Tuesday the Coast Guard Cutter ‪#‎Pendant‬ started flooding due to a breached hull from all her thick ice-breaking. The crew quickly did damage control, and stopped the leak.

The Massachusetts State Police provided divers to get her back out to sea with less than 24 hours lost. BZ Pendant Crew and Mass State Troopers!

The Pendant was commissioned in August 1963. ‪#‎opRENEW‬ ‪

Is Taylor Swift gonna sue me for this post?

I have to admit I kinda like Taylor Swift.  She’s cute and she can write a hit song.  But yesterday, what little admiration I had for her vanished when I heard this piece on the radio informing us that Taylor Swift now owns the phrase “Speak Now.”  That’s right, according to NPR, Taylor Swift “… was granted a trademark for the phrase ‘speak now.'”  But that’s not all.  She’s applied for dozens of trademarks, including one for the phrase “Love, Love, Love” (see a list of her trademark applications here)  Wow!  Something is awry here.

Let’s start with the fact that “Love, Love, Love” is beginning of a Beatles song by Lennon-McCartney that is far better than anything Taylor Swift has ever written or is likely to write during her lifetime.

Don’t get me wrong, artists deserve copyright protection for their works and I heartily approve of giving songwriters copyrights to their songs.  But Taylor Swift has a trademark on the phrase “Speak Now” giving her exclusive rights to use it on “Textiles and textile goods, not included in other classes; bed and table covers.” See the detail here.  So if you print out this post and stick it on your pillow, you might actually be breaking the law.

Perhaps if there are any copyright lawyers reading this, you could answer me this: Without infringing on Little Ms. Swift, could I sell a tablecloth for wedding receptions that said, “Speak Now of Forever Hold Your Piece”?

How does this happen?  And what’s next?  Is Paul McCartney going to challenge her application for “Love, Love Love”?  Is he going to apply for a trademark for the phrase “She Loves You” or better yet, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”?

Preparations For The Fest Of St. Joseph Is Well Underway!

The planning baking, cleaning, and rearrangement of the house has begun! Over the weekend while cleaning, I decided to make a batch of “Rose Pedal Infused Sugar & Rose Pedal Jelly” using rose pedals left over from Valentines Day. My clever way to recycle the fragrant roses into a delightful sweet treat of Heart Shaped Linzer Cookies for my Novena Guest, that will tie in my families “Red Rose” Altar Theme onto the dinner room table where homemade pastries and confections are shared during our traditional nightly “Novena Coffee Time” held after each Rosary!

Coconut Is Free At Last!

 A few days ago we were greeted at the door by a very proud Coconut sporting her “dangling” plastic cone.  God only know how she managed to wiggle it loose while we were out! After a few failed attempts, with the sad puppy eye stair down, the cone was successfully refastened around Coconuts neck for the remainder of her recommended recovery days post eye surgery, preformed by Dr. Ray Cahill at SeaPort Veterinary Hospital. Happy to report that our Coconut was finally freed from wearing the dreaded “hard plastic Cone” yesterday and tomorrow she will be off to K-9Kuts for a much need bath and day of beauty with Julie Borge!

Boats, Boats, and More Boats

If you didn’t get to the New England Boat Show this year, stay tuned for next year’s dates.  I really can’t recommend it enough…whether you’re in the market for a boat…or just love boats.

With a huge number of boat manufacturers and industry vendors….as well as, engaging and interactive activities for the kiddos, a day at the boat show is a fantastic (and inexpensive) way to spend a day.  We paid $26….kids under 15 are free.  Parking was $15….which I suppose could be avoided if you don’t mind walking a bit and if there isn’t 9 feet of snow on the ground next year (fingers crossed).  The most expensive part of the day was the quick bite to eat that the boys needed to rally through the second 3 hours.

Sadly, my iPhone battery died after 4 hours of photo taking so many boats are not represented in this slide show.  I was also shooting more like a mom and less like a blog contributor, so if you can’t tell what type of boat it is, I apologize.

Something you don’t see in Gloucester

especially this time of year, except in someone’s home. Aside from the lack of cold and snow, my favorite thing here in Florida are the flowers, especially the orchids coming into bloom all around us now. Hope this brings a little ray of light and warmth to everyone in Gloucester. Spring is right around the corner.

Fun Packed Weekend with Rubber Duck

First a shout out to Maplewood Car Wash. Rubber Duck says there is nothing that makes the day just a little bit sunnier than driving around in a shiny vehicle. And you may ask, “Paul, is that an environmentally sound decision to drive a half ton Pick Up Truck?” and my reply is I rescued close to 5,000 pounds of over 16 year old iron so I put the “Reuse and Recycle” into my tree hugging thank you very much.

Then I shovel the front porch so maybe I can get my girl scout cookies delivered. They were unwilling to throw the boxes over the snow drift. And shovel out the oil tank intake but I look at the propane tank (or rather do not look since it is invisible under a fifteen foot drift) and think, “screw that.”

But my first “honey do” Sunday morning is something is wrong with the hot water. Wrong as in, not very hot. Shoot, out of propane? But the stove fires up. I look at water heater. My analytical mind quickly narrows down problem to the exhaust fan is not making the correct noise. The centrifugal fan is usually making a “WEEEEE” noise only it is making a lowercase “ummm” noise. six screws later I find my problem.

A mouse! How did she get there? As I was shoveling the bulkhead doors to cellar just yesterday I was looking a the exhaust port and marveling at the nice job of installation because they put wire mesh in the opening. But inside there is a cooling port for the fan motor that looks like this.

A few minutes sticking needles in it and if Mister Mouse can get past this he might be small enough to take a ride and get the full Space Mountain E ticket.

Why Mickey, why? Long story but it is because I did not follow Bill Rowell’s suggestion (Burrhead Oil Rockport) and wrap some insulation on my exposed oil line and it got sluggish and my furnace died and my house was wicked chilly when we got here on Friday and the mouse needed to find a warm place. Speaking of Burrhead, have you ever said, “You gotta start charging me for these emergency visits Bill”. All he did was teach me how to prime and jump start my furnace myself. Bill also cracks me up with his growing up in Rockport stories but I will stop there before we both get into trouble.
