Details from Jane Deering Gallery below:

Opening August 9th with a reception from 4-6pm:  ADIN MURRAY | august reverie @ Jane Deering Gallery . 19 Pleasant Street . Gloucester.

“In a 2011 opinion piece on reverie, Rachel Enthoven wrote: โ€˜Born of the desire to be directly involved in our surroundings, reverie strips the world of its utility. It borrows the power of narration from wakefulness and the power of divination from sleep โ€ฆ and blends their realms. โ€ฆ It is contemplationย from within,ย letting the person who gives way to it feel change.โ€™

Artist Adin Murray, known for his direct observations of nature, offers viewers the chance to โ€˜feel change,โ€™ to suspend the perpetual motion of our lives, to loosen thought.

This exhibition, Murrayโ€™s 6th solo show with the gallery, includes eleven small paintings which evoke dreams of nature. Murray notes: Reverie: A state of being pleasantly lost in oneโ€™s thoughts; a daydream. Oxford Languages. And writes: My hope is that somewhere in this collection of work you are able to find yourself in such a state.

Along side the small oil paintings are larger works, each a new exploration of Murrayโ€™s vision.

Adin Murray holds a BA in Art/Biology from Tulane University and an MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His work is in the permanent collection of the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester MA and in corporate and private collections in the US and abroad. Murray lives and maintains a studio in Gloucester, MA.

PULP FICTION | artists’ books opens at Jane Deering Gallery with a Reception on Saturday August 9th from 4-6pm.ย  The gallery is located at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester.ย  Hours:ย  Fri & Sat 1-5pm; Sun 1-4pm and by appointmentย @ 917-902-4359.

Participating artists include: Gail Barker, Linda Ekstrom, Leslie Lyman, Jeffrey Marshall, Rhoda Rosenberg, Louise Strawbridge, and Willie Alexander, featuring a papier mรขchรฉ sculpture by Geoffrey Bayliss, and contributing sculpture by Audrey Goldstein

In essence, the artistโ€™s book is an attempt to unify text and image, giving the images as much prominence as the text. The Yale Library has a wonderful (and lengthy) history of artistsโ€™ books. Link: https://guides.library.yale.edu/c.php?g=295819&p=1972527. Here are excerpts from that text:

The first forerunner to contemporary artists’ books is probably the British artist William Blake, who worked in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Blake was a poet, painter and printmaker. He wanted to integrate his visual and written work.

Often, the first suggestion of the book format combined with the work of a visual artist is credited to France in the 1890’s.

Around the same time period, artists, writers, and political thinkers were publishing pamphlets, posters, and magazines expressing their avant-garde ideas.

The Dada movement (late 1910’s, early 1920’s) in Europe used books as a means of expression, and their “ethical and political concern for the function of art in society” is a precursor to the American idea behind using books as art during the 1960โ€™s.

In the next two decades, artists’ books were influenced by trends in the art world: the prominence of sculpture in the 1970’s and installation art in the 1980’s. [13] Performance and conceptual art were also intertwined with the artists’ books movement. From here to the present, artists’ books have continued to be made and continued to be misunderstood because of their undefinable nature.

Art in August: Adin Murray on now. Geoffrey Bayliss upcoming. Jane Deering Gallery #GloucesterMA

Adin Murray’s sixth show, Intertidal, at Jane Deering Gallery–on view through August 20, 2023–includes a compact and glowing group of landscape preparatory drawings ($1200), oil studies ($2500), and large paintings ($8000-$12,000) focused on coastal wetlands, real and not so real, in settings familiar and still, whether fall or spring, day or night, clear or misty.

Murray hews his moon and horizon motifs inland for this new series. And why not? Murray resides and works on Cape Ann and encounters the stunning Great Salt Marsh at every bend, its constantly changing conditions a natural wonder.

Red dots: collectors have purchased ‘Intertidal’ works across all three media processes.

In the flat files, ask to see a classic new series on paper by Aaron Fink inspired by the vicissitudes of a big melty pop of juicy watermelon and abstraction that serves up a slice of life’s shifting moods. Fink maintains studios in Boston and Rockport.

Upcoming: Geoffrey Bayliss white, and black on white opens August 24, 2023.

Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to present ADIN MURRAY | Intertidal opening with a public reception on Thursday August 3rd from 5-7pm.ย  As in his two previous seriesโ€”Horizon and Moonโ€”Murrayโ€™s reverence for the spirit of the natural world continues with an exploration of the intertidal waters and the great salt marsh lands of Cape Ann. This new show is intended to give the viewer a peek into the process that Murray employs to create his work. Consisting of preparatory drawings, preparatory oil studies, and three final large format paintings, the exhibition affirms the fundamental stages in the development of a final piece.

Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to presentย

Gloucester . Cape Ann | modern conversations

June 9 – June 29, 2022

Opening Reception on Saturday June 11th from 3-6pm.

Artists working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, have a unique vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? And how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. There is communication between artist and place; and we sense, we hear, those conversations in their art. Participating artists include: Coco Berkman . Ann Conneman . Celia Eldridge . Paige Farrell . Erin Luman . Jeffrey Marshall . Adin Murray . James Paradis . Michael Porter . Christopher Pullman . Esther Pullman . Beverly Ripple . Caleb Hershey Rulli . Juni Van Dyke.ย ย

Exhibition at Jane Deering Gallery June 2022

JANE DEERING ABOUT THIS SHOW:

My interest lies in how artists living and working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, express their vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? As they encounter it, and closely observe it, how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. There is communication between artist and place; and we sense, we hear, those conversations in their art.

The New York Times recently penned the phrase to see it all anew, an apt phrase that could easily have been the title for this show.

After giving the gallery to regional artists for their own exhibitions these past months, I am happy to be back at JDG for the summer season. Join me for this first show which celebrates seeing and hearing anew this place of home.

Formally Taught โ€ฆ and Not includes work by established artists who frequently exhibit in galleries, museums and public institutions, and inspiring work by Senior Citizens in the art program at The Rose Baker Senior Center โ€” creative people whose important lifeโ€™s work has circumvented formal art training.ย  Now with time and the passion to explore, these Seniors are continuing in their journey of self-expression. Their artwork is illuminating and proof that we are all equipped with a unique set of sensibilities informed by years of aesthetic practice implicit in daily living โ€” namely observation and the practice of evaluating how things look.
