HUGE SHOUT OUT TO WICKED TUNA’S CAPTAIN DAVE AND NANCY MARCIANO
After yesterday taking a group of 70 veterans and their invited guests on a fishing trip aboard Captain Tom Orrell’s Yankee Freedom, Captain Dave and Nancy went fishing today with a ship full of local fishermen and fans.
No greater fan than Michael, who was waiting far ahead of the scheduled departure for an autograph from Captain Dave. Autograph in hand, just look at that ear to ear grin!

The Greatest Natural Spectacle on Earth was in Rockport Last Night
I’ve lived in Gloucester since the early 1980s (except 1995-1998, when I lived in CA and NYC) and Vickie has lived here since 1998 … and guess what, neither of us had ever been to the Rockport Bonfire? Why? Oh, lots of reasons; but none of them is reasonable — not after what we witnessed last night!
Kevin St. Peter, who chairs the Rockport Firemen’s Association, asked us to be judges in the Rockport Firemen’s Parade and we accepted. Having produced and promoted hundreds of shows & events, Vickie and I keenly appreciate just how much work it takes to pull off an event of this magnitude and, honestly, it was a true pleasure not having to deal with all the details. Kevin did that. And he dealt with all the crazy-last-minute emergencies that always pop during any large-scale event. Plus he took great care to make sure all the judges got where we were supposed to go and knew what they were supposed to do — because we had no idea.
More importantly, we had absolutely no idea what we’ve been missing all these decades. The breathtaking power and splendor of Rockport’s giant bonfire tore its way into our psyches; seized every ounce of our attention. What struck me at first was how hot it was — those of us in front had to move back as the flames engulfed the outhouse atop the mountain of fiery palates. Turning around I noticed the crowd of several thousand people all stood transfixed — and very quiet. So quiet, in fact, that the blaze was the loudest sound you could hear — and it wasn’t nearly as loud as the band at the bandstand had been a few minutes earlier.
Then I realized just how bright it was. That’s when I took the picture, above. Notice how well everyone is lit — and it’s pitch black outside. No streetlights. Just the bonfire. It’s brighter than Times Square. (See Nicole’s awesome photo of the bonfire itself here.)
Fire has a magical power to captivate us in a way nothing else can. I certainly hope this Rockport tradition lives on forever. Thanks to Kevin St. Peter for throwing a giant party for thousands of people featuring one of the greatest natural spectacles our Earth has to offer — and making it feel as though everything is running perfectly smoothly!

If your deck chairs are missing…and you want to see a coyote
We found them at Good Harbor Beach, July 4 2017. The striped cushions are the right color! The pair were upended and cushions scattered along with various party remnants between the pedestrian bridge and the piping plover enclosure. We righted them and set them up for Piper Plover viewing. Some folks vandalized the endangered species signs and littered, and others were picking up trash and repairing. The coyote and birds were on the move.
There was a great crow ruckus in the trees across from Blue Shutters Beachside Inn and out popped the coyote. Hung around the creek and then off down the road past http://www.blueshuttersbeachside.com/

SHOUT OUT TO GLOUCESTER’S FINEST- THANKING OUR FIREMEN, POLICEMEN, AND EMTS
This morning I was rear-ended coming home from filming Plovers. No worries, just a touch of whiplash. I was a little shook up and didn’t ask for the name of fireman, EMT, and policeman who were there within moments of calling, but would very much like to thank them, not only for this morning’s help, but I have been thinking about them all week during Fiesta. They were present at every event throughout this past week’s fabulous fiesta, and I observed them providing assistance in myriad situations. I think we are very blessed in Gloucester to have such a dedicated and compassionate team of policemen, firemen, and emergency medical responders. A most sincere thank you for all that you do each and every day, and for all that you did to make this year’s Saint Peter’s Fiesta the wonderful success that it was.
Don’t they have the greatest badges too 🙂

Dirty Beach gone | Mumbai volunteers remove 11 million pounds of deep trash from 1.5 mile Versova Beach
Rolling up their sleeves 88 weekends in a row. From Clean Up Versova twitter feed @Versovabeach: “Afroz Shah and Versova Resident Volunteers, a citizen led initiative committed to clean up Versova Beach, Mumbai. No political affiliations whatsoever.”
Residents, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers, and BMC heavy duty construction equipment and vehicles carted the trash to landfills (Deonar, Mulund, Kanjurmarg) which are at capacity struggling with waste management. The United Nations deemed it the “world’s largest beach clean-up project”.

“The New England Beach Soccer Cup tournament is not just about crowning a champion, but more importantly giving back to the community.
This year, all of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Fishermen Youth Soccer as well as the Gloucester High School Soccer Boosters.
These two organizations have been instrumental in the development of thousands of young student-athletes and soccer players and have played a vital part in the community for several decades. We’re so happy to be able to give back to these deserving organizations and re-invest in our youth and community!”
We can’t be there because of a Fishermen Youth Soccer game this Saturday–AWAY AWAY as in Haverhill– but we’ll check out that this cool new add-on: LIVE streaming the event!

SnotBot has been invited to the UN General Assembly on Thursday for World Oceans Day in the human form of this guy, where he will be joining Sir Richard Branson, Leonardo DiCaprio, James Cameron, the International Space Station, and he’ll be introduced by Sylvia Earle. Amy Kerr and daughter Dylan will be there to see it happen!!! You can check the UN website for a live feed, he’ll be on around 11 am.

Since graduating from Mass. College of Art in 1970, Liz Fletcher has worked in clay as a sculptor, potter, and teacher. She is an exhibiting member of the NH Art Association and the League of NH Craftsmen, showing her work around New England and as far as Georgia, Texas, and the state of Washington. Living in the woods, Fletcher became concerned about human impacts on the land. After getting a Masters degree in Resource Management at Antioch New England, she assisted the Nashua River Watershed Association with open space planning, coordinating their Greenway program to protect the rivers of the region. “The wonders of the natural world inspire me, as do the absurdities of the human condition, which is often not beautiful but sometimes humorous! People often sense a narrative quality in my work — the images speak, telling stories. Life forms fascinate me. I love to shape clay into creatures and strange beings whose combinations of human, beast, and bone embody the interpenetration of the natural and human worlds, of geologic time and daily life. We’re all in it together — voyaging in this great mysterious universe.”

If you see these two at Good Harbor Beach, tell them thanks for the terrific job they did on the new handicap accessible boardwalk. Additionally, this morning, they were making needed repairs to the footbridge. Thanks so much to Phil and Mike and all of Gloucester’s DPW for getting Gloucester beaches ready and in tip-top shape for the coming Memorial Day weekend.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TO BAN SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAGS AND POLYSTYRENE
Please join the Gloucester Clean City Commission, Councilors Melissa Cox and Sean Nolan, and Seaside Sustainability, Inc. in supporting a ban in Gloucester on all single use plastic bags and polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers like coffee cups and takeout food containers.
PLEASE SIGN HERE
We believe this initiative is important in maintaining the beauty of our city and the health of our ocean and land. Given the availability of biodegradable and reusable alternatives and the economic benefits of the proposed ban, we anticipate support from Gloucester’s residents and businesses.
This proposed ban is similar to those already passed in dozens of cities and towns in Massachusetts (and counting) including our neighbors Ipswich, Manchester, Marblehead, and Newburyport. Cities and towns (and entire states – Hawaii) along the coast line of our country have been particularly vigilant in creating this ban. Just between 2015 and 2016, bills similar to ours were proposed in 23 states regarding the regulation of single use plastic bags and/or polystyrene. In a recent investigation of Gloucester Harbor using an ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle), observers reported an abundant amount of plastic bags and Styrofoam cups on the ocean floor.
There are economic and feasible alternatives to these products that all businesses, large and small can stand behind and support!
