Pure Pastry is Pure Perfection

Last week a co-worker arrived in the office with an amazing assortment of gorgeous treats from Pure Pastry in Beverly to share with the faculty and staff.

While delicious almost doesn’t do them justice, let’s back up a bit for a second to the presentation. I’m all about packaging….all about nice little touches…all about made with care. Kim Gregory goes over the top, in a very sustainable, green, and organic way, to make receiving her pastries feel like opening a gift.  And, a gift they are!  While almost impossible to choose….the two selections that I made were to die for. Truly, perfectly, delicious.

I look forward to finding a reason to order…or maybe even ordering for no real reason at all.

Here’s a bit about what Pure Pastry Stands for…

WORLD WAR II BOMBERS OVER GLOUCESTER

On Saturday you may have heard the rumble of engines in the sky over Gloucester and looked up to see an astonishing sight: a vintage World War Two bomber or fighter plane cruising overhead. The planes are owned by the Collings Foundation in Stow, MA, and every year as part of the “Wings of Freedom” tour they fly into Beverly Airport for a weekend. The tour, which includes a B-17G Flying Fortress bomber, B-24J Liberator bomber, B-25 Mitchell bomber, and a P-51 Mustang, will be at the airport on Sunday from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm. You can even pay to ride in one as they cruise from Beverly to Gloucester and back. For more information, visit the Collings Foundation.

Have You Been to the Barrel House?

So good.

The Barrel House is on Cabot Street in Beverly…and totally worth the trip.  I’ve been a couple of times, but keep forgetting to write about it.  But, after having gone back last Friday afternoon, there was no way I was going to forget again.

First of all, the ambience is my kind of perfect.  Dark, lots of brick, leather, an amazing tin ceiling, reclaimed wood…all gorgeous.

Secondly, any place that serves oysters and Almond Butter Brie Fondue is right in my world.

Third, the bar can’t be beat and my Moscow Mule was super yummy.

We had some oysters, the Mac & Cheese (smoked gouda, fontina, pecorino, herbed panko crust), the Brie Fondue, and….because why not….the Fried Dough Wrapped “Twinky” ….complete with chocolate hazelnut sauce and ice cream.

There’s A New Rotary in My Life

Not sure if it is temporary or permanent but there’s officially another rotary in my life.  This one near the school where I teach in Beverly.

Happily (I think) it is there due to the clearing and construction of the new Whole Foods due to open later this year.

In case you were not aware that Beverly is indeed getting a Whole Foods you can read more about it by following the link below.

WHOLE FOODS MARKET PLANS BEVERLY, MASS., LOCATION

Whole Foods Market will open a location at 140 Brimbal Avenue in Beverly, Mass.

The store, which will be part of the North Shore Commons Shopping Center, will be approximately 35,000 square feet and will employ approximately 150 team members.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to open another Whole Foods Market location in the metro North area,” said Laura Derba, president of Whole Foods Market’s North Atlantic Region. “Beverly is a great community, and we are eager to open and to become partners with our new neighbors.”

The store is projected to open in 2016.

Badfinger featuring Joey Molland * Opener: Brooks Young Band * Saturday 8:00pm @ The Larcom Theatre. Beverly, Ma.

Badfinger

Tickets Available @ gimmelive.com
British Invasion rock stars, Badfinger, kick off GIMMELIVE’s highly anticipated third season at Beverly’s fully-restored, historic Larcom Theatre, performing ONE NIGHT ONLY. Hand picked by The Beatles, Badfinger was the first group signed to the Beatles’ label, Apple Records and their first #1 hit “Come And Get It” was written by Paul McCartney!

George Harrison and Paul McCartney produced a string of world-wide Badfinger hits, including “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” “Without You” and “Baby Blue”, which hit the charts again in 2013 on the Breaking Bad soundtrack.

Still led by founder Joey Molland, who performed on George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” album and John Lennon’s “Imagine” album, Badfinger’s high energy concerts continue to thrill audiences world-wide.

Don’t miss Badfinger’s only Boston area stop on their U.S. Tour at Beverly’s intimate, acoustically spectacular Larcom Theatre.

Brooks Young Band will open the show. Hailing from Salem, MA, Brooks Young Band saturate their songs with rock and roll edge and blues feel, going for a direct, emotional and powerful sonic blend.
Brooks’ searing guitar leads and soulful vocal performances lock in perfectly with the solid rhythm section, creating an inspirational and uplifting sonic texture along the lines of influential performers such as Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews.
The Brooks Young Band has toured extensively throughout New England, sharing the stage with icons such as B.B. King, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, The Wallflowers, and Boyd Tinsley of Dave Matthews Band. They have also had the privilege of performing for Vice President Joe Biden.

Gloucester Smiles ~ 04

An Atlanta smile now in Gloucester, a bright smile from a visitor from Beverly who I believe was featured in yesterday’s post by Marty Luster “Another Fine Day on The Boulevard”, a dog stealing a Kiss, and Buoni Amici (Good Friends)

GHS Boys Hoop vs Beverly

GHS Boys Hoop runs away from Beverly in last quarter for big win.

Let’s see how our neighbor throws a Block Party

Last month Beverly tried their hand at throwing a block party and it was very well attended.  So they’re doing it again this Saturday from 5:30-9:30pm.  And they’ve got BARRENCE WHITFIELD leading off the music at 5:30.  Now that’ll be a rockin’ block party.  Just in case you’re not sure what I’m talking about check this out:

Here’s a video of the first Beverly Block Party.  It’s nice to see our neighbor picking up on our success!

So I went to this new joint in Beverly…

I don’t mind paying up for great food but the one thing that I will not endorse is paying up for good food but leaving hungry.

When you offer up a pasta dish for $22 and then serve barely 6 ounces of pasta I have a problem.  That’s $22 without salad, just the pasta dish.  Pasta- as in wheat flour and eggs.

I won’t be back.

I coulda ate a feast at Sista Felicia’s or gone to La Trattoria for better food at a lot less or my favorite Italian restaurant of all time- Vinny’s Superette in Somerville for half the dough and a hundred times better food.

Screw that place.  Never going back.

(our dining companions were great though)

Family Promise North Shore’s new Family Day Center is open in Beverly!

As promised yesterday, here’s a slideshow of the opening ceremony and the Beverly facility itself. As is clear from the photos, there was a pretty good turnout for the event, including Mayor Bill Scanlon, who cut the ribbon together with Family Promise North Shore‘s Network Manager, Gloucester native Elise Sinagra.

It’s great that we have this new initiative (following a nation-wide model) to help families who are homeless by offering a day center where kids and parents can spend time in a safe, sheltered environment, or where the they can have a stable temporary address for school bus pickups, job applications, etc. Several Gloucester churches are involved in the program in one way or another, either as an institution or through the volunteer efforts of their members. But help and donations are still needed!

The moment of the ribbon cutting (yesterday’s photo was 1 second before…)

Family Promise North Shore opening ceremony

Beverly Mayor Bill Scanlon was at the newly established center for Family Promise North Shore to cut the ribbon together with FPNS’s Network Director, Elise Sinagra, yesterday evening:

Family Promise North Shore serves homeless families with children, providing a day shelter with all the essentials, and overnight sleeping quarters in conjunction with houses of worship in the region.  Family Promise is a national model for helping homeless families live with dignity and find permanent housing solutions.

I will have a slideshow of the event and the facility tomorrow.
