PAINT ESSEX WET PAINT DAY AND AUCTION

SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 and SUNDAY, AUGUST 17, 2014

The Essex Merchants Group and Eventide Gallery at Periwinkles of Essex, Massachusetts is announcing its Third Annual Paint Essex Day and Wet Paint Auction. This year it will be a two day event held at the Greenbelt’s Cox Reservation at 82 Eastern Ave. in Essex. Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, 2014 rain or shine.

On Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, scores of artists from near and far will be arriving in Essex to artistically capture the Town’s limitless variety of local scenes and its magnificent landscape.

On Sunday, the previous day’s paintings will be auctioned off under the tent and in the barn at the Cox reservation.

There will also be a FREE demonstrations by two local artists, Larry Pumfrey from 11:00 to 12:00 and Marion Hall from 12:15 to1:15 PM followed by a FREE preview of all the weekend’s paintings from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. All will take place at the Essex County’s Cox Reservation in Essex.

This year’s event is open to a limited number of photographers and sculptors as well.

Beginning at 5:30 PM on Sunday, there will be a wine reception for the Wet Paint Silent and Live Auction, with hors d’oeuvres and live music. There will be a few changes this year that the Essex Merchant’s Group feel will greatly benefit auction attendees. The live auction will take place in a tent next to the barn, paintings will be hung on new displays for the silent auction which will allow for better viewing, and the Essex Merchant’s Group purchased a new software program that will allow for speedier purchases and check-out.

Painters of all levels are welcome to paint at various outdoor locations including the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Cogswell’s Grant, the Cox Reservation and along Main Street, as well as the interiors of participating local antique shops and other businesses (one painter per interior, must sign-up in advance).

Bob Coviello, Chair of the Essex Merchants Group, says “Essex is a perfect fit for this event. There are innumerable natural views, historical settings and enough quirky locations and artifacts to fill a thousand canvases. The Merchants Group is excited to bring this event to Essex”.

Coviello also adds his thanks to the growing list of sponsors for this year’s event: Bank Gloucester, First Ipswich Bank, Claire and David Lane, Wheelworks Pottery, Woodman’s of Essex, Chebacco Market, Essex County Greenbelt, Eventide Gallery of Essex and Michael Bider Antiques. He notes that additional sponsors can be added at any time.

Advance registration is suggested at the cost of $10 per painter. This price includes the artist’s entrance to the auction as well. Registration the morning of the event will be at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Main Street beginning at 8:00 AM. Cost is $15 per painter if not registered in advance.

Tickets for the public for the Wet Paint Auction and Reception are $25 per person. Tickets to the Auction and Reception will be available for purchase from various merchants throughout Essex including Main Street Antiques, Bider’s Antiques, the First Bank of Ipswich and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

Proceeds from this event will be utilized by the Essex Merchants Group to promote the Town of Essex as a destination for shopping, dining, recreation and appreciation of its historic, open space and natural beauty. In addition, an art scholarship has been established to be awarded in 2015.

Photographing the Nubian goats was a delight. The little ones are very playful and affectionate and, when first let out of their pen in the morning, are super rambunctious. Apple Street Farm’s manger Phoebe explains that Nubian goats are great milking goats and wiki informs that Nubians are known for the high butterfat content of their milk.

Seems Some People Don’t Know

MADFISH OPEN
The Madfish Grille is open. The food is good (I’ve eaten there myself and can attest). There is live music. There is not a 45 minute to an hour wait to get in, get a menu and be waited on. Nothing against The Studio or The Rudder, they are both great, but if you are on Rocky Neck and are hungry, you might want to revisit Madfish Grille. Open Wednesday through Sunday from noon for lunch until midnight. Yesterday there were great musicians performing in the afternoon and the vibe was just incredible.

Also, mark your calendars, we are now be back to having weekly GMG Mup Ups on Madfish Wharf, starting this weekend on SATURDAYs at 9:30 when Joey is off, so he can come, and all you GMG fobs who go to church on Sunday so could never make Mup Ups before, you now can too! First food competition Mug Up coming up soon. Watch for it!

20140811_132207As promised, we always tell FOBs before good stuff sells out and we’re almost out of VIP seats for James Montgomery’s Celebrate Gloucester Benefit for The Open Door on Friday, August 22nd at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion (the BIG tent).  VIP seats are right up front, plus you get Exclusive Early Entry and the Celebrate Gloucester Commemorative VIP Laminate in the picture.  Tickets available here.

Even if you miss VIP (which you probably will if you don’t get them by tomorrow morning), you can still get a great seat inside the tent.  We’re setting up the stage and seating so everyone gets a great view — and if the weather is good you can even sit at a table under the stars.

City Mouse, Country Mouse

Other than four years of college in Virginia, I’ve lived on Cape Ann for my entire life….however, I’m also fairly well-traveled.  I’ve traveled in Africa, I’ve been to Central America, I’ve been all over Mexico, to the Caribbean, the West Indies, and throughout the United States and into Canada.  And, for what it’s worth, I’m pretty city savvy.  I spent a lot of time playing in the city in my teens, 20s, and 30s….and photographed inside Fenway Park for several years in a row…heading in and out of Boston each night during home stands. 

So, while I call this post “City Mouse, Country Mouse”…I’m not necessarily either.  However, I sure as all hell played the role of Country Mouse the other night in Boston…and I am NOT happy about it.

I am truly, truly an idiot. 

This is how it went down.

I was meeting a friend in the city…just outside of Faneuil Hall.  I know the area well, but was heading to a particular parking garage that I had never been to.  I took a left onto Broad Street and saw the 75 State Street Garage in the Financial District ahead…a bit ahead, on my right.  The traffic was total clusterf___.  Horns were honking.  Almost in front of the entrance to the lot, a white taxi was stopped, coming from the opposite direction, blocking a good part of my lane so that I couldn’t go forward.  A nice man, on a cell phone, with a pile of money in his hand, appeared in front of my car and helped me navigate my kind of large SUV around the taxi and towards the garage entrance.  He asked if I was parking, asked how long, and asked me for $10.  As I didn’t have a ten….I handed him a $20…with a smile.  He flipped through his pile of cash….as if looking for change….and then said, “just pull on down there (pointing to the garage) for a second and I’ll catch you.”   “No problem,” I said.

I’m not sure why I wasn’t on my A Game during that exact moment in time….but, it only took about 6 seconds for me to realize that effer was off with my $$$ and that I’d clearly not be seeing him or my “change” anytime soon.  I literally sat on the entrance ramp to the garage for probably a minute contemplating how I could have been such an idiot.  Large parking lots never ask for money outside upon arrival. I know that. Everyone knows that. I also replayed my short conversation with the “kind and helpful” gentleman….and couldn’t help but think what a tremendous actor he was.  While I was mad as all heck….I also couldn’t help but give him kudos for standing right there…in the middle of a super crowded busy city street…stealing money in broad daylight.  And doing so with such manners and such a calm demeanor.

Shame on him….shame on me.

You may be happy to know that dinner at Strega in the North End was excellent, drinks at the Sail Loft were just like old times,  and the company of an amazing friend more than made up for the $20 that I was scammed.  My ego, however, is still bruised.

Consider yourselves warned my friends.
