Kristin Rotondo Heading Effort To Raise Money For Bench In Honor Of Mike and Alice Wheeler

Hi,
I loved reading "Where would you want your bench?". I often think about where my bench should be.
I am trying to raise $950 to purchase a bench from the city for Mike and Alice Wheeler to be put in at Cripple Cove park. The Wheeler’s are the unofficial caretakers of the park. They mow, plant & clean the park. They do everything from prune & plant to clean trash, graffiti and poo. If you have spent any extended time there you have met them. They do this because they love the park and the children that play there.
I thought that your readers might be interested in donating or know someone who would be.
You can donate by going here
http://wheelerbench.blogspot.com/
or there is a link on the Cripple Cove Park fan page on facebook.
Thanks so much.

Laurie Lufkin Dinner Service Auction At The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Video

This is a video showing Laurie’s Donation of Dinner Service Being Bid On At The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Auction Last Night

Laurie’s Dinner service actually auctioned off for more than the appraised value.  Check out the clip showing how high the bidding went.

No pressure Laurie but you better deliver now that they bid over the appraised value. 🙂

That Laurie Lufkin brings the big bucks!

Lois Lane Is Home Again

LOIS LANE IS HOME AGAIN

This is the tale of a lost dog, a beautiful Gloucester black lab named Lois Lane. This is a tale of three friendly competitors in the food business who without realizing it, helped reunite Lois with her owners. And this is the story of a teenage boy in Gloucester with a keen eye and a good heart.

Lois Lane and best friend, Clark Kent, both Labrador Retrievers, live in Gloucester with their owners, Matt Beach and John Lamirande, who are two of the owners of Duckworth’s Beach Gourmet on Washington Street. On Sunday afternoon, Lois and Clark were in their back yard when suddenly Lois was gone. Matt scoured the neighborhood with no success. Friends converged to hunt for Lois, but by nightfall she had not returned home.

Monday was a flurry of the usual syllabus of activities for lost dogs: e-mails, Facebook postings, placing a “lost dog” ad in the Gloucester Daily Times, making signs and posters, and calls to Cape Ann Animal Aid, the Police, local veterinarians, and the Animal Control Officer. Around 5 PM friends dispersed around Gloucester to hang posters and search once again for the still missing Lois Lane.  It was just a short time after that their friend Kim Dustin, owner of Kimini Concierge, who also works at Duckworth Beach Gourmet, stopped by several locations on Washington Street, Richdale, Willow Rest, etc. and posted her picture on bulletin boards. Within minutes of the posters being hung, Lenny Leonardo, age 15, saw the poster and phoned his mom to tell her he thinks he found the owner of the missing Lois Lane. Lenny’s parents own Leonardo’s Restaurant on Main Street. Lenny’s mother, Brenda, had shared a story of a black lab who hung out in Lenny’s grandmother’s neighborhood over night. Brenda called Matt, and within ten minutes Matt and John were at the front door where Lois Lane was waiting for them, her body shaking and her tail wagging wildly. It was too soon to tell whether she had been hurt.

Immediately, they called Ray Cahill, owner of Seaport Veterinary Hospital, Lois’s veterinarian, whose office was closed. He was expecting people for dinner, but he said that he’d meet them at his office in 15 minutes to see if Lois had sustained any injuries. The X-rays look good, and while Lois is still tentative, she’s on the mend.

When the excitement of the reunion died down, Matt and John reflected back on the past 40 hours. What a community we live in! With individuals reaching out to help through emails, Facebook posting, phone calls, and businesses partnering together to help local citizens in a time of need.  And then there is Lenny, not you’re typical teenage boy but someone who’s thoughtful enough to care for someone else’s pet. When asked what could be done to thank him for his thoughtfulness and attention, Mrs. Leonardo said nothing, Lenny was so relieved that he was able to help and that was enough for him.

If Lois Lane could talk, we bet she’d be saying, “Was that you, Superman?”

Lois Lane Has Been Found Alive- A Happy Ending To The Missing Black Lab Case

For those of you who were out looking for the missing Black Lab which Alicia posted about yesterday, thank you.  Lois Lane Has Been Found Alive!

Lois Lane Has been Found- Alive

Joey – Lois Lane has been found – it’s a LONG story which we would hope you could help us with recognizing the individuals who helped us find her. If I can, I’ll send you the incredible story of how she was found and the young boy who made it happen. Hopefully include a picture of the two of them once Lois recovers from her injuries.

Video Tonight

I must have a Leaky Roof!!!!

Brenda on her scooter. A LITTLE MORE TO THE LEFT AND YOU WOULD'VE GOT HIM! Next Time.

I came across this Local Shops website by clicking on the owners name in the GMG Comment section. The Shop on Rocky Neck is Called Imagine, The owners name is Brenda Malloy. I’ve walked and drove by this shop many times and never stopped in. I’ve seen Brenda driving a scooter with a colorful tail hanging from her Helmet. I’ve seen the videos Joey has taken for GMG of her coming very close to running him over. I was a little disapointed she did’nt have the heart to do it. NEXT TIME.

Anyways, I read her story of her Travels and how she sponsors Children in Nepal. YOU SHOULD TOO! “Wow, there are really people like that” I thought. After reading that story and thinking about it for awhile, I realized that I must have a Leaky Roof. There were these strange drops of water running down my cheeks. It Had to be a Leaky Roof !

Check out the Story and Brendas website, and Do what you can.

Here’s a little bit of that Story from Brendas website;

I currently sponsor 13 children in Kathmandu, Nepal. March 2000 was my first landing in Nepal, been there 10 times since.   Exerting oneself toward a meaningful life, developing confidence in basic goodness, and expressing it with wisdom and compassion, is the key to happiness.  If you’d like to check out the story, how it came to be, read on….

Last updated11/15/09, much more to come, keep checking!

Timeline

March 2000: 5 weeks trekking in the Himalaya Mountains of Nepal in the Mt. Everest region, solo. Upon returning to Kathmandu, started meeting street children and took a liking to them immediately. Amazing spirit, sense of humor, resilience and love of life.  During this time I met a young boy named Til Bahadur Thapa Magar, who was around 8 years old, working at a coffee shop I used to frequent, sitting around talking with the Tibetan Buddhist Monks about life. Til struck me as an amazing boy, doing his job of serving tea and wiping tables and doing dishes very diligently with a huge smile on his face all the time. He piqued my curiosity, I took a liking to him. I’d visit daily to see him and smile at him and practice my Nepali language lessons with him.

I spent 4 months in Nepal that trip, in between I spent a month in Tibet (thats a whole other story).  I returned to Nepal in October that year, after being in the states for 10 weeks. I found a room in a home in a neighborhood close to where Til worked. I inquired of the owner of the coffee shop, where Til worked and whose family Til lived with,  if I could send Til to school, meaning to pay his tuition, and the man said yes.  Despite the fact that the man would be loosing his laborer for 6 hours a day, he agreed to let Til attend school.  At the time Til was working from 4:30am until 9:30pm, then going home and doing the families dishes and cleaning before he went to bed. Til was from a small village a couple of days from Kathmandu by bus and on foot. His parents sent him to Kathmandu to get an education and to earn his keep. He left home at 7, had never seen a road or a bus or a city before leaving his village for this first time. Anyhow, I enrolled Til in the same school where the shop keepers 3 children went, so that he would feel like less of an outsider and to give him some sense of equal footing.

After 2 months in Nepal, during which time I was teaching english at a high end private school, I was called to go to Thailand to meet the American man who was producing and selling my greeting card line in the states. He wanted me to design paper product in Thialand,  I wasn’t interested.  I was very happy in Nepal, but he asked me to go for just a couple of weeks, so I went. Little did I know that I would end up spending 5 months in Thailand and falling in love with that country as well.  I never did return to my teaching job in Nepal, though when I next spoke with the principal of the school  he told me that the children in my classes were still keeping the daily journals I taught them to do and talking about my time with them.

On my subsequent trips to Nepal I began sponsoring more children and donating to organizations with leftover monies I had. When I enroll a child in school, I make a commitment to myself to educate that child through high school graduation, which is grade 10 in the Nepali system.  The money to fund the children comes from the revenue at my shop, donations from friends, as well as the donation jar from my  ‘have a heart’ program, on the front counter of IMAGINE. ‘Have a heart, make a donation’, the little sign says, and you can take a hand carved heart from Bali or a floating heart candle from Thailand.  Most years I have extra monies, more than I use for that particular school year. Some of the extra money I save for the following year, most of it I will spread among these favorite charities of mine in Kathmandu…Mother Theresa’s old folks home at Pashuputinath, an open air facility with dormitory style set up, all beds facing a common temple area in the center, for sick and debilitated elders with no family to care for them. Maiti Nepal, an organization which rescues Nepali girls and their children/babies from brothels in India that they have been tricked into going to under the pretext of being domestic help. Santhi Leprosy home where they house and treat leprosy patients. Hopeful Home for Orphans where they house and care for over 40 children without families.

There is more to say, I’ll get to it later

Bottom line is that each and every single one of us can make a difference. Nothing feels better than service, serving others in some small way.  I realize that in America I make a very meager living, in fact know few people who make what I do or less. But my trips to Asia make me realize that I am indeed a very wealthy woman. Compared to the families I sponsor, I am rich.  And there is nothing I want for. Nothing I need. And this is one of the things that compels me to help those in need. It takes so little to do so much.

If you are interested in donating, please email me.  All donations are greatly appreciated. I do this on my own, I am not a non profit, I do not have 501(c) 3 non profit tax status, therefore donations are not tax deductable. So if you donate to causes to help your bottom line, I am not the place for you. If you donate from the heart, for your heart, your donation goes 100% to the kids. I pay my airfare and expenses while in Nepal out of my own pocket, none of it comes from donations.

PEACE!

2010 Good Morning Gloucester Horribles Parade Float Thank You and Pics

Sharon Lowe Photo

There were so many great Floats this year.  The disadvantage of walking in the parade is that you don’t get to see the parade, but from the floats that I did see that were around us they all were fantastic with a ton of effort and all deserved trophies of which there were many.  Hopefully I can get a list of the winners emailed by the Horribles Committee so all the others can be recognized on these pages.

The Floats that I got to see because they were around us were the Annisquam kids playing Annie and that was outstanding.  When we pulled back into the parking lot at the end they were still going strong with their singing!  Glazed float was impressive also with the cute outfits and 50’s theme.  I love the bagpipes and they were behind us.  Chills every time I hear them. The Rhumb line always has a strong entry of musicians.  R&K Fuel and the John Deere Tractors was cool and the Steeple one was creative as hell.  I honestly didn’t get to see more than that because we were boxed in by big trucks in the parking lot but there was a lot of creative energy spent by people and I’m sure the committee wishes they could give everyone an award.

Pictures from the 2010 Horribles Parade Good Morning Gloucester Float in which our team won the special Judges Award for Best Non-Category Float.

Our win was a total team effort with a huge part played by designer Felicia Mohan, Lead Construction Jeremy Frost, Construction and Driving By Barry Mohan.  It was helped in huge part by Golden Living Center Brittney Reitano’s contribution.
T-Shirt Printing By Paul Frontiero. Manuel Simoes for sponsoring the T-Shirts.  Catering By Alicia Pensarosa.   Paul Morrison and The Audio Department.  Earl and Arch for the GMG Theme Song Gloucester Til the End.  Frank Ciolino for Car Detailing and GMG Stickers. Joey Ciolino for filling up the poop balloons. Ed Collard for Hot Dog Duty passing out stickers and helping with The Mounting of teh Bird. The Fabulous Lily Lufkin doing a great Job passing out candy and energy.  Laurie for her excellent snacks before the parade.  Beth Swan PR and all the Hand and Candy Passer-Outers. BJ Mohan and the Frost Boys Connor and Kyle for Perfect Poop Control Management Up In The Truck.  MORE POOP! Amandacakes, Danny Powers, Sarah Francis and cousin Alison for rationing out the perfect amount of candy.  The Bean and Snoop Maddie Mad for holding up throughout that long day and WAYYY past their bedtimes.
David Cox, Manny and Sharon on camera duty.  Mike Lindberg on hand for moral support.  all the GMG Fans along the parade route who helped keep the energy high and of course the judges!

The good pics are to come as I was not focused on picture taking. The pics with the whole team are on Manny, Sharon and David’s Cameras. Hopefully we will get to see those this morning!

New Solar Compactor Trash Collectors in Gloucester

Deb Clarke pics and writes-

This is one of the new solar compactor trash collectors the city purchased with a grant. this one is one main street next to the Judith Sargent Murray Hough house stairs.
The city has already seen a reduction in illegal trash dumping in public receptacles, only has to empty these about 2 times a week. there is less trash blowing around main street these days, and fewer opportunistic scavengers!

Waxing For Charity- (But Not The Nuts)

Getting Old Sucks.  There I said it.

Don’t give me the whole age is just a number routine because apparently the hair that grows on my back and out of places I never imagined hair would ever grow out of didn’t get the memo.  I mean how fucking rotten is it that you lose the hair on top of your head only to have it growing out of your ears, nose, back of your arms, small of your back and all these other places that hair simply shouldn’t grow?  I need goddamn hedge clippers to keep this unwanted hair in check.

I’m sick and tired of this whole hair situation and I plan on doing something about it.

Wait- I’ve got it!

“Waxing For Charity”  We could have a live taping for Good Morning Gloucester of me getting waxed and for each rrrrip we could announce someone’s donation to a charity!

I probably ought to do some research first to see how much pain is involved and if someone does all of this in one sitting or if they do it in stages.  Maybe we could do it after hours and have a party and people could witness the pain over a few cocktails.

Oh and the nuts are off limits!!!  No amount of money for any charity would convince me that hot wax poured on my nuts would be a good idea. I’m just saying….

Is this something that you guys think would be interesting for the blog?  I mean it seems like a win all the way around- A win for a charity, a win for the blog and a win for the lucky salon who gets the exposure.

A live broadcast would be hilarious

I guess a poll is in order-
