Red Baron Lobster Boat Model At GMHC Gift Shop

Here’s another comparison of The Red Baron lobster boat model and Mark Ring’s lobster boat The Stanley Thomas.  Note the same windows in the trunk cabin.  Note the same color scheme.  Note the same hand rails along the roof.  Mark Ring has since taken the windows out of the trunk cabin in The Stanley Thomas (the photo was taken in 2002).

Normally I wouldn’t post a picture of a Lobster Boat Model but in this case, this particular lobster boat model looked almost like an exact replica of the Stanley Thomas, Mark Ring’s Lobster Boat.  They sell these models at The GMHC gift shop.

Here’s The Stanley Thomas

Montgomery’s Boatyard 1975

brotheriichristngWhile Ron Gilson was talking about various boatyards where the Draggers were built, It dawned on me that my father bought an old Jonesport hull at Mongomery’s for $400.00. He built the super-structure on it from plywood. It came out as a pretty nice little lobster boat. I remember we had lots of fun on that old boat. “Haulin the traps”

The Dog and I

Lobstermen are starting to gear up for the coming season.  They go through the rope and take out knots.  They clean and repair the traps.  They paint buoys.   It’s coming.  As the water warms the lobsters will be on the move and our lobstermen will be ready to catch em.

Harbor Goods- Gloucester Life Is Goods Store Jake Lobster Mug

Being the coffee freaks that we are in our house you just knew that Jake Lobster mug was going to be part of our coffee mug collection, didn’t ya?  This happens to be the mug of choice when going to the cabinet(the lobster one)  Problem is we only have one.  I’ll have to swing down and grab another one so the Mrs and I won’t have to fight for it.

These Life is Good coffee mugs have some weight to them and feel good in your hand.   A great gift for the lobsterman or lobster lover in your life.  Look for the Life is Good Video interview with Christopher at 10:00AM

Where Zat, Frank and Paul?

dsc_6693-open-full Joey remembered where   that sign is. If I hadn’t taken the photo yesterday, I wouldn’t have known.  One of those things you just don’t notice. And my son who delivers there everyday for Ocean Crest didn’t recognize it either!

From Sally Goldenbaum

Dear Joe,

I just want to let you know how GMG has become a part of my early morning ritual. I live in Kansas (yes…not too many lobsters and ocean waves around here) but spend a lot of time on Cape Ann because I write a series of mysteries (Death by Cashmere–and the newest book, Patterns in the Sand, which comes out next month) set on Cape Ann. In fact, I think you helped me with some information for Cashmere when I happened in your warehouse one day looking for lobster for dinner. I asked you how many traps Cass, the lobsterwoman in my series, would have to have to earn a living. You asked me what kind of truck she  drove–a beat-up chevy kind of person could get by with 200. And so that is how many Cass has (along with a beat up Chevy), thanks to you. So thank you!

And now you continue to help me by starting my writing day with the flavor of Gloucester, the amazing photos you post, and the fascinating people who add color to your site. It is a wonderful way to dive into the pages of my book.

Thanks, Joe. I appreciate all your help and hope to thank you in person on one of my trips.

Thanks Sally!
One quick question- “Where’s my royalties?”  🙂  LOL

Crab Traps, Naples Florida

They pour cement in the bottom of the crab traps so they will land bottom first once set off the boat.  This way they will fish properly.  Very few lobstermen pour cement in the bottom of lobster traps but I have seen it here and there.  The prefered method of weighting a lobster trap is with bricks.  This is another difference between lobster traps and crab traps.

Blue Lobster

This rare blue lobster was caught by Horace Lindberg Jr. (Dad) aboard the Brother II circa 1970’s. He gave it to the UMass Marine Biology Station in Bay View. They said the chances of “catching” this rare lobster was about 1 in 5 million. He had t-shirts mad up with the boat name and the slogan “one in 5 million”

Around one in two million lobsters is blue. A research study conducted by Professor Ronald Christensen at the University of Connecticutdiscovered that a genetic defect causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein.[4] The protein, and a red carotenoidmolecule known as astaxanthin, combine to form a blue complex known as crustacyanin, giving the lobster its blue color.[5]

Funny, notice the pegs, haven’t seen those in a long time.
