Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party starts 9pm @ The Rhumb Line 11.26.2014

Mr. Orville Giddings Mr. Amadee Castenell Mr. Dave Sag

We’re dive-bombing the good old Rhumb Line this WEDNESDAY! In all due respect to Turkey Day, The bar is closed on Thursday.
So, I’ve assembled an all-star cast featuring Mr. Orville Giddings. He of the 1000 watt smile and jewel-encrusted uvula will de driving in from Ipswich with a banjo on his knee.  Not only that, but I’ve snagged Mr. Amadee Castenell, fabulously diverse tenor man and mainstay in Henri Smith’s band to put the fear of God in you. This is his first time with us. Make it count!
Throw in Mr. John Cameron, on keys and Mr. John Loud, on eggbeaters, and you have  the beginnings of a wonderful night of music.Be the first on your block to carry your brainstem home in a box!

Today, late day, as happens so many afternoons, I looked up from my work and saw the sky beginning to catch fire–an irresistible reason to take a break and run down to the bottom of our hill to take a few snapshots. I am thankful!

Framing up Again

Along with my recovery comes more energy, and I’m able to frame more photos at the gallery. On Saturday, I framed “Brace Cove, Eastern Point” and the map “Pigeon Cove, 1884.” I think we’ll be in pretty good shape for the holiday season, as I continue to deck the walls.

Niles Beach Sunset with the iPhone 6 Plus Camera

IMG_0934Pretty sky tonight however, the camera in the new 6 plus didn’t capture the striations in the setting sun. I’ll spend some time tomorrow getting to know the camera and am looking forward to trying out video, but at first glance, I am not that impressed with its loss of detail and graininess in low light conditions. I won’t be leaving home again anytime soon without my Fuji X-E1!IMG_0959

The Earliest Sunsets Are Not the Winter Solstice!

Late afternoon light through the trees Gloucester ©Kim Smith 2014Late October Eastern Point, Gloucester

The weatherman caught my attention this morning when he mentioned that in our region the earliest sunsets do not take place on the winter solstice (December 21st).

Take heart fellow-lovers-of-sunlight, Gloucester’s earliest sunset of the year will be on December 14th, at 4:09 pm. We’re on the side of gaining late day light everyday thereafter!

Ted Talks: Nancy Frates: Why my family started the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The rest is history

image

From TED TALKS:

When 27-year-old Pete Frates injured his wrist in a baseball game, he got an unexpected diagnosis: it wasn’t a broken bone, it was ALS. Better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS causes paralysis and death—there is no cure. And still, Pete saw an opportunity to drive awareness about the disease. In a brave talk, his mom Nancy Frates tells the story of how the family developed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and took great pleasure in seeing everyone from Justin Timberlake to Bill Gates take part. If you accepted the challenge, please take the next step: share this talk as you did your challenge video.

Dave says,

Tighten up your asteroid belt this Thursday as we blast off with the espied piper on the tenor sax: Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle. Everybody’s favorite! Just released from MGH where frantic doctors worked slavishly to relieve his screech defect , Big G. is being served piping hot for your musical edification. Not only that, but “Mr.” Edd “Duato” Scheer, on drums, will be joining us, too. What a night! We’re also dragging in Mr. Mike DiBari, kicking and screaming, on gootar, for that new car smell. We all sing, dance and play and will be cracking up all night long. You won’t get a chance to see anything like it again for many months!

We have a bit of rock/pop culture history with us this week
at the Rhumb Line.  After a 4-year absence, Andy Pratt finally
returns as musical guest.  A very special night.  I sincerely
hope no one misses it! ~ Fly

Wikipedia: Andy Pratt (born January 25, 1947) is an American
rock music singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. In the
1970s, he made a number of experimental records and scored a
commercial hit with “Avenging Annie”.  After words of praise
from Rolling Stone magazine (“By reviving the dream of rock
as an art and then re-inventing it, Pratt has forever changed the
face of rock”), he tried a more commercial approach.  Pratt
converted to Christianity in the late 1970s and continued to
make records and perform at big Christian pop music festivals.
Pratt has released over twenty studio albums as of April 2012.

Linda rae has another outstanding trip in Gloucester

Pick what you find interesting, you have such great photographers around.  We have gathered these memories to last for the long months ahead before we can visit in the Spring.  We were amazed at the Gloucester Museum, especially the hall of fishermen families.  What a great idea.  Could have spent hours there.  We always visit the railway marina to see the latest work going on.  And then there was the day last winter in a Pennsylvania grocery  store when Rob discovered this famous fellow and dragged him from aisle to aisle just to catch a big smile on my face.  Needless to say, he was in the way of countless shoppers who weren’t as friendly as Gloucester people.  And I was ready to pack our bags and head six hours to Gloucester.  Congratulations on the excellent restoration of City Hall.  Magnificent!
Just to reiterate something I posted before.  Your Radio Shack is exceptional.  Once again I called ahead to have Travis help me with my iPhone. Their staff and his technical expertise surpass even the Apple Store.  And all with a smile.  You are fortunate… Don’t lose it!
Have a gentle winter, we hope to visit four or five times again next year.  Thank you for Good Morning Gloucester!!
The bridge is of our little town of Milford right across from Pennsylvania situated in the beautiful Delaware River Valley .
Blessings, Linda rae and Rob
