Katrina’s Bar & Grille presents their second $1,000 Singer-Songwriter Challenge: an 8-week, performance event open to all musicians. Starting on Tuesday, May 2nd, this weekly event will select a finalist at the end of each night for 7 weeks. On the 8th week, all of the weekly finalists come together and perform for a piece of the $1,000 cash prize.

How it works:
This weekly event, hosted by Chris Langathianos, will showcase musicians – solo performers, duos, trios & bands (no drums as setups must take less than 5 minutes) – allowing them to perform up to 3 songs. Performers will play before a panel of judges. The judges panels will change from week to week and will be made up of local musicians, business owners, etc. After each performance, judges will provide their live feedback to the performer and audience. A confidential score card will be kept, and a weekly winner will be announced at the end of the evening.
After the 7 weeks of preliminaries, all 7 finalists and 1 wild card will return for week 8 to perform 3 songs – at least 1 MUST BE AN ORIGINAL – before a panel of celebrity judges. 3 winners will be selected and will go home with a piece of the $1,000 cash prize. 1st place / $700, 2nd / $200, and 3rd / $100.
Other details:
1. Performers may participate on a weekly basis but may only win one week.
2. In the event of high demand for performance spots, the event host reserves the right to move previous performers further down the list.
3. All audio equipment is provided – PA, microphones, stands, and monitors.

I have loved this past month’s atmospheric and textured, misty April weather. Do you recall an April as foggy? I don’t. Whenever out and about and a spare moment was mine, I grabbed my camera and had a go at capturing beautiful fog-shrouded Cape Ann.

Cape Ann Symphony wraps up the orchestra’s 65th Anniversary Concert Season on Saturday, May 20 at 8 pm with a Scandinavian Spectacular featuring stirring music from Scandinavian composers Carl Nielsen, Jean Sibelius and Edvard Greig and the CAS debut ofextraordinary blind pianist Yoo Jin Noh at the CAS performance venue at Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium is handicapped accessible. The Scandinavian Spectacular concert program features Nielsen’s Symphony No. 1;Sibelius’ Finlandia and piano phenom Yoo Jin Noh performingGreig’s gorgeous Piano Concerto. Mike Perrine and his team are on the job, systematically dismantling the collapsed North Atlantic Fish/Channel Fish building. According to Mike, the use of a barge and crane were considered but just the movement alone of the barge would have guaranteed even further damage to the wharf. Considerable expense is saved by manually removing the building. As Mike’s team is pulling the building down, the debris is being loaded onto a trailer on site.
The work area is fenced off and Mike warns that people not try to sneak on site. This is a very dangerous work zone. The dismantling can easily be viewed from I4-C2 and from the Cape Ann Brew Pub.

The two mastiffs are Mike’s and they are named Beauty and Beast 🙂 I didn’t catch ZacK’s dog’s names. Dog friendlies may recognize Mike and ZacK as they generously installed the waterlines for Gloucester’s dog park.

First named Tragabigzanda after a Turkish Princess, Cape Ann was later renamed by King Charles in honor of his mother, Queen Anne. The granite rock formation at the tip of Eastern Point looks to me like the silhouette of a figurehead on a ship’s bow. Historically though, Mother Ann is thought to represent either a reclining Puritan woman or Anne of Denmark, the mother of King Charles.
I have been experimenting with different focal lengths with the new 1.4 teleconverter. The first photo was taken at 400mm with the teleconverter. I am not sure if the fog or the lens is creating the softness but I think it’s going to be lots of fun nonetheless, especially for wildlife.

NORTH ATLANTIC FISH AND CHANNEL WHARF COLLAPSE

The North Atlantic Fish storage building at 88 Commercial St. in Gloucester has collapsed, taking part of the wharf with it.
The property at 88 Commercial St. is home to Neptune Marine, and was formerly known as the FBI Wharf. According to officials at the scene, the storage building was already cordoned off because of its condition.

Cedar Rock Gardens is an 18-acre farm located at 229 Concord Street in West Gloucester. The flower and veggie farm is owned and operated by Tucker Smith and Elise Jillson. Last year was their first in business with hours open to the public and it’s so exciting to see Tucker and Elise developing their growing enterprise. This year they have expanded seedling offerings (see the “read more” at the end of this post for a complete list of plants offered) and have devoted even more fields to pick-your-own flowers .

Congratulations to Deo and Paula Braga, and their son Dominick, for the grand opening of the Braga’s newest venture, the restaurant Italiano. Today’s joyful ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by Mayor Sefatia, Ken and Kerry from the Chamber, family, friends, and Barry Pett, who was representing Senator Bruce Tarr.
