The Boston Derby Dames, Massachusetts only WFTDA sanctioned flat track roller derby team, announces details of their 2012 season schedule this month, with all games to be played at their home base of Shriners Auditorium, Wilmington, MA.

In this their 7th year, BDD has more than 65 skaters on five teams: the Cosmonaughties, Nutcrackers and Wicked Pissahs; a B level team aptly called the Boston B Party and the all-star travel team, the Boston Massacre. As founding member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (wftda.com), BDD has worked to build and represent the sport on an international level.

As the 2012 national season begins, the Boston Massacre is ranked 7th in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s Eastern Region (wftda.com/rankings). Plus, Derby News Network Power Rankings put Boston in the number 20 spot overall in the country (derbynewsnetwork.com).

Our 2012 season (March–October) is poised to be another heated season with the home teams vying for supremacy—  the four-time champs Wicked Pissahs try to hold on to the Championship Fez Cup from the graceful grip of second-place finishers and 2010 champions the Nutcrackers, while the Cosmonaughties battle for their first-ever trophy.

The Boston Massacre has experienced major transition in players, losing several to retirement but gaining a track full of fresh young blood anxious to prove their mettle in this season’s tough schedule. Training harder than ever before, the Massacre are up to facing a challenging season as they welcome Pennsylvania’s Dutchland, Indy’s Naptown, Cincinnati’s Black Sheep, Maine’s Port Authorities and the ever-popular Montreal New Skids on the Block.

Hoping to make the 2012 WFTDA Championships in Atlanta this fall, a feat they accomplished in 2008, this may be a break out year for Boston’s all-star team as the sport continues to grow in athleticism and its fan base continues to broaden.

Our season opening games in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 broke attendance records. Last year’s 2011 opener sold out and once again left a line of anxious fans buying tickets for the next bout in advance, plus, BDD sold out the first four games of the 2011 season. For 2012, the injection of fresh meat blood combined with the inspiration of dedicated vets promises a season like none other.

2010 Season Opener was SOLD OUT with over 1,600 fans! With a season full of double-headers, we expect the same turnout for March.
Bout #1: Sees the Wicked Pissahs take on Season Three Champs the Nutcrackers. Fresh off 100-point victory over the Cosmonaughties, The Pissahs are hoping for a repeat. Will 2010 be another Year of the Nut, or can the two-time champion Pissahs bring back the championship … fo’ life?

Bout #2:The evening continues with an exciting rematch. The Boston vs. Carolina rivalry is so fierce, it was a nominee for best rivalry in Derby News Network’s Best of 2009 Reader Poll. With Carolina defeating Boston in two consecutive heartbreakers, Boston was able to avenge those losses with a crushing defeat at the 2009 WFTDA Eastern Regionals. Without a trip to Nationals, Carolina is well-rested and ready for revenge.

Half time show features live music and as always, the after party dance floor is open to all, with DJ John Barera spinning until midnight.

The Boston Derby Dames are Boston’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned and operated flat track roller derby league and proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

Three Sheets to the Wind

The Schooner Adventure organization spawned Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Adventure crew members who are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.

Rick Drost

Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge MA where he started playing with the folk-rock group Parts and Labor.  He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes, and has enjoyed stints with great instructors and students at Song School in Colorado , SAMW and other workshops.

Rick Berlin

Rick Berlin sings honest narrative (sometimes funny) songs from the torn pocket of the heart; his style has been compared to Waits, Weil, and Newman. Rick’s impressive past credits in the Boston music scene include Orchestra Luna/Luna, Berlin Airlift, Rick Berlin–The Movie, Rome is Burning, Rick Berlin–The Awful Truth, and The Shelley Winters Project. He was a regular at Jacques in Boston ’s Bay Village for nine years, and now appears frequently at the Lizard Lounge, among many other places.

Chris Brokaw & Geoff Farina

Chris Brokaw & Geoff Farina, both well known in the indie rock scene, will play pre-World War II country blues songs on acoustic guitars and vocals, including such favorites as Stagger Lee and Trouble in Mind.

Geoff Farina

In 1998, Geoff and his bandmate, Jodi Buonanno, purchased and renovated the Narragansett Grange Hall, a historic public building that would otherwise have been demolished.  With the aid of a HUD program they made the building into music and painting studios and living space, and for seven years provided living and studio space to annual artists in residence. Geoff will talk about his experiences developing the project.

Boston Derby Dames

A group of Boston Derby Dames, Boston ’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned and -operated flat track roller derby league, will make a swift but no-doubt high impact appearance on Rocky Neck Avenue.

Additionally, Sigrid Olsen & Kathleen Archer invite you to a cocktail party at their galleries, ISLA Beach House and Painted Bird, at 77 Rocky Neck Avenue.
