For the Love of all Things Sandy!

No one loves the beach more than me, but after watching this grotesque monster work its way across the beach, it is going to be a long time before I sit my butt down on that same wet sand again.

Blech!  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I am by no means a wuss….but, I find this little sucker nauseating.  Over reaction, you say? Maybe to you.  But, I think not.  I’ve helped saw the heads off of bluefin tuna without batting an eye, but this slimy, invasive little creatures has the ability to slither places it simply doesn’t belong and it is simply more than I can handle.

I’ll be shopping for next summer’s super high beach chair…ummm…now.

Comedy at The Rhumb Line November 6th

Fred writes-

Hi Joey

We are having a comedy show at The Rhumb Line Nov. 6th with two people with strong connections to Gloucester…including nationally known Paul D’Angello who is known in real life as Paul Murphy . He was an Assistant DA in Gloucester for a few years and did stand up on the side as Paul D’Angello. Also joining him is Dugie Russell who was the District Court Officer in Gloucester for 15+ years. They are both friends of mine and I might do a little stand up myself. It’s going to be a laugh riot.

Tickets are only $15 and are on sale at The Rhumb Line.

Doors open at 6pm ..The show starts at 7pm .

World’s Best Dog Walking Team!

Pilar and Emma ©Kim Smith 2014You know your pooch is in superb hands with the East Gloucester Dog Walkers!

East Gloucester Dog Walkerrs ©kim Smith 2014

Emma, Pilar, Lily, and occasionally Emma’s brother Ben, manage the menagerie beautifully, to the extent of even bringing along a water bowl on hot summer days. They are kind, gentle, patient, and loving towards their charges. Our Rosie is having the time of her life with the East Gloucester Dog Walkers (along with socializing with the other dogs, too). This great team certainly practices the three P’s of a successful business: Positive, Polite, and Professional.

Thank you East Gloucester Dog Walkers for taking such great care of our neighborhood pets!

Fun Therapy for Me

With my No. 1 Angel, Donna, there are many variations to a sick/recovering friend’s visit. It’s always positive, and could be to sit and talk, give me ride to a medical appointment such as chemotherapy, medication pickup, or score some Monkey Butt Powder at Rite Aid. Today, Donna took me to work, via Goose Cove, where we had discovered a photo op weeks ago. We enjoyed shooting the beautiful displays of the dory and a scary looking axe-wielding clown. You see, this gets me out of constantly thinking about cancer, diet and physical therapy. Call it “Fun Therapy,” and I share the results with you here. FredFall Dory4973wm

What’s Happening at GHS

What’s Happening at GHS 10/8/14

Senior College Planning Night will be offered in the lecture hall at Gloucester High School on Thursday October 9, at 6:30pm. The Guidance Staff will present valuable information on the college selection and admission process. All Senior’s and their parents are requested to attend.

The Guidance Counselors have begun meeting with all seniors to ensure all of the planning and preparation of last year is progressing on target and make any changes or modifications to their college and career plans.

The PSAT’s will be offered at GHS on October 15, 2014 for all juniors and any sophomores who may be interested. This practice opportunity for the SAT’s is a wonderful time to begin thinking about the entire college application and acceptance process. To register for the PSAT, a payment of $22 (cash only) may be deposited with Mrs. Mondello before school, during lunch or after school.

Any parent interested in their own log on and account for our Naviance Family Connection on line website may call their child’s Guidance Counselor for log on access to assist your students in the College search and application process.

SAT’s will be offered at Gloucester High School this Saturday. Please ensure that your students are
well rested, have their admission ticket, a valid picture ID, at least two pencils, a calculator, a small snack, and are on time for this College Admissions testing experience.

“A new social media app has just come to our attention.  The app is called Street Chat.  Anyone can post photographs and messages, and anyone nearby can make comments, anonymously, and post on it. If people were to use this app with compassion, empathy and thoughtful reflection, this could be a pretty cool app that fosters positive creativity and cooperation, but just like other social media sites and apps, when used irresponsibly it becomes a social media problem. Unfortunately, it is being used to post hurtful and offensive messages. While I hope we will soon have it shut down from within, at present we have no way to shut it down from without.  However, we are actively partnering with the Gloucester police department and other authorities to expose, and hold accountable, users of this app who may have bullied or harassed another, or have otherwise broken the law.  Violators will be subject to both school and legal consequences.” Erik Anderson, Principal GHS

What is going on with my DCS/Fisher Paykel appliance’s?

The timing of this couldn’t have come at a worse time of year. This is the season to bake, and prepare for the holidays. The time of year my kitchen gets the most use.  I absolutely love my DCS/ Fisher Paykal appliances, they are by far my most favorite and most used appliance’s in my kitchen…they were my Best friends throughout the creation of  my cookbook “Gifts of Gold  In A Sicilian Kitchen With Sista Felicia; Harvest.”  After hours of reaserch and several phone calls, per the recommendation of DCS, St. Barry took the control panel out of the ovens yesterday and shipped it off to DCS for service,….and we can’t find anyone in our area to service the grill or dishwasher. Last Night’s Taste of Cape Ann

As host to the fantastic Taste of Cape Ann, the Cruiseport Gloucester was the place to be last night!

We went….and we tasted.

What a tremendous collection of Cape Ann’s finest purveyors, establishments, and eateries serving up some delicious food, decadent treats, and a choice selection of beverages…all in the name of a fantastic cause.  Can you say, “Win, Win”?  Many excellent raffle items also helped to raise more money and give other local businesses the opportunity to get involved in this tremendous event.

All ticket sales will go towards supporting Cape Ann YMCA Teen Service Trips to New Orleans, Navajo Nation, and Nicaragua.  I’m not sure I can think of a better learning opportunity for our community’s youth than providing them the chance to help communities that are in dire need.  It is worth mentioning that I couldn’t have been more impressed by the students that were in attendance to represent the YMCA last night.  They were enthusiastic, incredibly helpful, and wonderfully polite.  Several times throughout the evening I was asked, “Is there anything I can do for you?” and they were right there to remove plates from tables, tidy the function space, and offer friendly smiles.  Great job, kids!  Way to represent!
