Yesterday the Gloucester High School Film Club uploaded a short video documenting the demolition of Newell Stadium from the fall of 2012. It really is worth taking 4 minutes to watch. Check it out here:

Editor’s Note From Joey:
You know I scheduled this post before watching the video and then went back and viewed it. I didn’t think about it til the scenes were unfolding but what history those stands held. As a player or as a spectator. All those beams and seats supporting the crowds throughout the years being dismantled. I’m sure it held a ton of great memories for people. Thanks to the GHS Film club for documenting the demolition.

Let’s welcome back the Ipswich Twins! That’s Mr. Orville Giddings and his neighbor and lawn-mowing customer, Mr. Marque Earley. Mr. G. ,superior gootarist and Pepsodent® spokesperson, is ready to charm you with his raucous blues and plaintive self-inflicted toons. A great songwriter! And Marque, of course, is the finest living local saxophonist who ever lived, locally. Whooping it up on drums will be out favorite kooky cackler, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. I’ll be on base, once again. Spring has sprung, so get out there and do the do!
AND REMEMBER THIS: OUR HOURS HAVE CHANGED AGAIN TO 8:30 to 11:30.
It’s summer!! This is a recording. Please leave a message after the beep. Tell your friends and enemies….. Don’t forget to dislike or dismember me on My Spfacebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Davesags-blues-party/1413082458915228. I dunno, this self-loving thing has got to stop. What an incredible waste of time!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you already know that 2014 is the 5oth anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan. I begged my parents to let me stay up and watch the show — and they agreed. (Kids went to bed earlier in those days.)
It was a thrill! Most everybody on my block was already a Beatles fan and the next day, we were utterly devoted. We all started saving up for the next record. Being the 5oth anniversary of what CBS billed as “The Night That Changed America”, you’ve also probably seen lots of Beatles tribute bands playing around. Next Friday (April 25), Top area musicians come together (yes, pun intended) to help raise money for Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse as The Number Nines — but this is no tribute band. Rather, it’s three top Gloucester singer/songwriters: 3rian King, Chelsea Berry and Renée Dupuis, joined by Boston‐based multi‐instrumentalist Meff and guitarist Brendan Burns with Gloucester’s favorite rhythm section: Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza. They’ll perform their own originals plus fresh takes on The Beatles, like this soulful interpretation of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” featuring Chelsea Berry on vocals:
So, we can all agree that The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever, right? “Not so fast,” quips Vickie. “What about Jimi Hendrix?”
“What about him?” I reply.
“You’re always saying he’s the greatest rock guitar player, who ever lived.”
“Well, of course he is.” [Here’s one of my Hendrix favorites]
“So how can The Beatles be the best rock band ever?”
“Oh come on. I can’t choose between The Beatles and Hendrix!”
7 days of filming, 2 days for still photography, 9 locations, 6 camera units, 7 captains, 5 production support boats, 45 crew members…shooting with Arri Alexa, Red Epic, Phantom Flex, Phantom Miro, Sony F3…Techno Dolly, Cineflex (boat and helicopter), Underwater Phantom, 360 degree dolly track setup…all in all, one of the most involved, most complex and most fun shoots I’ve been lucky to be a part of. Thank you to the team at Evolve IMG, and the NGC Creative Team for one incredible production!

As GMG Weather man Peter Lovasco points out in his very informative post (with great pix) there’s a Blood Moon tonight. This just in from Lisa Smith about how Cape Ann TV plans to celebrate:
Blood Moon/Lunar Eclipse tonight! Is it a prophecy of doom? or a rare celestial event? We here at Cape Ann TV are not sure of what to make of this heavenly sideshow. But to celebrate this rare phenomenon, we will be airing Gordon Bairds’ “Crazy Moon” a musical odyssey.
“Crazy Moon” airs tonight on Channel 8:30 p.m., with repeats at the wee hours of Tuesday morning at: 12:00 am, 1:30 am, 3:00 am and 4:30 am.
The Blood Moon goes live in the night sky at 12:53 a.m. through 6:37 a.m., and peaks between 3:07 a.m. and 4:25 a.m. on the East Coast, according to NASA.
Pictured is a NASA photo of a Blood Moon and a Gloucester Daily Times photo of Gordon Baird, note the red aura emanating from both orbs.

The former lead singer and creative force behind the group YES, Jon Anderson stands as one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock. His distinctive high tenor remained a fixture on mainstream rock radio for decades, fronting the band’s biggest hits throughout the 70’s and 80’s including “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Roundabout,” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart.” He was also primarily responsible for many of the band’s epic pieces like “Close to the Edge,” “Awaken” and “The Gates of Delirium.” Since parting ways with YES, Anderson has continued his idiosyncratic musical path, touring and releasing solo records while delving into folk and world music. The Body on the Rocks is a page-turning collection of superbly written classic detective stories, set in Gloucester. Very, very proud of my husband!!! One of my favorite passages, found on page 227:
“There are many different ways human being scream.
At the amusement park you hear the shrill cries of rollercoaster riders who, with arms held high not in surrender to the enemy but as expressions of death-defying hubris, giddily anticipate the breakneck plunge down the first big hill. In movie theaters you hear the excited shrieks of patrons who have paid to be scared half to death by the maniac on the screen. There are the squeals of delight from children who tear open Christmas presents to find that Santa has brought that coveted toy. And there are angry howls of sports fans who somehow expect that the nearsighted referee who is far out in the middle of the playing field, surrounded by thousands of the screamers’ fellows, will somehow hear and be affected by each one’s individual complaint.
Of the many varieties of excited utterances made by people, the scream of genuine terror is singular and unmistakable. It penetrates to the core and demands a response.”
The Body on the Rocks is available at The Bookstore of Gloucester and The Book Shop of Beverly Farms, as well as Amazon.com (paperback and Kindle).

Tom also did the painting for the cover, painted at the rocks at Brace Cove in 2005.
From the press release ~ The Body on the Rocks presents twelve thrilling stories featuring detective Chris Mark. Set in the rugged port city of Gloucester, Massachusetts, each story offers human drama, passion, intrigue, and a glimpse into the complicated life of an Iraq War vet who only wants to help people solve their toughest problems. This fast-paced collection is perfect for a day at the beach or an evening by the fireplace, and will keep you turning the pages long past your bedtime.
Tom is a freelance ghostwriter and editor, and the editor of Renaissance Magazine, America’s leading national magazine devoted to contemporary renaissance faires and culture. Visit his website here.
Tom Hauck is a writer living in Gloucester, Massachusetts. His first novel, Pistonhead, tells the gritty story of a guitar player in a rock band who faces a life crisis. Lucas Manson, his second novel, is a literary horror thriller that pits agent Mark Dylan against a charismatic evangelist who is the leader of a bloodthirsty hominid species.
Perhaps you saw him at the UU Meetinghouse Solstice concert in December. If you did, you already know he’s one of Gloucester’s finest musicians. If you’ve never seen Ken Bonfield, this is the weekend to do so. And the Rocky Neck Cultural Center is a perfect venue for his Artistry of the Guitar.
