Stormy weather blues cured by music tonight and over the wekend

Live music starts at 6 tonight, 11 AM tomorrow & Sunday.  You can’t get to every show so here’s the schedule to help you choose.

Tonight you can catch an unusual lineup of top musical talent in one intimate venue that you don’t see every day: Allen Estes has been quietly assembling a band of all-stars,  including the great David Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes to plug in and rock.   Wait, you might say.  Isn’t Allen Estes, folk, country or americana?  Sometimes.  But when he’s with these guys and their plugged in they ROCK!  And that’s precisely what they’ll do at Minglewood Tavern tonight starting about 9.  Check them out!

Tomorrow, start off at the Blues Fest (weather will clear by morning).  Then take the party to town at any of a dozen venues at night (see here).  Get up Sunday by 11 and check out the Rockport Acoustic Music Fest.

Young, rising star Alexandra Valenti premieres on Local Music Seen tomorrow

Over the past few years, we’ve profiled a number of rising stars from Cape Ann.  Here’s our latest pick for whom to watch: Alexandra Valenti. Her insightful songs and endearing spirit captivate audiences and keep you listening, wanting more.

You can see her live at the Town Hall Stage at 3pm during Manchester’s Festival by the Sea this Saturday.  And you can be introduced to her on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  She sings three wonderfully original songs and speaks candidly — and with wisdom beyond her years — about the songwriting process and music business.  Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

“I’m on a tightrope, balancing myself so I don’t choke on fear.”  You can tell she’s going places if she’s already writing lyrics like that.  You might as well catch this rising star while you can close to home.  It won’t be long before she’s playing big venues far away for a steep ticket price.

Here’s your chance to be in a live studio TV audience without even crossing the bridge

Next Monday 7/29, we’re filming two Local Music Seen with Allen Estes shows for Cape Ann TV at their studio at 38 Blackburn Center (see map).  Filming will begin around 2:30pm.  Allen’s guests will be Joe Thomas & Memory Lane of Giuseppe’s, who hosted the very popular Noise Magazine Singer Songwriter Shuffle.  There will be a break after filming Joe & Memory and then we’ll begin filming a show with very talented, young singer/songwriter Alexandra Valenti as Allen’s Guest.  Here’s Alexandra at the Singer Songwriter Shuffle.

People are welcome to attend as guests.  If you’d like to attend, please be there by 2:30pm. And please be patient as we have to test sound and lights and often we have to move stuff around and mess with various gadgets to get things just right.

If you’d like to be notified, by email, of all future Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tapings (along with other concert info before the public knows) you can join our gimmeLIVE Concert Club here.

Last Minute Block Party Updates – Win Cool Prizes

Here’s a new feature for tomorrow’s (SAT) Downtown Block Party: Win Cool Prizes!
The Block Party’s new Marketplace at the Cape Ann Savings Bank Plaza between Hancock and Porter Streets (see map) has a new game called Glosta-opoly played on a brand new Monopoly-style board created by members of Art Haven.

You can play the game for free and win wicked-cool Prizes including CDs by top local artists including Chelsea Berry, Julie Dougherty, Michael Thomas Doyle, Allen Estes, Tom Hauck, Orleans “Still the One Live”, Renee & Joe, T Max, plus a limited edition Celebrate Gloucester 2010 2 DVD set, limited edition Celebrate Gloucester 2007 Staff T-Shirt, hats & shirts & pens from Gloucester Engineering, jar openers and shot glasses from Ryan and Wood, creations and services from the Teen Artist Guild, gift certificates for From Dust to Dawn Cleaning services from Holly Ciancola and Whitmarsh Lock and Safe, energy bars and candies from Sunny Variety, Mardi Gras beads and glow sticks from Cape Ann Lanes, free car washes from Maplewood Car Wash, gift certificates from downtown merchants and more . . .

Revised Entertainment Schedule
There have been a couple of minor changes to the entertainment — click here for all entertainment by stage.  Click here for all musical entertainment by time.

Don’t sweat the parking.  I’m always surprised when I hear people complain about parking in Gloucester.  Honestly, I’ve never had trouble finding a parking space — not even during Fiesta.  Last night I went to the Harbor Loop Concert.  I got there after it started on a beautiful summer night in the height of the tourist season when every local hotel is full and what do you know?  I found a parking space on Rogers Street at Harbor Loop!  In fact I had my choice of at least half a dozen free (after 6) spots on Rogers within earshot of the music.  Plus there were plenty of spaces at I4-C2.  So don’t worry about the few Main Street parking spots that are not available during the Block Party.  Trust me.  You won’t have a problem finding a space within a couple minutes walk.

It’s time for Joe Wilkins

JoeWilkins
Joe Wilkins on the Local Music Seen set

OK, if you haven’t heard Joe Wilkins, it’s time.  Don’t let his pleasant, unassuming personality fool you.  This guy is a powerhouse talent, whose songs paint vivid pictures in your head, so you might not notice just how good he is on guitar.  You can see him on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  Then bop over to Giuseppe’s and catch him live with Chris Langathianos.

If you miss tomorrow, you can see him with Joe Cardoza on bass and Leo Ciamitaro on drums at Dog Bar for a Fiesta Friday party.  And if you’re in the mood for something more quiet, catch solo him at The Landing on Saturday.  See full live music schedule here.

Listen to this from Local Music Seen:

Watch what happens at 1:16 in this video and you’ll get why he’s a pro.  See more Joe Wilkins videos here.

Come Monday morning, there’s simply no excuse for not knowing who this rising star is.  Before you know it Joe Wilkins will be on tour in Europe or Asia and you’ll have missed your chance to see him in an intimate venue serving good food in your own back yard FOR FREE!

Cape Ann TV Annual Special tonight 10:30 on Channel 12

Last month we told you about Cape Ann TV’s Annual Meeting, which they filmed and it airs as a special tonight at 10:30 p.m. Channel 12.

“Why would I want to watch an annual meeting?” you ask.  Well, this is not your average annual meeting.  It’s fun.  Allen Estes and I were among 4 producers who talked briefly about our experiences and showed clips from our shows (Local Music Seen in our case).  The other producers were Kim Smith who wowed us with clips from her spectacular butterfly movie that premieres Friday at Cape Ann Community Cinema (more on that here); Shaun Goulart, who’s tale of how he came to make his thriller is almost a thrilling as the movie itself; and John Ronan, who has the longest running show on Cape Ann TV and offered us a wonderful surprise in his clips.  Here’s a taste of what you’ll see:

If you miss it tonight, you can catch it again Saturday 6/22 at 5pm and Monday 6/24 at 9pm.

One of the things Allen talked about is how the music scene in Gloucester and Cape Ann is growing.  Proof that he’s right can be witnessed this weekend with over 50 live shows to choose from starting tomorrow.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Nashville rising star on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED)

Last week we posted that Louise Mosrie is back on Cape Ann this Saturday to play at Old Sloop and since her first trip to Cape Ann was to record a special show of Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, we felt it fitting to reprise that show this week.

You can see it tomorrow (WED) at 6:30 pm, Friday at 1:30 pm and Sunday at 6 pm on Cape Ann TV channel 12.

This show will get you psyched to see her live.  Even though her TV performance reaches through the screen and grabs your heart, there’s just no substitute for her live shows.  This one is likely to sell out so get your tickets now -right here.

Allen & Dylan Estes on 104.9 Father’s Day Radio Show SUN @ 9AM

Aurelia Nelson, host of Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 invited Allen Estes and his son, Dylan, for her special Father’s Day show that will air tomorrow, SUNDAY, at 9am.

AureliaDylanAllen

They perform together and talk about the role of music in their lives — and ours.  It’s worth getting up early for.

Then you can see Allen at the Rhumb Line with Orville Giddings at 8pm — a great way to wind up Father’s Day weekend!

Louise Mosrie’s songwriting is riveting; her performance is captivating.  Every song tells a story that touches your heart.  Here’s a great quote about her that sums it up:  “…basically, she’s William Faulkner with a guitar.” – Rich Warren, WFMT-FM Chicago

Last year Louise took time out from her tour to tape Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.  Here’s my favorite song from that show — gave me the chills from the control room.
