Dave Sag’s Blues Party to Host Cheryl Arena this Thursday night @ The Rhumb Line 10.17.2013

Dave Saginario

Dave says,

Another fun week ahead, so fasten your seat belt, and let’s get goin’!
This Thursday at the Rhumb Line, Ms. Cheryl Arena, the Bachelorette of the Blues, has got you in her sights as she rampages thru the North Shore in search of big game. You are the target. She has a new CD out and it’s a rip-snorter. She sings, she blows harp, and she’ll have you quaking and spazzing out on the dance floor with her artery-clogging renditions of hoary chestnuts and and old time favorites. She’ll be bringing along a  real lightning bolt of a guitarist in the mild-mannered form of Mr. Mike DiBari. He’ll put a wedgie in your mental Spanx®!!  Mr. Ephraim Lowell, late of Roomful O’ Blooze, will be in the drummer’s electric chair, flailing against the current. I will be the basest. It’s gonna be shocking!

Dogtown’s Present Inhabitants, 1908

Dogtown was still used, even after it was abandoned. This photo, taken by Alice Curtis on July 30th, 1908, shows a cleared landscape and fenced roads. Just over the hill is the City of Gloucester. Now it's a nature preserve donated by Roger Babson. It's very overgrown and is very interesting. Dogtown was part of early American history, not much of which was recorded. But when I go there, I can kind of feel it. It's eerie, and a lot of people feel the same way.

Bittersweet

grand finale mug up 2013

We had a wonderful grand finale Mug Up at Khan Studio and the GMG Gallery on Sunday. The weather was perfect, and fun was had by all, from the youngest to the oldest.   As always, there was plenty of good stuff to eat, but the definite showstopper was Sister Felicia’s cranberry orange tort – scrumptous!

It was a little bittersweet.  Season has ended, the gallery is closed, and winter is around the corner.  But don’t fear, there will be more Mug Up fun over the winter as hosts James Eves at Cape Ann Giclee, Fred Bodin, Donna Ardizonni and others take up the mantle and keep the tradition alive through the dark, cold winter months.   Maybe Joey will even have another one at the dock!

Representing from Cincinnati, Ohio

Two very fun folks. On the left is Heather Chalk, who works at the Mt. Adams Bar & Grill, which was the first bar in Ohio to obtain a liquor license in Ohio after Prohibition. The establishment has a very interesting history: http://www.mtadamsbarandgrill.com/history_bg.htm. On the right is is Ed Gollar, also of Cincinnati, who manages a company, and ironically sells a keychain device, which will measure your blood/alcohol content. You can see it at breathkey.com. Do you think they met in the bar?

The Seconds are Ticking Away!

Ever wonder when you will; Bite the dust, kick the can, take the dirt nap, etc.

Below are my results. I’m sure there are people who want no part of knowing when they will pass. I have no problem with knowing. I think it’s a good idea to get a heads up. This way you know when to Max out your Credit cards.

I can live with 72 but 80 would be better. I guess I will have to quit smoking those little cigars, stop eating pop tarts, stop drinking coffee, etc…

Dogtown, 1923

This is the "Old Pearce Cellar" in 1923. Dogtown was an open landscape and abandoned at that time. Now it's a jungle, and I advise visitors not to go there late in the day, never alone, and always with a charged up cell phone. I've been to Dogtown 50 times, and I always get lost. People will cry and panic when they're lost there. But you can hear the car traffic not too far away. Bushwhack your way out. That's never easy or comfortable with the swamps and pricker bushes.

Eleanor Roosevelt Quote of the Week From Greg Bover

October 10, 2013

“What other people think of me is none of my business”

Eleanor Roosevelt  (1884-1962)

image

A New Yorker by birth and niece of Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor lost both parents and a brother before she was eleven. She attended Allenwood Academy in London and was influenced by headmistress Marie Souvestre, an early feminist. She married Franklin Delano Roosevelt, her fifth cousin, in 1904, and supported his forays into politics despite his polio and her discovery of his extra-marital affairs. Wishing to carve out an identity for herself, she became active, first in the New York State Democratic Party when FDR was Governor, and then as the most outspoken of all First Ladies when he was elected President for the first of his four terms in 1932. She was an ardent supporter of the rights of women and minorities, and created much controversy when she opposed some of her husband’s policies, including Japanese-American internment during the Second World War. Following FDR’s death in 1945 she was named one of the first delegates to the United Nations, the founding of which she had strongly supported, and continued her social justice advocacy for the rest of her life, becoming one of the most admired and respected Americans of her era.

Note: This quote is also attributed to Wayne Dyer, Rupaul, Simon Cowell and several others. ER is the earliest author I could find.
