LADIES NIGHT IS TONIGHT!!! THURSDAY DECEMBER 4TH, 2014

LADIES NIGHT IS TONIGHT!!!

 THURSDAY DECEMBER 4TH, 2014

First and only thing I’ve heard about it was the lone promo I got from Pop Gallery.

Chop Chop!  Send in your ladies night promo here- goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com

Edit:  Who is in charge of Downtown any more?  The Chamber?  The Downtown Merchant Group?  Is it every man for themselves down there?  Nothing in Todays Times, nothing from anyone except Pop Gallery seems strange.

Eastern Point Lit House:

We’re having Eastern Point Lit House’s Author Night that Kim posted two days ago in conjunction with Ladies Night. We didn’t really include the words Ladies Night in our promos because we thought there would be more noise about it and everyone would assume. I’m surprised too that there wasn’t more promo for this. Anyway, we’re having a raffle for cool gifts, etc. Nine authors, one night. Signed books for all ages and interests make great gifts!

Update: According to Mary Kay At @MaritimeGlou we’ve Got Ourselves a Vagina

Mary Kay from Maritime Gloucester writes in-

I’m going to go with Thetys vagina. That is the actual scientific name for the organism, not a joke. For more info see http://eol.org/pages/510608/overview.

Landed this morning at Captain Joe and Sons-

From eol.org-

Image of Thetys vagina

I put out the challenge to see who could identify it first and Mary Kay from Mariotime Gloucester as usual kicked the New England Aquariums butt all over the place.

That’s Allota Fagina if I do say so myself.

Lights of Love at Addison Gilbert Dec. 3rd

KnowlesPainting Addison Gilbert Hospital’s Seventh annual celebration of life and hope – Lights of Love – will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the hospital. Lights of Love was co-founded by Sue Kyle, who fought a courageous five-year battle with colon cancer. Together, Sue and her partner Shawn Wilson founded Lights of Love to ensure that Cape Ann residents could benefit from the comprehensive care provided by the cancer care team at AGH. Since 2008, Lights of Love has raised more than $116,000 to ensure access to high-quality cancer care for Cape Ann families and the 2,000 patients served each year at the Gorton’s Specialty and Cancer Care Center. This year’s goal is to raise $25,000 for cancer services, with proceeds supporting Addison Gilbert Hospital’s cancer program, including the provision of special care packages to new cancer patients. This year’s event will be presented in honor of Tina Ketchopulos.

For a chance to win an original 20×24 framed oil painting, “Schooner Races in Gloucester,” by renowned Cape Ann artist Ken Knowles, visit the web site listed below. All event proceeds support cancer care at Addison Gilbert Hospital, including special care packages to patients.

For more information or to make a donation, please visit addisongilbert.org/lightsoflove.

Writer’s Note: This is my special place is for cancer care, which I’ve written about extensively here and for my Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/BodinHistoricPhoto?sk=wall. I look forward to attending and also donating.

Brace, Brace’s, Brase’s, Bracy’s ~ How Do You Refer to Brace Cove and Brace Rock?

Brace Cove Panorama ©Kim Smith 2014Click to View Full Size

Reader Cynthia Hill wrote the following in response to a recent GMG post, Thanksgiving Day Brace Cove Gloucester:

Hi Kim,
Can someone prove to me that this is Brace Cove, when for 65 years it’s been Brace’s Cove?
Old maps show it both ways, but I spent a third of my life there ~ always at Brace’s Cove.

When I was small, all our parents “managed Brace’s”, kept it clean and raked, had many a great
clam bakes in front of the Kaknes’ house, all to keep us kids safe during the polio scare.

Every time I see your beautiful photos, I think Brace’s Cove….I’ve explored maps at Fred’s.

Would love it if an “old timer” such as myself, could help sort this out.

Happy Holidays,
Cynthia

Hi Cynthia, Here’s what I found in Joe Garland’s book Eastern Point, page 11, 2nd paragraph:

“Incidentally, this is one of the earliest references to what should properly be called Brace Cove, variously identified as Bracy’s and Brase’s in contemporary documents.  Viewed as a proper name, the etymology leads to a dead end; but rid yourself of that mental set, and the derivation is surpassingly direct: a brace, from the Middle English and Old French, was an arm. Brace is an obsolete word for an arm of the sea, an inlet–a perfect figure of speech in the case of the stunning cove whose waters are so nearly embraced by the lethal, pincer-like arms of Brace Rock and Bemo Ledge.”

Cynthia, I too have seen it spelled several different ways on antique and newer maps. Perhaps if they have a spare moment, some of our “old timer” readers will weigh in–it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

The Original Schooner Columbia Was Built At Story Shipyard In Essex Ma- Now Recreated In Steel

The Schooner Colombia was built in 1923 and sank in 1927.  It was built as a racer but has a storied history in it’s short 4 year life.  When it sank it lost all hands and those names are on the Cenotaph on the plaque representing 1927.

Watch the video and see the construction in which no expense was spared.  What a thing of beauty.
