The red-lipped batfish lives around the Galapagos Islands. A poor swimmer, it “walks” on the seafloor using specially-evolved fins!
The calico lobster in our Aquarium is the same species as Gloucester’s other lobsters, but she has a rare color mutation. Black with orange spots, her color is perfect for Halloween!
The devil fish is a giant ray found in the Mediterranean Sea. Named for their hornlike fins, these harmless fish can reach lengths of 17 feet!
Brian Templeton to play the Thursday Night Blues Party with Dave Sag’s ~ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30 ~ Today 10.24.2013
Dave says,
I’m feeling a little woozy tonite. I’ve been having strange dreams about penises and bolt cutters, and I just sneezed and a tiny metal pellet fell out of my nose. There’s some guy and he has big eyes and a pair of Craftsman® pliers squeezing my brain stem. Oh, wait, it’s only Fred!
But seriously, folks, I’m proud to present to you a new face, a new experience, a new surgical procedure in the form of Dr. Brian Templeton. Many cats grabbed and shook my arms and begged me to get this guy to play, and finally, here he is, the font of everlasting blues. Czech out his web site. Don’t ask me what it is, I can’t find it. Just kidding!
Again, I’m as serious as a hangnail, but you gotta see this guy to believe it. Calling in bombing co-ordinates will be Willie A’s master of guitar goulash, Mr. Billy Loosigian, who looks great in a cowboy hat, and knows how to spit between his teeth. Counting time and his blessings will be my favorite Irish Ace of Pace, Mr. Bennie Benson. I’m really excited about this.I hope you agree! I’m bringing’ extra Diaperine®!

And, to put a bug in your ear, Next week is Halloween™ and it falls on a Thursday™. And it’s party time, right!? You’re gonna wear a costume, nez. pa? And who’s better than to put a spell on you but John Keegan®? Well, he’s gonna be my featured specimen with a whole lot of eerie lackawanna, tubes pulsing as we go for the jugular. Make sure you’ve made your peace and assuaged the gods of Erato before dressing in that nearly nude costume. We’ll see you then.
And remember: We’re nothing without You, the viewer. Live mucus is best! Seethe me on Phasebooke:

HOT TIP: RUN, DON’T WALK, TO THE LAST STOP VARIETY!
Sandy, Owner (with husband Gene), and Maker-of-All-Deliciousness at Last Stop
Sandy at Last Stop Variety in East Gloucester is making the most delicious pumpkin spice doughnuts you could ever possibly imagine. They are sweet, tender, and cinnamony spicy–with no skimping on a dusting of powder sugar–and delightfully warm.
The past few mornings, after standing still for hours and shivering in the cold marsh since daybreak, I have been stopping in at the Last Stop and it has been my good fortune to arrive just as Sandy is taking the doughnuts off the griddle. If you like Russell Orchards apple cider doughnuts, which my family adores, these are AT LEAST TEN TIMES BETTER!

Last Stop Variety is located in East Gloucester at 273 East Main Street, just before the right turn to Rocky Neck.

World Series & Rock Music — a “Partnership”
In this day and age when rock stars “partner” with big corporations, you wouldn’t expect MLB to be left out, would you? Of course not. 48 songs from 90s mega-stars Pearl Jam will “soundtrack” (yes they actually use this word as a verb on their website) the 2013 World Series. There was a time when Pearl Jam was one of only a handful of touring artists that could guarantee to sell out an arena. The band is on tour again and it makes me wonder who benefits more from this partnership — MLB or Pearl Jam?
Closer to home, local venues are changing their live music schedules knowing that many — if not most of their customers will want to watch the World Series, which begins tonight. Minglewood Tavern cancelled live music for tonight and tomorrow.
The Rhumb Line moved guest host Allen Estes (filling in for Fly Amero, who’s on tour with Orleans) to 4:30. He and Orville Giddings will get fans revved up for the game, which starts at 7:30.
John Rockwell will be at Alchemy as scheduled for Ladies Night (telling?)
Henry Allen makes his final appearance at Midori tonight during the game — perfect for those of you who hope the Sox win, but don’t really care to watch.
Whether or not you plan to watch the World Series, you can get a complete listing of local live music with up-to-the minute schedule changes here.

Here’s your second chance — don’t blow it
As Fly Amero said (in this post) to all of you who didn’t get tickets to see Allen Estes at the Larcom Theatre on October 5: “too bad for you!”. But wait … now you’ve got a second chance. Allen is playing one of Cape Ann’s best listening venues, The Old Sloop Coffeehouse on Saturday, November 2 — and he’s sharing the stage with award-winning singer/songwriter Claudia Nygaard. So don’t screw this up. Get tickets now.

Listen to the first release from the upcoming KBMG EP that should be arriving on CD today.
While mixing I always take long rides around Cape Ann to check out the sound in the Van. I also think about lyrics and themes while walking through Ravenswood or stopping at my favorite spots including Little River and Stubby Knowles Landing. This particular track seemed to fit perfectly with the Foliage around the West side of Gloucester as I shot the Album Cover over there a couple weeks ago and then last week decided that area would make for a great simple video shoot for a Blue Sky Sundown. Hope you enjoy this fun autumn cruise around Cape Ann.

Cape Ann Seagulls
Although ubiquitous where ever we turn, I was curious about the several different species that are often observed fishing and feeding together at dawn. The flocks of seagulls that we see on Cape Ann at this time of year are typically comprised of two species and they are the Great Black-backed Gull and the Herring Gull. In the above photo taken at daybreak (click to view larger), you can see both species; the gulls with speckled feather patterns are first year fledglings of both the Great Black-backed and Herring Gulls.
Interestingly, early in the twentieth century, both species of gulls were mostly winter visitors, neither staying to breed when the weather warmed. The first pair of breeding Herring Gulls was discovered on Martha’s Vineyard in 1912. The first pair of breeding Great Black-backed Gulls was found in Salem in 1932.
The Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) is the larger of the two, up to 30,” with a black back and wings, yellow bill distinguished by a red dot on the bottom near the tip, and pinkish legs.
The Herring Gull (Larus argentus), at 25 inches, has gray wings tipped with black, gray back, white head, pinkish legs, and yellow bill also with a red dot on the bottom near the tip.
The Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) is also a regular visitor but according to Mass Audubon, it has never successfully bred in Massachusetts. The Ring-billed at first glance looks similar to the Herring Gull but is the smallest of the three at 17″ and is also easy to distinguish as it has yellow legs and a dark gray band near the tip of its bill.
OK, you can exhale now — take a breather from baseball and go hear some good music
No explanation needed for this headline — unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks.
Lots going on tonight — if you hurry down to Mile Marker One you can catch Dan King’s last set. See today’s full schedule, below. Great music all week long — see here.

Photos from Committee for the Arts Trails and Sails and Block Party
Hi Joey,
During two Trails and Sails weekends and the last Block Party, the Committee for the Arts (CFTA ) was pleased to participate and spread awareness about municipal art. One event: during the block party we were at Main and Parsons, near a very busy Markouk booth (always busy at Cape Ann Farmers Market, too), fried dough and candy truck (not just kids buying!), Dress Code’s charmingly illuminated booth, and Joe Ciolino’s. What a gorgeous night! We spoke with dozens of folks including the group of twenty youth from Ocean Classroom en route from Maine to Puerto Rico with a stop in Gloucester and a night out downtown.
