Three Cape Ann-ers are back from two weeks in China

Three Cape Ann-ers are back from  two weeks in China.  Eli Jacobe, James Auditore and Elizabeth Enfield went to Beijing for training in Chinese health and fitness methods, which are called Chi Kung. They joined in with 15 other intrepid Westerners to get woken up at 6:30 AM for  workouts before breakfast. Then there was a daily full schedule of instruction in traditional Chinese healing skills  for oneself and others.  The place was the Beijing  Medical Exchange Center, an institute founded 20 years ago to preserve the traditional approach to Chinese medicine.  The founding president, Professor Wan Su-Jian, M.D. is a four star general in the Chinese army’s medical department.  Several times a year he holds courses for foreigners, providing translators and including some sightseeing in the program.

This coming week here in Gloucester, Eli and James are hosting two Open Houses about Chi Kung at  Center Street Kung Fu Studio at One Center Street, 2nd floor.  It’s directly above Passports restaurant.  The free  Open Houses are Wednesday evening the 16th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and again Thursday morning the 17th from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.  There’ll be  lessons in Chi Kung movements and meditations.  Plus, on a huge screen, lots of scenic video that Eli shot over there.

Here’s some photos from their expedition.

Happy No Bra Day! 10/13/2013

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month people are coming up with unique ways to celebrate and support the cause, or in this case support the cause without support. today is being deemed by many, “No Bra Day.”

After doing a little research into what could have become my favorite day of the year after my birthday, I found that there is an actual National No Bra Day in on July 9th. That means that this is just some made up day, most likely by a guy who is in need of seeing some breasts covered only by shirts rather than bras and shirts.

People all over social media are buying into it, and it is fine by me… Raise awareness for a good cause, and have a little fun doing it!

Gloucester –CERT — Visible House Numbers and Working Detectors Save Lives

October is Gloucester Fire Prevention Month.  With this in mind, a new safety campaign – Gloucester CERT-Visible House Numbers and Working Detectors Save Lives – is about to begin.  This pilot campaign is a joint effort led by Gloucester CERT (Citizen Emergency Response Team) in conjunction with Mayor Carolyn Kirk, Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith and the City of Gloucester Department of Public Works, who are working with Pathways for Children, the Gloucester TRIAD Council, the Gloucester Council on Aging, and CAARA (Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association).

CERT members will begin door to door daytime visits to homes in the North Gloucester neighborhoods of Bayview, Lanesville and Annisquam on the morning of Saturday, October 19th.  CERT’s campaign mission is to focus citizen awareness on the importance of visible house/building street numbers and to deliver educational safety literature with contact information to homes in the targeted neighborhoods.  While CERT’s pilot campaign is limited to North Gloucester neighborhoods, this effort is intended to expand citywide leading to:  (1) visible identifying numbers on every home and business throughout Gloucester; (2) working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in every home and business; and (3) visible street signs on every corner.

Gloucester’s first responders have reported difficulty locating victims because of unnumbered homes and businesses and unreported missing or hidden street signs.  Every minute lost due to difficulty locating an inadequately numbered home can make the difference between life and death and the level of property damage suffered.  You can help emergency responders locate you quickly during an emergency by having your home and business clearly posted with numbers large enough to be seen easily from the street in a contrasting color from the background on which they are posted.  Four-inch fluorescent numerals are recommended for optimum nighttime visibility.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk said:  “This important public safety program has been an ongoing issue and we are delighted that CERT is taking the initiative to once again bring this to the public’s attention.  I urge all residents to take advantage of CERT’s efforts to assist.”

Two Sisters

I love it when I can make people laugh. These two laughed a lot today during their visit to the gallery. On the left is Jamie Maggs of Chelmsford MA, who is a dental assistant. She's 23 and is babysitting tonight. On the right is older sis' Kelly, a nurse in Amherst NH. 24 and hoping for a date tonight. I'm sure they'll be fine, and they'll be back. I has so happy to host them for a short while.

She Could Be My Daughter

It doesn't happen every day, that someone you connect with returns for a second visit. Duane and Sandy from MI from yesterday's story returned, and as we were speaking Diana Long came in. As we talked, Sandy turned to Diana and said: "You look like the daughter I never had." Wow, you decide.

Shortly thereafter, Sandy left the gallery soon and returned with a gift for Diana, a huge silver cuff. They had just met minutes before in my gallery and I am speechless. Neither of these women will forget this for the rest of their lives, and neither will I.

I'll also never forget these folks. Duane is made of solid granite, which you can feel if you pat him on the back. He needs the cane, but I'll be his cane any time. His combat incident resulted in 3 fatalities, but he survived. He's a 25% Chippowa American Indian, whose tribe has a reservation at Red Lake MN.

So just to wrap this up, here is Duane in basic training in '69 at Fort Knox, TN. He's standing next to a 114 amphibious personnel carrier. His Chippawa name is " Wind in His Tail." I wish Duane and Sandy a fair wind, and smooth sailing. After being here for one day, they said to me: "I think we could live here." I sincerely hope so.

Although I dearly love seagulls, I agree with Al that the cormorant could be a better mascot for GMG.  What do people think?

Big live music weekend coming up ~ so much to do ~ how do you choose?

Once again, we recommend that you CLICK HERE to get your tickets today if you want to be assured of a seat.

SUNDAY

A Hero Shot, in More Ways Than One

As I was walking to work today, this guy stepped aside for me to pass. As I walked by him, I mentioned how much I liked his cane, not realizing what it symbolized. I saw him and his wife later sitting on the bench in front of Palazolas. So you all know me... This is Duane Bellish and his loving wife of 54 years, Sandy. They live in Grayling, northern Michigan. They love Glosta', having never even been here before. "All the people we've met have been fun, interesting, and most helpful. Fred, you alone have made our weekend." We spent maybe an hour together talking. They are devout Christians, and blessed me half a dozen times. Me, I bless them only once, but to the power of 20. God Bless Duane and Sandy x 20!

Duane served in the US Army in '69 and '70. He was a Tank Commander in the 25th Infantry, Driving 112APC tanks on the Cambodian Border (Base Camp Cuchi). Two Purple Hearts and still carrying shrapnel. Today, Duane needs his cane, and with Sandy sells home grown plants, cut flowers, at the Detroit Eastern Market, which is 150+ years old. They agree that Detroit is not doing well. I gave them a GMG sticka', but was too intrigued with them to include it in the photo. My grandpa Yewell also got two purple hearts in the trenches of France in WWI.

THE CAPE ANN YMCA CELEBRATES NATIONAL

“LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL” WITH A FLASH MOB

The 14th Annual National Rally for Afterschool Programs

image

Children, parents and community members will join together at a “Lights On Afterschool” flash mob event at the Cape Ann YMCA on October 17 at 4:15 to celebrate the achievements of afterschool students and draw attention to the need for more quality afterschool programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon.

To further spotlight the “Lights On Afterschool” initiative, kids and staff at Cape Ann YMCA afterschool programs at each Gloucester and Rockport elementary school will also show off their flash mob skills with dance moves to today’s hottest songs.

Cape Ann Executive Director Tim Flaherty said, “Lights On Afterschool celebrates the remarkable work being done by students who attend our afterschool programs and is a powerful reminder that afterschool programs keep children safe, inspire them to learn and relieve working parents of worries about how their children spend their afternoons.”

In every Gloucester and Rockport elementary school, the Cape Ann Y offers quality, affordable licensed care where kids learn values and skills taught by caring adults. There are also a variety of clubs that appeal to every kid’s interest: Block Buster Lego, drama, clay animation, No Cook Cooking, Fit Club, swimming, sports, reading club and many more. The programs run from the closing school bell until 6:00pm Monday through Friday and are open on holidays, school vacations and half days. The Y is the trusted choice for hundreds of Cape Ann families. Financial aid is available for those families in need. For more program information, contact Brian Flynn at flynnb@northshoreymca.org.

In Massachusetts, according to America After 3PM data released by the Afterschool Alliance in 2009, 18% of school-age children are in afterschool programs, while 26% are unsupervised in the afternoons and another 13% are in the care of brothers and sisters.  According to the survey, the parents of 36% of children in the state who are not already in an afterschool program would enroll their children in one, if a program were available to them—an indication of the considerable unmet demand for afterschool programs in the state. For more survey results, visit www.afterschoolalliance.org/AA3PM.cfm.

Hi, Joey,

The Gloucester Education Foundation held its annual Celebration last Friday evening, October 5, at the North Shore Arts Association.  We had a great turnout–about 170 friends and supporters showed up to celebrate GEF’s work on behalf of the Gloucester Public School District.

Since its beginning back in 2005, GEF has generated $2.7 million in support to benefit the District.  On hand to speak to the crowd were GEF President Maggie Rosa; Dr. Richard Safier, Superintendent of the Gloucester Public School District; and Courtney Richardson, Director of Education at the Cape Ann Museum, who spoke about a new collaboration between GEF, the Museum and the schools.

Heidi Dallin was there with her drama students from Gloucester Stage, all of whom generously volunteered their time to help serve the guests.  Two of them, Jordan Westling, who is a student at Gloucester High, and Talia DeWolfe, who is at the O’Maley Innovation Middle School, also took turns at the podium to address the audience about their experiences in GEF-funded programs.

Hi Joey –

The PR for Gloucester team at Warner Communications has introduced a Gloucester business to the 700,000+ monthly readers of Parade.com – Rebecca Wallace and her Main Street business, The Well for Integrative Medicine, are featured in Resuscitate and Repair Your Summer-Parched Skin, Part 1! We’re delighted to see the inclusion of hyperlinks to The Well’s website – and especially the mention of their location in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
