackers, while the Cosmonaughties battle for their first-ever trophy.

The Boston Massacre has experienced major transition in players, losing several to retirement but gaining a track full of fresh young blood anxious to prove their mettle in this season’s tough schedule. Training harder than ever before, the Massacre are up to facing a challenging season as they welcome Pennsylvania’s Dutchland, Indy’s Naptown, Cincinnati’s Black Sheep, Maine’s Port Authorities and the ever-popular Montreal New Skids on the Block.

Hoping to make the 2012 WFTDA Championships in Atlanta this fall, a feat they accomplished in 2008, this may be a break out year for Boston’s all-star team as the sport continues to grow in athleticism and its fan base continues to broaden.

Our season opening games in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 broke attendance records. Last year’s 2011 opener sold out and once again left a line of anxious fans buying tickets for the next bout in advance, plus, BDD sold out the first four games of the 2011 season. For 2012, the injection of fresh meat blood combined with the inspiration of dedicated vets promises a season like none other.

The CBS Boston Most Valuable Blogger Everything Else Category Rant

As many of you know (and I swear I don’t want to be obnoxiously asking for your votes every two seconds) Good Morning Gloucester, our blog is among the 30 or so nominees for Boston’s Most Valuable Blogger in the Everything Else category.

It’s a great honor and it’s all because of our contributors and community who send in material as well as comment on posts and/or help out with the latest foolish plans we may be concocting to dominate the world.

I don’t want this to come off as a plea for votes but I just now had the time to click through the other nominees on the list and out of the 30 or so, there really IMO are only about 5 that belong there.  I’m not even saying GMG deserves the top spot (although in my mind it does) but I could see how someone could vote for Adam Gaffin’s excellent and oft updated Universal Hub

What I cannot understand is how there are some nominees in the category that hardly ever even update or may only update once a week.  There are some nominees that have a total of three blog posts for the whole month of August.  We bang that out by 8AM on any given day.  So if you have time and see some of the other nominees even in the same category that we are nominated in, look through and at least vote for some blog that cares enough to maintain the thing.

I would tell you that there are some local Cape Ann blogs that I would put up over at least 60% of the nominees in the contest.

Anyway I truly am appreciative to whoever nominated us in the first place and I hope that if we don’t win that someone that puts in the time and energy that we do, does win.

Thanks for your support…end rant

The Great New England Hurricane, Boston, 1938

image

The Great New England Hurricane of September 1938 killed 600 to 800 people, damaged or destroyed 57,000 homes, took out 26,000 automobiles, and felled 2 billion trees. It was the first major hurricane to hit New England since 1869. In New York City, the East River surged three blocks inland. This photo was taken on Boston Common where the Ducklings sculpture is now.

Heather Atwood’s Visit With Chef Jose Duarte in Boston’s North End Video

Check Out The Video At The Gloucester Times Website By Clicking The Picture-image

Heather Atwood shot a video recently with Chef Jose Duarte of Taranta in Boston’s North End

Jose Duarte is becoming very well known for two reasons, his unique combination of Peruvian and Italian dishes and his absolute dedication to operating a sustainable restaurant. In this video Jose shows Heather how to make  a scallop ceviche Peruvian style, called "Tiradito, a ceviche-like treatment of fish cut like sashimi, evidence of the wave of Japanese farm workers who arrived in Peru in the late 19th century." The food is too spectacular not to be recognized.  Zagat named it one of the best new restaurants of the Decade.  Boston Magazine named it one of the top 50 Restaurants in Boston.  The Massachusetts Restaurant Association has just named Jose Duarte “Chef of the Year.”

Off on a Great Adventure!

emailschooner4 copy [640x480]

This morning I’m taking off on the Spirit of Massachusetts for an overnight trip into Boston to view the Tall Ships. I’m as excited as a little kid. This has been a dream I’ve had forever- to sail on a schooner and be part of the daily activities that happen on board.

I will try to post from the boat or at least have Joey post for me. Of course I’ll be shooting like crazy and I might be able to upload the photos to Joey!

It will be my 60th year adventure! See you when we get back tomorrow!

Over the Bridge- Boston Day Trip Slideshow

I spent yesterday in Boston with Grandkid #1. A beautiful day! Walked the Commons, shopped, met up with a friend who took us to dinner at Tremont 647. Great company, fun day.

On Boylston we bumped into a motley group of bicyclists. We found out that this was a Critical Mass ride which  is a bicycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the city was to bicyclists. Click on this photo to find out more about Critical Mass.picture-162
