My friend Aram Nersesian, Capt. of schooner Heron, got this photo of his wheel during the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race last week. I would like to challenge your readers to come up with a caption.
My View of Life on the Dock
Hi Joey,
On a recent visit to the railways, I snapped this shot of a Schooner Roseway crewmember who seemed to be right at home as he sat atop one of the masts.
Enjoy!

The 127 mile Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) starts October 17th. This year’s fleet includes several schooners familiar to us here in Gloucester ___ Adventurer 65, Hindu, Liberty Clipper, Light Reign, Norfolk Rebel, Pride of Baltimore II and Virginia. http://www.schoonerrace.org/fleet13.htm
Every boat will have a tracker to enable watching the race live. Keep your eye on the race website for a tracker link to be posted prior to the start. The Chesapeake can get pretty rough, and this has often been the case. To add interest you can get real time wind info as well as the forecast along the route from the NOAA site. I did this race in Green Dragon six times and am familiar with the bay and many of the boats, so it’s great sport watching on the internet. An all-nighter at the computer in a safe, dry, warm place with a little rum is not a terrible alternative to racing.
There is an all-day pig and oyster roast / awards ceremony at the Portsmouth, VA Visitor Center. I got these shots from the adjacent Marriott Hotel.

Cape Ann TV’s Lisa Smith sent this video by Josef Hnulik, filmed aboard Schooner Adventure during this year’s Schooner Festival featuring Daisy Nell & Captain Stan on the soundtrack.
Come aboard the Schooner Adventure for a sail in Gloucester Schooner Festival’s Mayor’s Race. It is the Adventure’s first race after she underwent a restoration project lasting two decades. The crew is proud of this historic fishing vessel, as they are the ones who restored her to her former grandeur.

Hi Joey,
Friday was a busy at at Gloucester Marine Railway.
The Roseway is up on the rails. Her crew are busy taking down her rigging in preparation for her masts being pulled on Monday morning (for inspection).
The Phyllis A is minus a few boards right now as she continues to be rehab’s.
I was able to capture some shotsof the Liberty Star as she was being lifted out.
You can see the Roseway’s crew up in the rigging beyond the Liberty Star in the last shot.
How nice to see 5 wooden boats (the Adventure and Highlander Sea as well) at the GMR.

Hi Joey-
I work for Annabelles PetCare in Gloucester. So, of course, I noticed how the dogs were enjoying the Cyclocross Races at Stage Fort Park just as much as their humans were!
Best-Janet
Joey,
Took this today, it was just gorgeous from Rocky Neck today! Hope you will share. 🙂

Hi Joey
Don’t know if you have room for a couple of shots I took this morning at Rust Island with my new Sony NEX-5 camera. Great features.
Thanks for the tip.

While searching though my photo library, I discovered a batch of stills from the Schooner Festival that I have not yet posted because I was so intent on editing the Schooner Festival video. I’ll try to post them this weekend–if everyone hasn’t already had enough of schooner photos!
The Schooner Roseway is a National Historic Landmark, owned and operated by World Ocean School, which is located in Camden, Maine. She is a gaff-rigged schooner and was first launched from Essex in 1925. The Roseway runs sails out of Boston during the summer and out of Savannah, Georgia and St. Croix during the winter months.
If you have sailed on the Schooner Roseway, I would love to know about your experience. Please leave a comment in the comment section. Thank you!
History of the Roseway from the World Ocean School website:
In the fall of 1920 a Halifax, Nova Scotia, newspaper challenged the fisherman of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to a race between the Halifax fishing schooners and the Gloucester fleet. Therefore many schooners, such as Roseway, built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races.
Roseway, 137′ in sparred length, was designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family’s shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts. Father and son worked side by side on Roseway, carrying on a long New England history of wooden shipbuilding. She was commissioned by Harold Hathaway of Taunton, Massachusetts, and was named after an acquaintance of Hathaway’s “who always got her way.” Despite her limited fishing history, Roseway set a record of 74 swordfish caught in one day in 1934.

Hi Joey,
Sunday afternoon was a spectacular day for a sail. The Adventure took full advantage with the first of hopefully many Thank You Sails. We sailed with 52 people who have/had been volunteers, donors, crew and board members at various times in the last 25 years.
It was so much fun to have the various ‘generations’ of the Adventure’s restoration team aboard. There were so many stories shared, friendships renewed, and new friendships started. We plan to continue our Thank You Sails with intention of including as many of the people as possible who have participated in making this dream a reality.

Rick and I enjoyed a wonderful evening on The Lannon on Saturday evening. The Lannon is such a pretty boat. Kay and Tom with their great crew make you feel so comfortable and welcome. The cruise at 5:30 -8:00 took all the stress away not just one day of stress but a lifetime. Here a couple of pictures of our cruise. When it was time to get off, just wanted to turn around and take another cruise. Thank you Lannon.

Schooner Tyrone took Line Honors and placed first in the Medium-class Schooner category on Sunday in the Mayor’s Race. Today Captain Matthew Sutphin (pictured) with Mate Lisa Goodwin and crew will compete in the Fisherman’s Cup race which starts in Gloucester, with the finish line in Provincetown. She races against Schooner Ardelle among others.
This is the first time Tyrone raced in the Gloucester Schooner Festival thanks to Al Bezanson of Schooner Green Dragon. Tyrone’s home port is Chatham, MA. http://chathamclassicyachtcharters.com/
