And the build-out continues!

Just wanted to update everyone that we had a great day on Monday at Art Haven’s new space, finishing building out some walls, getting the art materials thrift store cleaned out, and Sal Russo coming through HUGE by finishing repointing the back wall of our function room!

Here’s the awesome crew from Chris Fogarty Carpentry who generously volunteered their time to put up most of the walls in the space:

And the RAYS kids helping to get the thrift store ready!

And even a couple of the TAG kids stopping by to check out the awesome new space they’ll get to use! (Can you tell their excited?)

Great volunteers on Saturday!

Just wanted to thank the tremendous group of volunteer contractors that came and helped to start putting walls up at 11 Pleasant Street with us on Saturday! Check out the slideshow to see pictures of Kevin Hansery, Ron Nilsson, Aaron Noble, Tad Cunningham, and Patti Seitz doing some tremendous work. Interior walls up and ready for plumbing!

Pleasant Street is going to be awesome!!

I was just walking down Pleasant Street this morning and realizing how AWESOME it’s going to be once all the work that’s currently happening there is finished. Just think about it! Between the Johnstone & Schlichte building being re-done, the great new entrance and windows on Pleasant Street Tea Co. and, my [extremely biased] personal favorite, the old office supply store becoming an incredibly creative community space, Pleasant Street is really gonna be rockin! Some photos of the works in progress for your enjoyment:

Anybody excited to see somethin happenin in the old office supply store?

You may have noticed they’ve been putting new windows in the old office supply building on Pleasant Street over the past couple months, but did anybody notice all the folks in there taking down ceiling tiles this morning??

Well…. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Art Haven signed a lease for the space at 11 Pleasant Street last Friday and is going to be EXPANDING to have high school and adult programming at the new space! Kids from the RAYS program were there this morning starting the first step of development: taking down ceiling tiles. Work is underway, and the planned open date is EARLY MAY with studios for rent, an art materials thrift store, classroom space, and a multi-use room for all kinds of events!

Young Artist of the week!

This young artist of the week is a very talented 14-year-old photographer  named Sarah. Sarah does digital and darkroom photography, and did a great series of graffiti photography last fall for the TAG gallery opening [one pictured below]. Above are some of her photos on display at Nights on the Neck last summer, but you can see more of her work at the TAG gallery at 180B Main St.

If you know of a young artist that should be featured here, email dawn.gadow@gmail.com  with a short description and a photo of some of their work!

Nothing Aja could have done about it…

Aja’s face in the background: “Don’t ask me how they’re hands got like that… Sometimes it just has to be done.”

Caroline and her book

This week’s young artist is Caroline, shown above with her book from Art Haven’s bookmaking workshop this week. Caroline has taken all kinds of art classes in everything from fractal art to summer playcamp, and she can’t wait to be a part of the Teen Artist Guild when she gets a little older. She told me she really likes to take things from around her house and make them beautiful by repainting and redesigning them!

Also, she made one of the prettiest shields on Lord of the Rings Day (not sure if that’s what you should be looking for in a shield, but I think it’s pretty great…)
