Last chance to save money on tomorrow’s Beatles Benefit for UU Meetinghouse Restoration

Just because it’s a benefit doesn’t mean you can’t save a little money by getting your tickets on-line.  Go for it.

You’ll recognize the songs, but experience them in a wonderfully new way as they are interpreted by some of Cape Ann’s finest singer/songwriters. And you’ll continue to help restore one of Gloucester’s best-loved landmarks.

As quoted in today’s Gloucester Daily Times, “It’s such a historical landmark for religious freedom and freedom of thought,” said King. “This is a place we need to preserve.”  We agree.  Please join us.  And save a bit of money by getting your tickets now, right here.

“Too much of a good thing … can be wonderful”

You probably know this as one of Mae West’s most famous quotes and on Friday, she’ll be proven right once again.  Just like our Solstice benefit at Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse, this Friday, when 3rian King, Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis and others come together for a fresh take on The Beatles, we’ll have so much talent on stage that you could honestly complain it’s too much of a good thing.  But you won’t complain, will you?  Nope.  You’ll thank your lucky stars that you live in a town so full of talent that you can enjoy top quality entertainment all year long!  Or, you’ll kick yourself for not getting tickets and missing the show.  Which one will it be?  Get tickets here.

Once in a Lifetime!

Forgive my self-indulgence, but how often can one post something like this?!  So proud of my little guy!!  And….those employees at Fenway Park who arrange and execute these pregame ceremonies are beyond phenomenal!!  They made him feel like the most important person in the world even though they do this 81 times each season.

Warm fuzzies.

At first I thought it was an audition reel or something.  The ‘facts’ are actually true, and you’ll get a chuckle.

Are You Ready for Earth 2.0? It’s Out There!

Well, it’s pretty far away, but it’s still out there! If you didn’t know, I’m a huge space geek. I absolutely love this type of discovery, and all it conjures up! So, do you believe that other life is out there? Are we just one spec of  life-form compared to the bazillion galaxies that share our universe? Have you ever “seen” anything that you can’t explain? Feel free to click the link below and watch the video, and make sure you share your voice with the poll just below.  And by all means, slap some feedback if you want to get deep, or just share some of your sightings or ideas on the subject of ALIEN LIFE!

More fun with Radio Ads & Adobe Premiere

Some of you may remember the last time I added visuals to a radio ad and made a video.  Well I’ve done it again for our UU Meetinghouse benefit next Friday, April 25 featuring local stars 3rian King, Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis, Joe Cardoza and Dennis Monagle with Boston-based Meff and Brendan Burns, all of whom “come together” as The Number Nines for a fresh take on The Beatles.

The Demolition Of Newell Stadium From The GHS Film Club

Hello All,

Yesterday the Gloucester High School Film Club uploaded a short video documenting the demolition of Newell Stadium from the fall of 2012. It really is worth taking 4 minutes to watch. Check it out here:

 Shaun Goulart

Social Studies Teacher
Gloucester High School

Editor’s Note From Joey:

You know I scheduled this post before watching the video and then went back and viewed it.  I didn’t think about it til the scenes were unfolding but what history those stands held.  As a player or as a spectator.  All those beams and seats supporting the crowds throughout the years being dismantled.  I’m sure it held a ton of great memories for people.   Thanks to the GHS Film club for documenting the demolition.

Vickie wants me to choose between Hendrix & The Beatles, but I won’t do it!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you already know that 2014 is the 5oth anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan.  I begged my parents to let me stay up and watch the show — and they agreed.  (Kids went to bed earlier in those days.)

It was a thrill!  Most everybody on my block was already a Beatles fan and the next day, we were utterly devoted.  We all started saving up for the next record.  Being the 5oth anniversary of what CBS billed as “The Night That Changed America”, you’ve also probably seen lots of Beatles tribute bands playing around.  Next Friday (April 25), Top area musicians come together (yes, pun intended) to help raise money for Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse as The Number Nines — but this is no tribute band.  Rather, it’s three top Gloucester singer/songwriters: 3rian King, Chelsea Berry and Renée Dupuis, joined by Boston‐based multi‐instrumentalist Meff and guitarist Brendan Burns with Gloucester’s favorite rhythm section: Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza.  They’ll perform their own originals plus fresh takes on The Beatles, like this soulful interpretation of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” featuring Chelsea Berry on vocals:

So, we can all agree that The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever, right?  “Not so fast,” quips Vickie.  “What about Jimi Hendrix?”
“What about him?” I reply.
“You’re always saying he’s the greatest rock guitar player, who ever lived.”
“Well, of course he is.” [Here’s one of my Hendrix favorites]

“So how can The Beatles be the best rock band ever?”
“Oh come on.  I can’t choose between The Beatles and Hendrix!”

So the next night, April 26, our friend Jon Butcher is bringing his powerful new show, The Jon Butcher Axis: Celebrating the Music of Jimi Hendrix to the Larcom Theatre for their Boston area debut.  Check out Jon’s version of another one of my favorite Hendrix tunes:

I’ll be at both.  You can be too.  You don’t have to choose.

Get The Number Nines tickets here.  Get Axis tickets here.

Wicked Tuna Behind The Scenes! INTENSE!

Not gonna lie, all that high tech camera gadgetry made my pants tight.

New Film: Monarch Migration Interview with Tom Emmel

Horses neigh, bugs crawl across the lens, and Monarchs flutter in the background —interview on the mountaintop and it was all beautiful! Video includes footage from my forthcoming film, Beauty on the Wing ~ Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly.

Monarch Migration Interview with Tom Emmel, filmed at the summit of the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Angangueo, Mexico.

This was Tom’s 40th trip to Angangueo to study the Monarchs. In this interview, he provides some historical perspective from those very first trips to the remote Oyamel fir forests atop the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Mountains. We learn how scientists count millions of Monarchs. Tom discusses the state of the Monarch migration today and why it is in crisis.

Tom Emmel is the Director of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florida, Gainesville. Additional footage shot at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Reserve and at the base of Sierra Chincua.

The “American Blogger” Documentary May Be The Biggest Crock Of Shitake Mushrooms Ever

I first saw this video on Barstool Sports but I’m thinking the whole thing has to be a joke, right?

Like a documentary is supposed to capture people in real life, if you watch that trailer you would think that the only people that blog are wealthy privileged female designers whose houses are spotless. Was there even one guy in the whole lot?

I feel like the whole trailer was something made up for The Onion or some satirical Saturday Night Live Skit where in the very next scene all these women hop on unicorns after farting out rainbows.

Somehow us lumping trailer loads of stinky herring at 5AM didn’t make the cut 😉
